Most common stains can be removed by scrubbing with a stiff brush and an industrial strength detergent. High pressure water cleaning can be used, but there is the risk that you will remove the mortar or damage the surface of the bricks, especially with new masonry. If the stains persist there are a number of chemicals that can be used to treat and remove the stains. Some of the simpler, more effective chemical treatments are described below.

The CBPI Cleaning Clay Masonry Code of Practice provides detailed descriptions of the cleaning techniques used for common stains. If staining persists after applying these chemicals, further options may be available by consulting an Austral Bricks Sales Representative.

Vanadium Do not be alarmed by yellow/green (vanadium) staining that can appear on cream clay pavers or face brickwork. Vanadium stains are not harmful and are part of the natural by-product of some bricks. This staining can be caused by the use of too much acid in the original cleaning process.

Staining will gradually dissipate on external surfaces subjected to weathering. However, a method to hasten removal is the use of 500g of caustic soda diluted into five litres of water.

Bleach or swimming pool chlorine diluted with three parts water can also be used. Wash down with a minimum of water. For more Vanadium cleaning information, please refer to Austral Bricks website.

Efflorescence Efflorescence is a powdery deposit of salts which forms on the surface of bricks and mortar. It is usually white but efflorescence can be yellow, green or brown. A temporary efflorescence is particularly common on new brickwork as soluble salts are transported to the surface of the brickwork by water. Efflorescence can occur from a variety of sources. New bricks contain minimal, if any, soluble salts, but mortar and concrete have relatively high soluble salt contents.

Ground waters that are naturally salt-bearing can be drawn into base brickwork. Efflorescence on new brickwork may be unsightly, but it will not cause damage unless it persists for a long time. The best removal method is simply to brush off the deposit with a stiff dry bristle brush after the wall has dried out.

Collect the removed salts with a dust pan or a vacuum cleaner to prevent the salts re-entering the brickwork. Alternatively, an absorbent cloth could be used to sponge down the surface. Use only a small amount of water and rinse the cloth in clean water regularly to remove the salts.

Calcium (Insoluble White Deposits) Insoluble white deposits appear almost as a milky film on the brickwork. The hard white deposits are insoluble in water and are invisible when wet. Do not confuse these deposits with efflorescence, which is soluble in water.

Maintenance An easy guide on how to keep your brickwork always looking great

Most commonly this staining can arise from the products of the setting reaction of Portland cement, which are leached out of concrete elements such as sills, lintels, copings, cement render or from insufficiently-dense mortar. The combination of clay from the mortar with calcium and silica residues from the cement forms calcium silicate, which could also produce the insoluble white scum.

Apply full strength Noskum to stained bricks and allow the solution to stand for four to six minutes if the reaction is not immediate. Scrub vigorously and wash off with plenty of water whilst still scrubbing. There is no guarantee that this will resolve the problem in severe cases, as scum is extremely hard to remove.

Removing wax crayonIf the kids get a little artistic on the walls, wax crayon can be removed with nail polish remover (acetone). Some clothes washing detergents will also remove light wax crayon stains.

Moss and mould on walls and paving Remove excess deposits and treat the affected area with bleach or swimming pool chlorine diluted two to three parts with water. Use a stiff nylon brush to assist the process. Following this treatment, wash the area down with water. Apply a 1% solution of copper sulphate as a flooding treatment.

Safety firstBefore we go into the details of brick cleaning, here are a few tips on safety. You will be dealing with acids and other chemicals, so ensure that you adequately protect your eyes, skin and lungs from fumes. Safety glasses, respiratory masks and gloves can be purchased from a hardware store.

Obviously, you should avoid contact with these hazardous substances. Children should be kept well out of the way and plenty of clean water should be on hand.

Delivering your bricks, blocks and pavers is the exciting first step in the construction process.

We take pride in efficient and effective delivery as well as working with your builder. Here are a few simple guidelines to help us place your product where you want it, when you want it!

1/ Estimate accurately. We will help estimate your requirements to the next 1/4 pack to avoid under-ordering.

2/ Not so fast! Have your product delivered to site at least one working day before work starts. Starting work on the delivery day may lead to lost time due to waiting.

3/ Take as many bricks as you can with each delivery. Ordering a full load ensures priority, express delivery and allows bricklayers and paver layers to blend from multiple open packs.

4/ Our trucks are big! We need to know if there are any obstacles such as a dead-end or one-way streets, height restrictions, weight restrictions, clearways, main roads, proximity to schools or hospitals, etc.

5/ Is the house or lot number prominent? Place a ‘job sign’ on your front terrace or boundary to eliminate any confusion.

6/ Site access. If the site is locked, tell us the access times. If you require us to enter through neighbouring land, it is your responsibility to get prior written permission. Provide contact number of someone on-site.

7/ Where do you want them? Tell our sales staff where your delivery is to be placed. We need to know before delivery if packs are to be placed around the site please place signs to indicate your requirements. Our tractors need at least 2.5 metres clear width and 2.6 metres height clearance. Less than 8 packs will be delivered by crane placing on verge.

8/ Bricks are heavy! A tractor with a brick pack weighs about five tonnes. It’s your responsibility to ensure the ground and any path or driveway traversed or crossed can sustain this weight. Stormwater pipes are particularly vulnerable to damage.

9/ Safety first... and last. Ensure children are well out of the way and restrain your dog during delivery. We will do our best to place packs to your requirements but the driver has the final say when it comes to safety and possible site damage.

Verticore, used in two-storey dwellings (subject to your engineer’s or builder’s specification), is vertically cored for extra strength, and being larger-sized units, they’re easier to lay.
