The Celebrate West St Paul Royal Ambas-sadors are chosen after a month-long candi-dacy of interviews, community service, and participation in Celebrate West St Paul May events. They are selected based on commu-nication skills, volunteering, service efforts, desire to further their education, and lead-ership abilities. The goal of the program is to engage young women in the community, encourage the development and education of the next generation, and create relation-ships across all ages.

Celebrate West St. Paul Days is a private organization unaffiliated with the city of West St. Paul, and the planning is done by the event’s committee. However, the City supports the event and everyone is welcome to participate.

The West St. Paul Kiwanis club is hosting its annual pancake breakfast and silent auc-tion 7 a.m.-1 p.m., Sunday, May 19 at the West St. Paul YMCA, 150 E. Thompson Ave. The auction will include autographed sports memorabilia from the Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves and North Stars, de-signer baskets created by Jean Helfman for scrapbooking enthusiasts, gardeners, picnic lovers, Willy Wonka candy lovers and those who love to wash their cars, and gift cer-tificates for services, memberships, fashion items, knick-knacks, and food. The break-fast includes pancakes, sausage, coffee, milk and juice. Proceeds are given to local high

schools for scholarships, community youth projects and clubs.

Grand Marshal and Celebrity Grand MarshalThis year’s parade Grand Marshal is Lynn Mortensen, newly retired but long-

time West St. Paul owner of Southview Garden Center. The Mortensen family is celebrating 50 years of business in West St. Paul. Mortensen and his father, Warren, opened the business in 1963 – coincidentally at 1963 S. Robert St., the current site of Southview Liquor. The landscape at the time featured fields and farmlands. The current structure was built five years later. Lynn’s son, Dan, and daughter-in-law, Noelle, have become third-generation owners. With the enthu-siasm shown by the grandkids, Lynn said he wouldn’t be surprised if the fourth generation takes over one day.

Nancee Parkinson is the Celebrity Grand Marshal. The 1961 Miss West St. Paul was crowned Miss Minnesota that same year and placed fourth in the Miss America pageant in 1962. She recently moved back to West St. Paul and credits the royalty program for helping launch her career in television and movies.

Royalty appearancesThe current West St. Paul royalty will take part in events

throughout the festival. Watch for Miss West St. Paul Kerri Moran, West St. Paul Princesses Mina Hunter-Baltes and Kelsi Roe Ternes, West St. Paul Junior Miss Julie Dupont and West St. Paul Little Miss Mikaela Dickey.

During their year-long reign, the royal ambassadors rep-resent the City at nearly 50 events across the state. They also volunteer throughout the community.

The Celebrate West St Paul Royal Ambassadors Family has been in existence for over a decade. The Ambassadors are chosen following a month long candidacy of interviews, community service events  and participation at the Cele-brate West St. Paul Days events. Candidates are selected as members of the Royal Family based  on communica-tion skills, volunteering and service efforts, desire to fur-ther their education, and leadership qualities.

A farewell from Miss West St. PaulThis year, being Miss West St. Paul 2012 has been one of

the most amazing years of my life. I have had the honor of spending my year with four other amazing girls, Princesses Kelsi Rose Ternes and Mina Hunter-Baltes, Junior Miss Ju-liet Dupont, and Little Miss Mikaela Dickey. On behalf of the 2012 West St. Paul Royalty, thank you to Celebrate West St. Paul Days and the West St. Paul Royalty for letting us represent you during the past year. Thank you to each of our sponsors and to all who sponsor and donate to the Cel-ebrate West St. Paul Days and Royalty programs. Without your support, this program would not be possible. Thank you, Terri Wenda and Kathy Maher, for coordinating our events and activities. Thank you royalty parents for every-thing you have done this year, including pulling and setting up the float, decorating, getting us to where we needed to be, taking tons of pictures and so much more. While our year is coming to an end, each of us has many amazing memories from this year that we will never forget. It has been an honor being the 2012 West St. Paul Royalty and representing such a great city and people.

Sincerely, Kerri Moran
