BACKGROUND TO THE INCLUSIVELEADERSHIP PROJECTIn the past there have been many attempts to develop and deliver training for Equality, Diversity andInclusion which have been responsible for and resulted in confusion, misconceptions and themisunderstandings of appreciating fully the different concept’s objectives and focus around thesetopics.

Research has shown that compliance based training does not always create the positive changesrequired for organisational development. Such approaches can be ineffective, viewed as tokenistic andnot always productive. In many cases the lines between the concepts of Equality, Diversity andInclusion are ‘fuzzy’ and much of the training carried out over the last twenty years for the NHS (andother organisations) has not explained the history, thoughts or the intention behind each concept.

Therefore there is a need to correct these misconceptions and makethe concept of Inclusion interesting, exciting and relevant, buildingon the positive notion of Equality, Diversity and making the NHS afully inclusive culture. For this to happen Inclusion needs to bedefined, and rebranded, changing the attitude of individuals andthe organisation’s approach, this is one of the focuses of theInclusive Leadership project.

Inclusion is becoming increasingly important to the development ofall NHS organisations to ensure that the delivery and provision ofhealthcare is fit for the 21st century and fit for purpose. At its coreInclusion holds the presupposition that people feel and performbetter when they can be themselves, this is where the majorbenefits of Inclusion will be realised. Therefore to ensure Inclusion is acknowledged and the benefitsachieved the Inclusion agenda must be promoted throughout the organisation and leadershipprogrammes.

The aspiration of the Inclusive Leadership training is to ensure that an Inclusive culture develops andspreads throughout the West Midlands, with a network of individuals who understand themultidimensional, multifaceted complex nature of Inclusion.

THE INCLUSIVE LEADERSHIP PROJECTFollowing a scoping exercise in 2013 of the current Equality, Diversity and Inclusion approach in WestMidlands it was determined by the West Midlands Local Delivery Partner(LDP)/HEWM Leadership that achange in approach was required to develop a more engaging programme to lead towards culturalchange within organisations.

The overarching aim is to ensure the development of Inclusive Leadership within all regionaland local leadership activity.

The purpose of our approach is to:

The Inclusion Leadership Project began over 12 months ago in July 2013 producing in Stageone:-

• Inclusion Framework setting out the objectives and goals for Inclusion within the West Midlands• Inclusion branding toolkit and workbook developed• 1 day, half a day and 1 hour workshops developed• Inclusive Master classes piloted in partnership with local NHS organisations (Partnership supported

and rolled out by Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust)• Inclusion Guide• Foundation Toolkit• Branding exercise; identifying the brand of Inclusion

Stage one of the Inclusive Leadership project has added to the investment made by West Midlands inInclusion and enabled us to build a sustainable and more comprehensive programme for Stage two.The next stage is where the organisational training and development programmes make inclusion areality, integrating it into the organisation where it can become a part of the purpose for ‘EVERYONE’sNHS’.

Inclusion is not an answer to a problem, it’s an initiative and opportunity to improve ourselves andothers by developing the organisation and the society in which we live. The benefits of achieving realinclusion are many and work at all levels; the individual, organisational and societal levels.

The approach has a unique mixture of social policy, social neuroscience, psychological artistry and much more, which when combined with theatrical elements such asstorytelling, illusions and metaphors makes the material both entertaining and engaging whilst ensuringthe learning takes place. Thisproject, the training, the sessions and thematerials work from a psychologicalperceptive with a focus on subconsciousbias and implicit associations.

INCLUSIVE LEADERSHIPMASTERCLASS APPROACHInclusion is becoming increasingly important to the development, delivery and provision of healthcareand the NHS in the 21st century. It is therefore necessary to ensure that Inclusion is acknowledged as aroute to ensuring NHS organisations are fit for purpose. This can be demonstrated by ensuring thatInclusion and the Inclusion agenda is promoted throughout the organisation and leadership programmes.

The Inclusive Leadership Project is about instigating a change programme where real inclusion isintegrated and becomes part of the purpose ‘EVERYONE’s NHS’.

DIVERSITY IS NOT A CHOICE IT IS ALL AROUND US,BEING INCLUSIVE IS A CHOICE WE MAKE.

There are 2 Masterclasses to choose from the 1 day and the ½ day. Both masterclasses are about buildingupon and learning from the past and using the most recent unique mixture of social policy, social neuro-science psychological artistry and much more which is then combined with theatrical elements such asstorytelling, illusions and metaphors to illustrate what Inclusion is about in the 21st Century. The masterclasses are about taking a fresh view of Inclusion and the Inclusive Leadership Project.

The approach taken for the Masterclasses is definitely not ‘business as usual’.
