CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

FROM OUR PASTOR

“He gave five talents to one, two to another and one to the other, each according to their ability.” One scripture scholar writes that a talent was equal to 6,000 denarii, and one denarius was a day’s wage, so one talent was equal to 16 years’ wages. There’s a touch of the absurd in this parable for the sum given out was extravagant. But it rings true in the ancient context, for masters of large estates often allowed trusted slaves, known as oikonomos (from which we get the word “economy”) to handle finances and run their estates when they were away in the city. It would seem that the master had little confidence in the servant who was given custody of the one talent, as Jesus tells us in the intro to the story. If we fast forward the story to our age, perhaps this guy/girl was more of a dreamer than the other two, neither skilled nor interested in the world of business, investments or high finance. Further, this person may have chosen prematurely to bury the very gift of his/her life, and doesn’t want to get involved in the world of politics, or the pettiness of 21st century life. They see themselves as too special to put on overalls and get rid of that junk in the garage, or do the dishes. Detached, unbothered, bewildered. Does that sound familiar? Haven’t we to some degree buried our talent, repressing the particular gifts God has given us to make a difference in the world? Oh sure, we try to snap out of it. We wake up one morning and say, “This is it! I’m going to break out of this rut and stop complaining, stop being mesmerized by cable TV and become an energized person.” Then we open the refrigerator to find we’re out of eggs, sigh, and grow philosophical again. The sofa looks mighty inviting, doesn’t’ it? But, not to worry. Even as the season gets darker and colder, making light of our lethargy and exploding our fantasy life with that wonderful liturgical device called the Advent-Christmas season. Yep, pretty soon an angry John the Baptizer will come shouting through our dormitories, telling us all to wake up! And the angels will hustle us off to Bethlehem to rekindle what’s left of the embers of last spring’s Pentecost. And re-energized with that high octane grace, perhaps we’ll be worthy of handling two, or three or more talents next time around. Another reminder we have of this truth is the BOOK OF THE DEAD that is available at the front doors of the church all this month. Please take some time to write down the names of those you “wait in joyful hope” to see one day in that place of light and peace, those whose memory still burns brightly in your heart. Fill the page with the names of everybody you ever remembered who has died…writing the names is a deliberate way to recall your love for them. And let the children write in the book, too; it’s quite moving to see childlike scrawl painfully spelling out “Pop-pop” or “Gram”. And for Pete’s sake, don’t worry about taking time in line…it’s your time, your grief, your hope. Have a good week! Fr. Glenn
