From the Chairman
On behalf of the entire Jackson County Democratic Committee, welcome to our annual
Truman Days celebration in recognition of President Harry Truman. This is one of the largest
gatherings of Democrats in our great state of Missouri and this is truly a jubilant year with sev-
eral offices held by our fellow Democrats.
As you can see this evening that many tables are filled with
our loyal friends in labor and we look forward to continuing those
great friendships. I would like to extend a special honor to our pre-
senting sponsor for these evenings events; the International Broth-
erhood of Electrical Workers Unions. Working people through the
leadership of organized labor have remained the backbone of the
Democratic Party.
Our Truman Days events are representative of the efforts of
many committee people; I hope you will join me in thanking our
co-chairs: Susan Dougherty (breakfast), Sandy Querry (banquet),
Cathy Spainhower (registration) and Vicki Tarpley (event booklet).
Including several that made up the Truman Days Event committee: Executive Director, Jessica
Podhola, Bonnaye Mims, Dutch Newman, Sandy Hartwell, Alfred Jordan, DeAun Young, Judy
Briggs, Alta Stephens, Judy Morgan, Chere Chaney, Elmer Taylor, Roosevelt Sculark and Tom
Wyrsch.
Finally, we would like a special thank you to go to Congressman Emanuel Cleaver and
DNC Member Sandy Querry for assisting the committee in getting such a terrific keynote
speaker for tonight, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, 20th
District of Florida.Thank you for sharing your evening with us and for your support of our Jackson County De-
mocratic Committee.

Gala SpeakerFor more than seventeen years,
Debbie Wasserman Schultz hasdedicated her public life to workingon behalf of the people of South
Florida. On January 4, 2005, she
was sworn in as a member of the
United States House of Representa-tives.
Rep. Wasserman Schultz representsFlorida's 20th Congressional dis-
trict, which encompasses parts of
Florida as far north as Fort Lauder-dale, and as far south as Miami
Beach. Before joining the U.S.
Congress, she was first a Represen-tative and later a Senator in the
Florida State legislature.
Rep. Wasserman Schultz serves onthe House Committee on Appro-
priations. She serves as a
Cardinal, chairing the Legislative
Branch subcommittee. She also
serves on the House Judiciary Com-mittee, which handles issue ranging
from terrorism to protection of civilliberties, Chief Deputy Whip, Sen-
ior Whip, the only freshman chosen
to serve on the Whip team.
Rep. Wasserman Schultz is a per-
son respected by her colleagues for
her tenacity and her hard work onmany issues. Her first term was
marked with remarkable success fora freshman member then serving inthe minority.
A fighter for South Florida fami-lies, Rep. Wasserman Schultz has
worked hard to protect children.
Some of her accomplishments in
the field include the passage of thePROTECT Our Children Act,
which creates the largest law en-
forcement effort ever formed for
the protection of children (H.R.3845), and, the passage the VirginiaGraeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety
Act (H.R. 1721) to combat child-
hood drowning.
Rep. Wasserman Schultz, the first
Jewish Congresswoman ever
elected from Florida, introduced aresolution, which passed the House
of Representatives and called on the
President to declare a JewishAmerican Heritage Month. The
President subsequently did so, with
the inaugural month in May, 2006.
In March 2009, after she announced
her own battle with breast cancer,Rep. Wasserman Schultz intro-
duced the Education and Aware-
ness Requires Learning Young Act,or EARLY Act (H.R. 1740), a piece
of legislation that directs the Cen-
ters for Disease Control and Pre-vention to develop and implement a
national education campaign about
the threat breast cancer poses to all
young women, and the particularheightened risks of certain ethnic,
cultural and racial groups.
Rep. Wasserman Schultz was bornin Long Island, NY and received
her Bachelors and Masters de-
grees from University of Florida. She and her husband Steve live in
Weston, Florida with their three
children.
All of this experience serves to en-
hance her commitment to lowerhealth care costs, improve the qual-
ity of education, protect Social Se-
curity and Medicare, and provide a
sensible homeland security plan to
protect our citizens from the ongo-ing threat of terror. She continues to
fight to ensure that our first re-sponders, our local police and fire-
fighters, have the tools they need to
do their jobs. And she continues totake up the fight to give our troops
the equipment and compensation
they deserve.
Debbie Wasserman Schultz was
born in 1966 on Long Island, NY.She attended the University of Flor-ida and graduated with a Bachelors
Degree in Political Science in 1988
and with a Masters Degree in1990. She has been married to
Steve Schultz for 17 years and to-
gether they have three children. TheCongresswoman is proud to call
South Florida home where she re-
sides with her family in Weston.
