CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

FROM OUR PASTOR “FRIEND, I AM DOING YOU NO WRONG!” Don’t we love to hate this story? It seems so unfair. Don’t people who work longer and harder deserve more pay? How can it be fair that all get paid the same but haven’t worked the same amount of time? Maybe a more contemporary example would be people who plan a flight somewhere, and buy their tickets far in advance, ensuring their reserved seat. Others rush to “Cheap-O-Air” or “Kayak” at the last minute and get a nice aisle seat next to the early birds at half the price and they all end up at the same destination at the same time as those who planned ahead. Fair? Several years ago a single mother of three whose husband deserted them helped me understand the story from a different perspective. She had little to no formal education and few marketable skills and went regularly to the unemployment office to wait, hoping for a job. She saw in the story that the ones who were “idle all day” were not lazy; they would gladly work if hired. But they were always left behind because they were old, frail, unskilled or unable to work very strenuously…they were like her, waiting in the unemployment line. She observed that if the landowner gave anything but the full day’s wage to those hired last, what good would that do? How would they feed their children? Sure those hired early worked all day in the heat, but they had the satisfaction of knowing all day long that they would be able to provide for their families. Justice is about everybody being able to eat at the end of the day, no matter what capacity to work each possessed. Does it take away anything from the first hired if the last hired receive the same wage? In the end the question is about God’s goodness, which is extended equally to all, and how difficult it is for us not to look enviously on goodness poured out on others, even as it has been lavished on us. And ain’t it a great relief that God’s justice does not mean that people get what they deserve? THANK YOU What a great time at last week’s parish picnic! There were just over 230 at Mass, but we saw some of you come just for the food, which was spectacular. Big boys playing with fire, Teen Shepherds helping with games and psychedelic snow cone designs, ARS women stocking the food table, little kids all sugared-up running in circles, and enough s’mores fixin’s left for the Men’s Club to have a Hershey’s brewfest Monday night! I think we’ve landed on a plan for the next couple years. Thanks to all those who cooked, set up, put up tents and took them down, chair carriers and table folders, the youth choir and Monica’s broken finger, coffee makers and pot washers, floor sweepers and table coverers (Spellcheck says that’s a word!), bonfire extinguishers and table wipers, all those who ministered at “Mass in the grass” and those who came to just enjoy it all! It was a pleasure to be there.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK AT MASS On October 15 at the 11:30 AM Mass, we will celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Though the sacrament usually is celebrated in a home or hospital setting with family present, if possible, the Church

WEST MIDDLESEX, PA encourages us to celebrate it in the context of weekend liturgy with the parish family in attendance. Those who suffer from a chronic weakness, any who are weakened by age or seek the Holy Spirit’s healing power are welcomed to present themselves for the sacrament. There will be more information in the bulletin as the date approaches, but we’re alerting the parish now in case transportation may need to be arranged in advance. Please get the word out to any of our shut-ins and those who can’t attend on a regular basis due to illness or infirmity. Enjoy your week! Fr. Glenn PARISH COUNCIL WOULD LIKE TO THANK: All those who attended, contributed (with food or their time) or otherwise supported the annual parish picnic this past weekend. Holding it on a Saturday evening was a change from previous picnics and the support was overwhelming—we had over 250 parishioners and guests in attendance. We will hold a wrap-up meeting sometime over the next week and welcome all suggestions—positive or negative! Feel free to submit them to any member of parish council or forward them directly to the parish office. Your ideas will help us as we plan next year’s picnic!

RELIGIOUS ED PARENT MEETING Grs. 7 – 11: this Sun., Sept. 24 @ 7:45 pm - new time GAZEBO PROJECT THANK YOU to those who have recently made monetary donations to this project: John & Shirley Woge. Donations: make check out to Good Shepherd Ch. - write “Gazebo” in the memo line.

ANNULMENT INFORMATION SESSIONS Wednesday, October 4 at 7:00 pm at Notre Dame, Hermitage. In 2015 Pope Francis launched the most significant reform of the Church’s norms regarding the nullity of marriage in over 30 years. His desire to enact this reform was “fed by the great number of Christian faithful who, as they seek to assuage their consciences, are often kept back from the juridical structures of the Church because of physical or moral distance. Thus charity and mercy demand that the Church, like a good mother, be near her children who feel themselves estranged from her” (Mitis iudex Dominus Iesus, Introduction). It is with this in mind that the Office of the Tribunal and Matrimonial Concerns is pleased to take their services on the road to the people of the Erie Diocese. Anyone interested in pursuing a declaration of nullity or who simply would like to learn about the process is invited. Each session will include a short presentation on the annulment process followed by the opportunity for individuals to meet one-on-one with a member of the Tribunal staff to ask individual questions and to get the process started. Call 814-824-1140 with any questions. Other sessions @ 7 pm: Oct. 11, St. Bernard, Bradford; Oct. 18, St. Catherine, Dubois; Oct. 25, St. Boniface, Erie.
