When it comes to thestudy of alternative energyand recycling issues, thereare few elementary schoolclasses anywhere that areas up on those subjects asConnie Josvais at KennedyElementary.
For the past 12 years,Josvai has included thosesubjects in her classscurriculum and it hasresulted in them beingnamed School of the Yearin Michigan many timesby the National EnergyEducation Developmentproject. One of the manythings they do to earnthat honor is they host anenergy fair every year atthe school.
This is the fourth yearthat we have done the fair, and the kids just love it,said Josvai.
The way it works isJosvais students create anenergy related project that
is on display next to thegame booth they are run-ning for the fair. They askthe students questions onenergy from their project, and if they are answeredcorrectly, the studentsreceive the chance to play acarnival-like game.
If they cant answerthe questions, all they haveto do is read the projectand it will give them theanswers, said Josvai. After answering the ques-
tions correctly, it allowsthem to play the games
where they can win ticketsthat they can exchange forgifts.
Josvai said that thisyear they had seven goalsto qualify for the ProjectNEED School of the Yearand that the fair was thelast one they had to attainin that process. It is some-thing that Josvai said the

FAIR:FROM PAGE 1kids have put in a greatdeal of effort to achieve thisyear.
The kids have workedreally hard on their proj-ects and it shows, saidJosvai. I am very proud ofthem, and this is importantto learn about alternativeenergy because those aregoing to be the jobs of thefuture.
Josvai said that thecompetition for the Schoolof the Year is becomingmore intense. She said
schools in the program aregetting more innovativeevery year.
More and more schoolsare becoming active in theProject Need every year, soit makes it more difficult to
win awards, said Josvai. The Kennedy teacher
said that this year studentsfrom all the other MAPSelementary schools wereable to come to KennedyElementary School thanksto the efforts of bus garagesupervisor Walt Froncek.
He set it up with a busso it would be easy for thekids from other buildings toget kids here for the fair, said Josvai.
This year, Josvai isextremely proud of thefact that three of her stu-dents applied for being
youth staff members at theProject NEED NationalConference and two have
been accepted for thosepositions.
It just shows how theyfeel about this program, said Josvai.
More importantly,Josvai is proud of the factthat some of the students
who began the program inthose early years are nowpursuing careers in energyrelated fields.
Many of the first onesare into college and pursu-ing careers as engineers or
going into science relatedjobs, so I am very proud ofthem.
(ABOVE) There weremany nice prizes forthose students who
earned enough tickets atthe Kennedy Energy Fair.
(AT RIGHT) Everyonewanted the chance to
