STRONACHTOWNSHIP A chemistryclass comprised of juniorsfrom Manistee High Schoolgot a golden ticket to tourthe Martin Marietta factory
Monday.There wasnt a river of
chocolate like the classicstory Willy Wonka andthe Chocolate Factory, butthere were ponds of waterturned chalky white frommagnesium.
Students learned the insand outs of how the mag-nesium products made atthe plant are produced.
The Martin MariettaMagnesia SpecialtiesManistee Plant manufac-tures magnesium oxide
and magnesium hydroxideproducts for various appli-cations, including envi-ronmental, agricultural, plastics, rubber, steel andothers.
The plant operates 24hours per day, seven days aweek and employs approxi-mately 125 people. Rawbrine is pumped from theFiler sandstone formationlocated in Manistee andnorthern Mason counties
and is transferred to theplant storage by a large net-
work of pipelines. Dolomiticlime is received primarily byrail from its sister plant in
Woodville, Ohio.The class was intro-
duced to every aspect of the
process, from the clarifiersto the reactor systems tohow stabilized magnesiumhydroxide slurry and adry magnesium hydroxidepowder are produced.
This is a very goodthing to bring the stu-dents through, saidBob Gutowski, engineer-ing manager at MartinMarietta.
Classes from BearLake and Kaleva Norman
Dickson schools have alsobeen brought through theplant, which is like scienceclass come to life.
I think its importantfor (the students) to seethat some of the things welearn in class are used in
the real world, said RyanODonnell, science teacherat Manistee High School.
The students enjoyedthe hands-on learningexperience.
It was pretty interest-ing, said Jessie Kelley,a junior at MHS. Welearned some of the samethings in our chemistryclass.

With the wonderfulwarm rain last week, I thinkwe can safely announcethat spring is here. I couldhave cheerfully choked thatgroundhog the week beforewith that last blast of winter,
but all is forgiven now. There is one exception.
After the long hard win-ter, I, like so many, steppedon the trusty bathroomscale for the first time inseveral months and noteda malfunction. I mean aserious malfunction. Thenumbers were considerablyhigher than they were lastSeptember.
The first thing I did wassearch my drawers ... forthe scale owners manual. There had to be something
in there pertaining to propermaintenance of the device. Itprobably just needed an oilchange. Like so many otheritems that I put away forsafe keeping, I couldnt findthe darn thing.
Being somewhatmechanically inclined, I setout to make the necessaryadjustments. Grasping bothsides securely, I shook thedaylights out of it. Well, let me tell you, that cre-ated such a cloud of dustI could hardly see my wayto the door to gasp for air.
It was obvious someonehad been asking to use myrestroom for reasons otherthan relieving themselves ofthe obvious things for whichthey should have been inthere or a reasonable fac-simile thereof.
Ill wait while you catchup.
It wasnt long before thespouse arrived on the sceneto inquire of the commotion. He is usually very sympa-thetic and normally willingto fix whatever it is that is
troubling me. Well, thiswasnt one of those times. Iexplained that the scale wasall out of kilter and neededto be fixed.
Whats wrong with it,he asked innocently.
It doesnt weigh right! Its way out of kilter, I saidknowingly.
Before he attempted anyadjustments, he put it on thefloor and stepped on it. Imthinking to myself, boy is hegoing to blow a gasket whenhe sees those numbers!
He glanced in my direc-tion and said, It might bea pound or two off, but itslookin pretty good to me.
Well, Im a bettermechanic than I thought!I said boastfully. I guess
I fixed it! Let me on thatbaby! You know, when two
people have lived togetherfor as long as we have, sometimes words arent nec-essary to convey a message. He doesnt know how closehe was to being in the same
boat with that groundhog Imentioned earlier.
It appears I have takenon a bit of baggage over the
winter. Since the inventionof the stretch pant, elastic
waist, and sweat suit, etc.,it is easy to perhaps not
notice a more than neces-sary enhancement to the
waistline. This obviously isthe affliction from which Iam suffering.
Thank you for your con-cern.
This is certainly some-thing Im going to addressprior to my next doctorappointment, but that isntuntil September so I havea little wiggle room -- ineverything except thosestretch pants!
And now another
thought.My mother had a hear-
ing problem. My children, grandchildren, and someof those who say they aremy friends, tell me I havea hearing problem. Theydont say anything about thespouses hearing problem. He cant hear me at all! Isuspect there are other wives
who may have husbands inthe same condition. I dontknow how they do it, but
they can come down with acase of deaf in one ear andcant hear out of the otherquicker than it takes to buya dollars worth of gas thesedays.
The doctor told me Ihave wax buildup. Mymind wanders to the wax
buildup in front of therefrigeration, but I dontthink thats what he meant.Through research on thenet, Ive learned there arenumerous ways to remove
wax buildup such as running
warm water in your earsin the shower to setting offsmall dynamite explosionsto shake it loose. I think myears are just fine! My atten-tion span is the problem. Iam easily distracted whensome people talk to me.
You figure it out.As usual, P.J.

STORY IDEA?If you have a story idea,
contact our managing editor, David L.
Barber, at (231) 398-3113 or e-mail
him at [email protected].
There are three thingsabout Manistee County thatI love more than anything.
What are they you ask?June, July and August.I will argue with anyone
(who has the nerve to sign
their letter) that you cantfind a better place in the
world to live during thosethree months. We reallyhave it all, and although itis a short time frame thereisnt anyplace I would rath-er live and vacation-basedthis time of the year.
Vacation?Thats right, with the
price of gasoline almostequaling a fine vintage
wine, what better place tospend your hard-earnedmoney than right here athome. We have a lot tooffer, and the great thingabout that is you will behelping your friends andneighbors in the process bysupporting their vacation
businesses.And you want to know
one of the best parts? Youcan sleep in a comfortable
bed every night yourown.
I am a person who lovesto be outside. That is prob-
ably more true than everbecause this winter we hadmore inside time thanany of us would care toexperience.
When you look at whatwe have to offer in this areait really is quite phenom-enal. Just pick a directionin Manistee County and
you can find somethinggreat to do.
To the west is LakeMichigan and we all know
what that has to offer.Sandy beautiful beaches,
boating, jet skis, fishingand so much more. It is thepremier piece of the puzzlein this paradise we callhome.
I ask, can you find abetter place to enjoy theworlds greatest sunsets atdusk? Every night is anoth-er landscape painting, andthe amazing thing is no twoare exactly alike, so you cango down every night to see
a whole new show.Look to the east and
what do you find? TheManistee National Forest, the Big Manistee and LittleManistee rivers where thefishing is always great. If
that isnt enough, then thebackwaters of Tippy Damhave plenty to offer for fish-ing and fun.
What I love is the hikingtrails. The North CountryTrail and the ManisteeRiver Trail are two of the
best anywhere, and greatfor hiking along the BigManistee River. The wildlifeand natural beauty of thearea would make the perfectpicture for any postcard you
want to send to a friend. There has been more
than one occasion I havewitnessed a bald eagle soar-ing down the Big ManisteeRiver with a beautiful bluesky as the backdrop on asummer day. It is some-thing where the true beautydoesnt hit home on until
you see it in person.Still not satisfied? Then check out
Rainbow Bend, SawdustHole, Red Bridge and takein some of the beautifulsights you will ever seealong the river. Whatever
you do, dont forget the Big
M Trails for some greatmountain biking, hikingand just plain old exploring.
Still not convinced thatthis is vacation paradise?
Ok lets go a differentdirection.
Spin our compassaround and point it northand you will find plenty of
beauty. Try checking outPortage Lake on a sunnyday when the light is justtwinkling off the water.Keep your eyes open asthere will be jet skis, sail-
boats and fishing boats
plenty of fishing boats todot the horizon all aroundthe lake.
Want to find elegancein its finest form from thepast? Then take some timeto check out Portage Pointarea, and I guarantee you
will want to instantly put upyour feet and wait for thenext sunset with the rest ofthe tourists.
However, before youeven reach Onekama jumpon your bike and take a ridealong M-110 or Dune Woodas the long time locals havecalled it for the past 75
years and more. The ridenestles in and out alongthe beautiful curves of theshoreline, and is one fantas-tic ride.
Ride a little furtherdown the road on M-22and you will discover oneof the best secrets in thecounty in Arcadia. It is sim-ply beautiful, and if your
breath isnt taken away onthe huge bluff just north of
Arcadia then get someoneto check your pulse because
you might not be breathinganymore. That alone would be
enough to keep most peoplebusy, but we havent evenstopped the bus at BearLake yet. Its a virtual vaca-tion paradise. The lake is
just like Portage Lake interms of beauty and whatit brings to that little com-munity.
So you like to golf? You can play almost all
week long at a different out-standing golf course with-out ever passing a sign that
says you are now leavingManistee County. Courses
vary in all price rangesso there is something foreveryone to enjoy.
Is canoeing or kayak-ing your thing? Check outour rivers and I guarantee
you will love what you findbecause it is an endlessadventure around each
bend.Nightlife you say?
With a casino that offersgaming, top notch enter-tainment, and food from
some outstanding eatingestablishments around thecounty and you have a rec-ipe for gaining 10 pounds.
What is more important isyou can watch top nameentertainers without evenleaving the county.
Want to see shows thatwill make you think you areon Broadway? Then checkout the Ramsdell Theatreand before the show viewartwork that would makeany big name gallery envi-ous at the Manistee ArtInstitute exhibits at the T.
Walter Hardy Hall of theRamsdell Theatre.
Vacation somewhereelse?
Why, when you live inthe place where everyoneelse comes to vacation?
It is something to thinkabout until I...
See you nextWednesday.

TOUR:FROM PAGE 1AMartin Mariettas roots
trace back to the beginningsof the Standard Lime andCement Company on theEast Coast in 1888. In 1945several Manistee chemicalcompanies advertised inthe Wall Street Journal thatthey had magnesium chlo-ride available, and Standard
Lime answered the ad andsoon started using the mag-nesium chloride, along withtheir lime, to make productsfor use in the steel industry.
The lime that is mixedwith the brine comes fromnorthwest Ohio about1,000 tons, or 10 rail carsper day. The railroad isessential to the company,Gutowski said. In addition
to bringing in 90 percent ofthe lime, the company shipsabout 50 percent of its fin-ished products by rail.
The white powder, inthe form of both magne-sium hydroxide and mag-nesium oxide, is shippedin bags from 50 to 2,000pounds and also in bulk.
Additionally, a liquid formis shipped in tank cars formunicipalities and indus-trial plants to use for watertreatment.
The materials MartinMarietta makes, which arenot at all toxic, are usedfor many purposes fromserving as a flame retardantin plastic to additives in ani-mal feed and plant food.
Manistee High School students learned about howthe large clarifiers operate.
