The mission of the universities of applied sciences

is to provide professional higher education geared to the requirements and development of working life, to support one's professional development, and to carry out research and development that serves the education, the work life, regional development and industry and commerce of the region.  The universities of applied sciences provide higher education degrees with a combination of theory and practice.  The universities of applied sciences are important regional factors and producers of labour force. The universities of applied sciences focus in their research and development activities to serve the development needs of their region.

International co-operation

Internationality has always been an important part of the operation of the universities of applied sciences and it's role is becoming more and more important due to the challenges brought by globalization.

The target of the international affairs is to increase and support the international skills of the students, teachers and other personnel. The international activities are carried out in cooperation of education, research, working life and the surrounding society. The most important forms of action are mobility of teachers and students, courses in foreign languages, home internationalization and international education, research and development projects.

European Higher Education Area

The building of the European Higher Education Area (abbreviated EHEA and a.k.a the Bologna process) by the year 2010, and the requirements followed by it are a central part of international activities.

Once the targets set by the Bologna process are reached, EHEA is more competitive and attractive compared to other parts of the world.

Health Promotion and Nurses` Guidance Skills (2004-2007)TEMPUS –project

Outputs and Outcomes of the project:

1. Updated and renewed content in nursing education, which corresponds to the needs of long-term patient care. Course content is based on researched and updated nursing/medical data which has been applied to teaching.

2. Introducing developed and implemented courses in promoting nurses´ guidance skills into nursing curricula. Production of guidance materials for students and teachers on different levels of education. 3. Planned and implemented independent development phases within consortium member institutions, during which the new learning philosophy has been applied and practiced and the interim results of the project have been introduced.

(2/2)Forestry teachers’ training Project (2006-2009)

Part of Finnish - Russian Development Programme on Sustainable Forest Management and Conservation of Biodiversity in North-West Russia.Financed by the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Results of the project:

Basis for the curriculum standard (forest and forest park management) was created during the process.The final version was finished in spring 2009 and it was approved by the Russian Ministry of Education in September 2009.Close co- operation between the vice-rectors and teachers of the participating colleges during the project has led to an active network inside Russia The participants got a broader view on education and training. They were able to learn about and see educational and pedagogical practices in two European Union countries (Estonia and Finland)

Program aims:

The main objectives of the cooperation is to create a well-functioning network between the three partners which can produce

1. interest and awareness of the students concerning the neighboring country, her culture, language, and business opportunities

2. new networks between students, teachers and Finnish/Russian SME’s

3. high quality knowledge concerning international market research and Russian markets (forestry and paper technology)

Aim of the project:

Increasing the degree of transparency and compatibility between higher education and professional postgraduate nursing and health care education gained in the partner organisations. Improving the quality and increasing the volume of mobility and cooperation between the partner institutions.

Enabling the students and teachers of the partner institutions to make reseach work together and to deepen and share their knowledge and know-how in Elderly Care.

Facilitating the development of innovative adult education practices and pedagogy in multi-professional part-time education in the field of nursing and health care, and their transfer into lifelong learning.

Joint project between (TAMK, UTA, TUT, SeAMK, SAMK)20 Russian partner universities

Aim of the project:

The main objective of this project is to further strengthen the academic collaboration in various forms between Finnish and Russian partner universities and to promote student and teacher mobility and cultural understanding between these two countries.  Furthermore, this project aims at increasing the participating students’ awareness of the special issues, challenges and differences between Russian and Finnish industry and business culture. The special attention will be paid to the topic area of sustainable development as one important dimension of business cooperation . In addition, it tries to offer students the opportunity to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Mobility and the recognition of the studies will be easier and wider in the coming years.
