MANISTEE When you are in thefourth grade there are many times whenseeing something is actually believing it.

Students at Kennedy ElementarySchool had the opportunity this weekto get an up close and personal look atsome of Michigans amphibians thanksto the efforts of Jim McGrath of NatureDiscovery. He brought up seven different

inds of amphibians for the students toview including black snakes, blue racers,frogs, turtles and more.

The whole idea behind the visit was to

ive the students a better understandingof the role amphibians play in our world.Many times people go for years withoutseeing some of the 52 species located inMichigan, and McGrath gives the studentsnot only the opportunity to see them, butto touch them in some instances.

You can use the knowledge you learntoday when you walk out the door of your

ouse because now you know about thesethings, and how they are in your environ-ment, said McGrath.

McGrath is a wildlife biologist and araduate of Michigan State University

who has been putting on these presenta-tions for the past 22 years. He puts on anexhibit that holds the childrens interest,

but also allows them to learn a great deal

This is all we do,and we have 42 of the 52amphibians in Michiganlocated by our housein Williamston, saidMcGrath. We do shows(for) all ages and theycan be tailored to anylevel.

We have this hugecaptive collection of

reptiles and amphibiansthat we use for educa-tional purposes. We

brought with us todaya sampling of frogs,salamanders, turtles andsnakes that are native tothis area.

He said that the mainfocus of what they do isto educate people aboutthe wildlife they mightencounter in the state,and the proper way to

I teach them about howthey are native to this area,and misconceptions aboutthem especially about thesnakes versus the reality,said McGrath.

During his visit toKennedy Elementaryschool, students had the

chance to touch blacksnakes. They also had thechance to see blue racersand other snakes up close.Students also were givenan education on the dif-ferent types of frogs in thestate and how they differ insound and lifestyle.

We want this to besomething that the kidsdont only learn from, butto go home and teach peo-ple about this because it issomething not in their nor-mal schooling. There is a lot

to teach parents about thesethings, said McGrath.It proved to be another

hands-on lesson that goesbeyond the classroom andteaches students how to seenature up close and per-sonal.
