TThe days are getting longer and the weather finally seems to be over its ice age phase so it’s about time to get back outside again and enjoy nature. However, just because you’re trekking through muddy woods or just out for the day with the little ones, it doesn’t mean that you have to leave your fashion sense at home.

Practicality and fashion might not always have gone hand in hand; just take a look at some of Vivienne Westwood’s designs. That being said, it is easy to dress sensibly and still look great so why not give it a go?

For example, if you’re on a day out with the little ones, you’re going to need tough comfortable clothes to keep up with their antics. Jeans fit the bill perfectly here: they’re hard wearing, they’re comfy and, unless you’re very fussy or label obsessed, they’re nice and cheap so you don’t have to worry too much about them getting mucky or a bit bedraggled. What’s more with all the different styles out there, there’s a perfect pair for everyone.

If you’re a pear shape, try going for jeans with a slight boot cut to balance out your fuller hips or thighs to keep you in proportion. For all the apple shaped ladies, your best style is a straight leg as it will show off your assets. Jeans with a bit of stretch are also a good idea as they’ll give you a bit more breathing space for your tummy. High-waisted jeans give petite women the appearance of an extra few inches of height and skinny jeans show off tall women’s legs beautifully.

Next up on the list is tops. These are really easy because you can get away with a simple white vest top if you’re not in the mood for anything fancy and still look pretty stylish. Alternatively, opt for a simple pattern to look chic on your day out.

Stripes are a big trend for spring/summer 2013 so wear your print with pride! Another easy way to add a splash of style to your outfit is to add a figure hugging blazer. These are also really easy to get hold of in different coloured stripes. Try going for blue or red

stripes for a patriotic sailor look.

Last but certainly not least; let’s talk shoes. As lovely as heels are, they’re not ideal for adventurous activities. They just don’t mix well with mud, gravel or cobbles so this is where fashion might have to take a back seat – but it doesn’t have to!

The answer to this shoe practicality issue is wellies. Wellies are useful, they’re easy to clean and there’s now a wide range of pretty designs to choose from on the high-street so there’s no need to settle for plain dark green or navy. Keep a look out in large supermarkets for great value wellies with lovely patterns.

Now that your outfit is sorted, let’s just hope that the British weather holds up so that you can showcase your new look in the wonderful outdoors.

A year ago, Spotlight featured an article on Trent Windsurfing Club based in Long Eaton and its endeavours to promote the

many benefits this sport can bring and encourage people to give it a try. One of the club’s ambitions is to make windsurfing as affordable and accessible as possible, both to maintain the popularity of this Olympic discipline and to build a solid foundation for the club. The club’s chairman, Hywel Harris, commented: “Our history dates back some 30 years now and over this time the club has witnessed many advances in the sport in terms of easier access, a much shorter learning curve from beginner to intermediate level and massive advances in equipment.” The club was successful in winning a Sport England grant back in 2012 and have made a substantial investment in new equipment and facilities, with further improvements planned over the coming months.

Hywel continued, “with a full diary of events scheduled for 2013, we’re looking forward to a busy season ahead and to welcoming new members into our club.”

Trent Windsurfing Club will again be running a series of free taster sessions under a qualified instructor on 8th and 9th June 2013 with more scheduled for later in the year, for people wishing to give windsurfing a try! All equipment is supplied, however, numbers are limited, so if you would like to take part,

visit their website for details at www.trentwindsurfingclub.co.uk. For those that decide to ‘take the plunge’, Trent Windsurfing Club now has 8 full sets of beginner equipment for any club member to use anytime they like. The club also organises regular training sessions for advice and guidance and trips and activities throughout the year.

Road cycling is an exhilarating way to challenge yourself and get fit

You know what they say about riding a bike – once you’ve learned you never forget. So if you enjoyed zooming down hills when you were younger (and struggling up them!) road cycling may be the ideal sport for you.

As the name suggests, road cycling involves riding exclusively on roads, and the aim is to build up your speed and the distance you can cover.

It’s a very efficient way to get fit and lose weight as it’s one of the few sports that you can sustain for two to four hours. Like running, it gets you out in the fresh air, but it is low impact and places less strain on your joints.

Road bikes are designed for racing. They have a lightweight frame, narrow tyres and rounded handlebars so that you sit forward in an aerodynamic position. You can pay anything from £150 to £5000 plus. Cheaper bikes are made from steel or aluminium, while the more expensive are carbon fibre or titanium, which is amazingly strong and light.

If you decide to take up the sport seriously, look for a well-known brand and expect to pay around £600. Getting the right size is important, so ask your local bike shop for advice. Your legs should be almost straight when they are on the pedal at bottom of the turn.

There are two types of pedals on road bikes. Platform pedals are like those on a traditional bicycle and you will need to add toe clips. Modern clipless pedals will need special shoes with cleats on them that fix your foot to the pedals.

The saddle of a road bicycle is normally very narrow and can be uncomfortable, so you may want to get a gel cover or wear padded shorts.

When you’re out on the roads, safety has to be your top priority. A helmet is a must, as is brightly coloured clothing.

Ride your bike as if you were driving a car and obey traffic laws. Take a tool kit with you – a spare inner tube, tyre levers, puncture repair kit, pump and Allen keys are essential. It’s also sensible to carry your address and phone number in

case of an accident.

Think of road cycling as a long-term sport. It will take you a few weeks to get used to your bike and build up your speed and stamina. Joining a club is a great way to keep motivated. You’ll find a directory of over 1500 clubs at www.britishcycling.org.uk ranging from informal groups who ride for pleasure to competitive racing teams.

So what are you waiting for – get on your bike!

Buttermilk Scones with Fruit CompoteMakes 10-12 • Preparation time 15 minutes • Cooking time 15 minutes

Ingredients

Scones450g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting

¼ tsp salt100g cold butter, diced

85g golden caster sugar

Handful of raisins or sultanas (optional)

284ml pot buttermilk

2 tsp vanilla extract

Splash of milk

CompoteFrozen fruit of choice – summer fruit mix is good, sour cherries are fantastic

Sugar to taste

MethodHeat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Sift the flour and salt together. Rub in the butter until the mixture is like fine crumbs. Stir in the sugar and raisins or sultanas if using.Gently warm the buttermilk (don’t throw away the pot) and vanilla in a microwave or pan. Using your largest bowl, quickly tip in some of the flour mix, followed by some of the buttermilk mix, repeating until everything is in the bowl. Use a knife to quickly mix together to form a dough - don’t over-mix it.

Tip onto a floured surface and lightly bring together with your hands a couple of times. Press out gently to about 4cm thick and stamp out rounds with a 6cm or 7cm cutter. Re-shape trimmings, until all the dough is used. Place scones evenly on to a lightly floured baking sheet or two. Add a splash of milk into the buttermilk pot, and then use to glaze the top of each scone. Bake for 10-12 mins until golden and well risen.

To Make The Fruit Compote:Place as much of the frozen fruit as you need in the saucepan, on a gentle heat on the hob on top of your cooker.

Simmer the fruit in the saucepan on the hob until the fruit starts to soften; stir gently now and again just enough so that the fruit does not stick to the pan; do not allow it to burn. Now add sugar to taste - not too much at first. Taste the fruit as you add the sugar so that you do not make it too sweet or leave it too tart. Take care not to burn yourself when testing it! Fruit and sugar get very hot.

Once the fruit has softened, but before it turns to a pulp or goes too mushy, it is ready and you should remove it from the heat to cool. It keeps for 2-3 days in the fridge.

Although The Palace haven’t officially announced Kate Middleton’s exact due date, we know it’s

sometime in July 2013 which makes her 28-32 weeks pregnant.

Some people remark that The Duchess is tiny at the moment. As an Ante/Postnatal Fitness Expert who’s worked with over 900 pregnant and postnatal women, I say it doesn’t really matter. Every pregnancy is different.

Kate’s reportedly doing three Pilates sessions a week to keep herself trim. Pilates is a safe, effective form of exercise that keeps mums-to-be strong, toned and it really helps prepare their body for labour. It’s vital that pregnant mums stay active, keep fit and take an interest in the health and wellbeing of their unborn baby. Pilates provides all of these.

Did you see that the Duchess was filmed playing table tennis and shooting hoops in a Glasgow

homeless shelter recently? She was also reportedly photographed picking up a sledge whilst on holiday in the Swiss Alps which caused some controversy.

For the record, pregnant women can lift weights heavier than a toothpick, and can stay active throughout their pregnancy, so I say if The Duchess wants to pick up a sleigh or play a competitive game of ping pong with her husband, she can do. Pregnancy’s hard work, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have some fun along the way too.

Claire Mockridge is a West Bridgford-based Pregnancy and Postnatal Fitness Expert running specialist exercise classes for pregnant women, new mums and their babies.

For a mother, a child’s wedding is a momentous occasion, a day that you will certainly want to look your best.

Here are some aspects to consider when choosing your outfit:

Colour: Find out what colour the bridesmaids dresses are and try to choose an outfit in a complimentary colour. Most believe that the mother of the bride or groom should not wear white or ivory, these being the bride’s prerogative. Many also frown on black seeing it as a mourning colour and red, believing it to be too bold. The colour should of course flatter your skin tone.

Style: Choose a style that flatters and is also comfortable. Most wedding celebrations are now lengthy affairs, so you will not want to wear something that feels too constricting, or that you are constantly fiddling with. If an off the peg outfit does not fit perfectly, consider getting it altered.

Think about the weather, so that you can choose an outfit in a fabric of the correct weight. Avoid materials that crease easily as this will look unsightly on photographs. Outfits that include jackets can give the impression of two outfits once the jacket is removed. Whilst it is certainly true that outfits for mothers have become more fashionable recently, most still feel that an elegant and sophisticated look is appropriate.

Many mothers go shopping for their outfit with the bride; this can be an enjoyable occasion and ensure that choices meet with approval. It may also be wise to discuss outfits with the mother of your future daughter or son in law to avoid the embarrassment of wearing something similar.

Hats: One of the traditional ways for mothers to mark the importance of their child’s wedding is to wear a hat.

Suggestions to aid your selection include: a) Always take your outfit when going to the hat shop or milliner, to ensure that the overall image looks stunning. b) Tall ladies can wear almost any style, including statement pieces. c) An upturned brim is a flattering shape for shorter ladies as this will elongate the figure, d) If wearing a fascinator, wash your hair the day before and do not use conditioner. This will make the hair less silky and improve the grip of the fascinator.

Other accessories such as shoes, handbags and jewellery should also be chosen carefully. You may want to choose your shoes and bag in co-ordinating colours rather than the exact shade of your outfit, to break up the effect. You should also decide how you will place a corsage on your outfit, or whether it may be preferable to opt for flowers on your handbag or wrist.

Disability charity Leonard Cheshire Disability values all its volunteers,

who bring lots of fun and laughter to the lives of residents at Holme Lodge.

Julia Carter, Volunteer Coordinator at Holme Lodge says, ‘Volunteering doesn’t just enrich the lives of others, but it can bring untold benefits to the volunteer and can provide a route to employment; in fact that’s how I secured this wonderful position. Volunteering helped me grow in confidence and gain experience at my own pace without the pressure of being paid to perform. Volunteering helps people to focus on something outside of their own lives, meeting and socialising with other volunteers, and bringing so much into the lives of those you are helping whilst gaining an insight into a potential career, and gaining new skills.

Everything the volunteers do here is appreciated, by staff and residents alike,

and it doesn’t have to be big! Paul has been volunteering with us for 2 years and states, ‘I personally get a lot of satisfaction from volunteering…it’s surprising how little things make a big difference to the (service) users. It’s a great feeling…well worth it.’

We have a number of opportunities at Holme Lodge and offer free role specific training. I welcome anyone with an interest to come along and meet me for an informal chat to find out more. Whether you are hoping to gain skills and confidence, or are the creative type who can bring music, art or gardening skills our way, we can promise you will have a great time, meet some fantastic people and regret only that you didn’t do this sooner.’

In the first of a 2 part series, Victoria Watts, an osteopath from the Riverside Natural Health Centre explains about Disc problems and what we can do

about them.

Many people who experience lower back pain will Google their symptoms and immediately think that a disc has ‘popped out’ or they have a ‘trapped nerve’.

Firstly I want to explain why and how discs pop out and clarify the fact that they do not pop back in!

Our SpineOur spinal column is made up of vertebrae and intervertebral discs surrounded by ligaments. (See diagram 1) At the side of the vertebra we have nerve roots, which then go off to supply muscles in the arms and legs.

Our discs play a vital role in shock absorbency in the spine and provide strength to the spinal column; they are made up of a gel like substance, which is formed in rings. As we get older the discs loose some of their water content and become more brittle making them prone

to damage when we lift heavy objects and twist.

How disc injuries occurIf you experience back pain, which comes on immediately after lifting a heavy object or twisting awkwardly it may indicate that you have damaged your disc. The most

common symptom is a sharp shooting pain in the lower back causing radiating pain into the buttock and down the back of the leg commonly known as sciatica.

You may also experience a tingling or numbness in the leg or foot. This is because there is something pressing on the nerve root and starving it of its blood supply.

You should seek professional advice immediately if you are experiencing back pain of this severity. An osteopath will be able to perform tests which will indicate whether you have damaged your disc or not and design a suitable treatment plan.
