MANISTEE Two interesting construction proj-ects are underway at the Ramsdell Theatre.

A group of volunteers led by John Bell are busy

replacing the stage floor at the theater. Bell, whois a member of the boards for both the City ofManistee Ramsdell Theatre Governance Authorityand the Manistee Civic Players, said that the two

volunteers who have done the most work on theproject are Roger Betts and Tim Giess.

Another project underway in the building is onethat will improve access from the theater to thebasement restrooms. A new stairway will be addedat the back of the theater house at the former loca-tion of the mens restroom. At the bottom of thestairway a new doorway through the 18-inch stone

wall that separates the theater and hall sides of thebuilding will go directly to the restroom area.

PauLon Construction Management of Holly was

the low bidder on the project, and that companysowner, Lon Marshall, said he and his sons areenjoying their work in the historic building.

Both projects should be completed soon, inplenty of time for upcoming spring activities in thebulding.

The stage floor will be much smoother after many of the trap doors and elevatorsare eliminated and the new flooring is installed.

    THE RAMSDELLS MAKEOVER

Carl Marshall of PauLonConstruction Managementmoves debris so the floor can bepoured for the new entryway tothe Ramsdell restrooms.

(ABOVE) Volunteers, fromthe left, John Bell, Roger

Betts and Tim Giess closeup part of the stage that atone time was used to store

backdrops. (AT LEFT) Inremoving the top layer of

stage flooring, the footlightsat the front of the stage

were uncovered. The newfloor will cover them again,

since they have no func-tionality in modern stage

    lighting.

MANISTEE The ManisteeRecreation Association board ofdirectors has selected its recipientsof the 2010 Charles E. SchoedelOutstanding Service Award. At ourannual business meeting Mondayevening, the following communitymembers were presented with thisservice award for their contributionsto our community.

Dr. Christa Johnson captureda nomination for her efforts in

bringing Healthy Active ManisteeWeek to the city of Manistee.Johnson has worked closely with theplanning commission and the non-

motorized transportation committeefor the past two years and has suc-cessfully planned and orchestratedthis week-long event that promotesfitness throughout our community.Healthy Active Manistee is a weekpacked with activities for everyonein an effort to encourage the start ofa lifelong habit of staying healthy.Personally, Johnson is an avidtri-athlete, competing in multipleIronman and several long distanceroad races this past year. She is anindividual who is sharing her pas-sion for fitness with our communityand for that we are grateful.

The Manistee County LittleLeague is the recipient in the

business/organization category.Receiving the award for the organi-zation was president Mike Feliczakand past president Dave Richards. The Little League program orga-nizes more than 400 interested ballplayers, placing them on more than30 teams throughout the county. It recruits and prepares volunteercoaches for all the teams, lines upumpires, and organizes maintenancecrews to take care of the fields. Inthe offseason the organization plansfor the season ahead by looking to

improve the quality of the fields, refurbishing when needed, securinggrant money and recruiting volun-teer labor to accomplish the task.Hats, or ball caps, off to ManisteeCounty Little League for keeping

Americas favorite pastime alive inManistee County.
