It also required the technical skills of engineers and the latest scientific knowledge on mining rock and soil condi- tions, and the physics of operating in high-pressure environments. Modern Machinery Breathes New Life Into Old Swing YarderModern Machinery took a $300,000 swing yarder

and converted it into a million-dollar machine.According to Russ Smith, territory manager, thiswas an incredible project for both Modern and forthe customer.

“Retrofit created a million-dollar machine asclose to new as possible,” Smith said. “Newcab, fittings, hoses, electrical and hydraulics. You cannot buy a new machine as most taketwo years to receive after an order is placed.Only a few companies in the world manufacturenew logging yarders.”

The rebuilt yarder has more electric andhydraulic components than the original had.The old framing was matched with a newundercarriage and mounting areas were fabri-cated for all the new hoses, electrical and thecab.

One of the biggest challenges was finding anindoor space to work on the machine. So,Modern built a brand-new facility to handle thisproject, as well as future projects, maintenanceand repairs.

Smith said there were so many custom-man-ufactured pieces that they now have insight intofuture rebuilds and repairs.

“The major facility that was created can beused for maintenance and repairs,” he said.“This was a once-in-a lifetime project.”

The rebuilt yarder sold as soon as it was fin-ished and should last about 10 years, with nor-mal wear and tear, according to Smith. Theproud, new owner is Jon Greenup Logging,Estacada, Ore.

Modern Machinery sells and rents heavyequipment to the construction, mining andforestry industries. The business began in 1944with its Spokane, Wash., location and has

expanded into other areas of Washington, as well asMontana, Idaho, Oregon and Russia.

Tonghand Exit-Side Wrench Attachment Offers SafetyLaValley Industries’ Tonghand exit-side wrench attachment provides hor-

izontal directional drillers with a safer, more efficient way to torque up andbreak pipe joints, reamers and subs, according to the manufacturer.

The Tonghand hydraulic attachment’s rotation arms, gullwing design andintegral TongVise are controlled by a single operator inside the safety andcomfort of any 30- ton excavator. An in-cab display allows the operator tomonitor and adjust all functions of Tonghand operation, including the speci-fied torque value. The Tonghand works with pipe tool joints ranging in sizefrom 6.5 to 10 in. (16.5 to 25.4 cm).

The rotation arms allow the operator to thread and unthread drill pipe con-nections with precision. At the same time, the gullwing design makes it easyfor the operator to move the arms out of the way to make and break reamers.

The 120,000 ft.-lb. torque capability on its vise, and the precision pipe con-trol design, allow workers to remain safely away from drilling componentswhile breaking joints, loading and unloading drill string components, andpositioning drill rod throughout the job site.

The safety factor was a major element of the design process, according toJason LaValley, president of LaValley Industries and inventor of theTonghand.

“My goal in developing this new exit-side wrench was exactly the same asin developing our original pipe-handling product, the Deckhand,” he said. “Iwanted a better and safer way to get the job done. The Tonghand lets youmake, break and move pipe more safely and more efficiently.

“We designed it to be very versatile,” LaValley said. “It can work as a pipehandler for the precise placement of drill rod on rigs, racks or trucks. In fact, that flexibility, strength and precision have earned it the nickname ‘Rig on aStick.’”

Fecon Depth Control Rotor Availablefor All Six Excavator Bull Hog Models

Fecon Inc.’s depth control rotor sys-tem (DCR) is now available on all sixexcavator Bull Hog models. Thisbrings a new level of performance andvalue to mulching, controlling thedepth of bite and efficiently directingmaterial flow so that energy is reservedfor production. DCR cuts faster, deliv-ering better fuel economy and moreuniform particle size. The DCR sys-tem is an evolution that builds onFecon’s reversible samurai knife tool,

according to the manufacturer. Depth control rings of the DCR sys-

tem work in harmony with the samuraiknife to enable more cutting with lesshp. The shape of the samurai knifeedge efficiently slices as it chips, pro-viding greater forgiveness on rock thanstraight-edged tools or saw teeth.Depth control rings lend further impactprotection to the tool body, and reduceshock loading to the mechanical orhydraulic drive line.

Caterpillar Announces NewFlow C Series Mulching HeadsTwo new mulching heads now available

on Cat Mulchers provide increased versatili-ty and performance in various land manage-ment applications. The standard and highflow C Series mulching heads are designedfor cutting and mulching of vegetation, saplings and undergrowth from overgrownagricultural areas and forested terrain.

Standard Flow C Series Mulching Heads (HM115)

The standard flow mulching head isdesigned for the customer who operates amulcher in applications such as maintainingfire lanes, brush clearing and general landmaintenance. The new adjustable multi-tooths pushbar is designed to help redirecttree placement when laying them on theground. The intergraded max pro gauge features a

color range that allows the operator to knowhow effective the work tool is running. Forexample, if the gauge is in the yellow range, that indicates the machine can do more; ifthe gauge is in red then the machine is push-

ing the tool too hard and will stall. The colorcoding enables the operator be more profi-cient with the tool saving fuel and time. The hydraulically operated front door

designed to recirculate material for a finerfinished product is standard with all Catmulchers.

High Flow C Series Mulching Head (HM418C)

The new high flow series provides manyof the same features as the standard seriesbut is now 72 in. (183 cm) wide, which islarger than the machine track width allowingfor greater clearing of track paths for levelsurfaces maneuvering. Work Progresses on Lake Mead’s Intake Tunnel No. 3 expected lifespan of more than 100years.The Las Vegas Review Journal

recently reported that crews initiat-ed the first part of the lid removalprocess, which required a secondwatertight lid to be lowered overthe mouth of one of the existingintakes, to supply water to the sur-rounding area. The water, in thesealed connector tunnel, wasdrained via valves in the temporarybulkhead and directed into the newintake tunnel. The bulkhead prevents water in

the connector tunnel from seepinginto the intake during construction. In order to remove the bulkhead, the tunnel has to be sealed off fromthe lake and drained so that crewsfrom VTC, the contractor, couldstart on the inside work. When thebulkhead was removed, the SNWAlet in another 30 million gal. at acontrolled rate to fill the rest of thetunnel. The project started in 2008.

Some of the key elements are: itopens at elevation 860 ft. (262 m)below sea level, has a 3-mi. longtunnel that draws and conveyswater from a deeper location inLake Mead, and has a connectingtunnel from the new intake to theexisting intake pumping stations. The tunnel has a finished diame-

ter of 20 ft. (6 m) and a gasketedconcrete segmental lining thatforms a ring — six segments per-ring, with 2,429 rings in total. Theintake structure and riser aresecured to the bottom of LakeMead by a large concrete mass. In addition, significant modifica-

tions to the existing intake systemto accommodate interconnectionwith the new third intake wereundertaken, including emergencyconnections made to tie in SNWAPumping Station No. 1 to the newIntake No. 3 system, providingadditional operating range for theexisting pumping station and pro-viding greater flexibility in operat-ing the system. This project is necessary to

ensure water for the greater LasVegas area. “An ongoing, severe drought in

the Colorado River Basin — and itsimpact on Lake Mead’s water level— are key factors defining the pur-pose and need for the SNWA’sLake Mead Intake No. 3,” saidBronson L. Mack of SNWA publicoutreach and media relations.“Lake Mead is responsible for 90

percent of the Las Vegas Valley’sdrinking water supply, and the lakeis currently at less than 40 percentof its storage capacity, evident by a130-foot-high ‘bathtub ring’ visiblearound the lake. “The declining lake levels raised

enough concern about the futureoperability of one of the existingtwo intakes,” he said, “promptingthe SNWA Board of Directors in2005 to approve design and con-struction of a third intake into LakeMead. The new intake’s primaryobjective is to maintain southernNevada’s access to its primarywater supply. Additionally, in 2015,the board approved the SNWA tobegin developing a low-lake-levelpumping station that will furtherensure that southern Nevada candraw upon its Colorado Riverwater supply, even if Lake Mead’slevels drop too low for water to bereleased to downstream users inArizona and California.” The total project cost covers con-

struction, engineering, constructionmanagement and materials. Theengineering firm involved in theproject, brought in by the J-V, wasARUP, which subcontractedBrierley Associates. SNWA andParsons Corporation are handlingconstruction management.“We did a concept-level design,

which was very preliminary and weset the criteria for them,” said ErikaMoonin, SNWA’s project manager,“and they took it from there — itwas their team that developed thedesign. We looked at theArrowhead Tunnel project insouthern California, theBrightwater project near Seattle;and the Hallandsås Ridge Tunnel inSweden — a high pressure tunnelproject, not as high as what weencountered, but it was the highestpressure one in the world at thetime. We also looked at several oth-ers for similar conditions and howthey approached the work.”While not involved in the TBM

selection, the SNWA placed operat-ing requirements into the contract, including minimums and the abili-ty to operate at a maximum pres-sure of 17 Bar units — a metric unitof pressure exactly equal to 100000PA, which is nearly equal to theatmospheric pressure on Earth atsea level. Also included was theneed for backup equipment. The SNWA took about 52 geo-

logical core samples during the pre-design phase in looking at thealignment section and when the J-

V arrived, it took additional coresamples.“We knew that it was highly

faulted and that we were going tohave some very difficult condi-tions,” said Moonin. “We ran into alarge fault — inactive. We knew thearea was faulted — we just didn’tunderstand the situation at thatpoint when we put the contracttogether how complicated it wasand the magnitude of it until weencountered it.”The project was followed by

several organizations, including theCalifornia Water Fix Team; a groupfrom Hawaii which had startedconstruction on a tunnel; and theNew York Department ofEnvironmental Protection, which isplanning to build a tunnel under-neath the Hudson River to providewater and is anticipating some highwater pressure, potentially higherthan the conditions encountered inNevada.“We’re trying to accommodate

one another as owners, because thatis how we learned and put things inour contracts,” sais Moonin. “If wehave something to share that canbenefit others, we’re willing to dothat. We’re also asked about ourdelivery method — how we puttogether the procurement for thedesign-build and the constructionmanager-at-risk contracts, an alter-native delivery method.” Moonin and her team held regu-

lar progress meetings with the con-tractor to discuss various issues, which was essentially a daily dia-logue to ensure that problems wererapidly resolved and potential prob-lems were addressed early on.“It’s probably the reason why we

were successful with the project,”she said. “We had commitmentswith upper management from thevery beginning. We wanted to haveopen communications and developa true working partnership.”This attitude was crucial when

trouble arose with the setting up ofthe starter tunnel that needed to becreated by traditional drill and blastmethods — it had to be createdbefore the TBM could be assem-bled.“When they encountered that

large complicated fault zone, thematerial flowed into the workspaceand it flooded the TBM assemblychamber and the starter tunnel,” she

said. “We had to work together toovercome it and a lot of expertswere brought in to develop plans togo back in there and start tunnelingagain. We had two subsequentinflows on that same alignment. This challenge brought us alltogether and it was the contractorwho proposed we re-align it as theground was difficult to get through— they felt the re-alignment wouldbe faster and less costly than theoriginal one.”It was at this point that the

SNWA and J-V made an agreementto quickly wrap up everything intoone change order and share the riskgoing forward.“We asked the contractor to take

on some risk that they don’t nor-mally do,” said Moonin, “and viathe change order we paid for thework on the original starter tunneland paid for the work going for-ward. It really worked out. We had-n’t made any payments to the con-tractor for the tunnel recovery workand we had an insurance claim, soit was a very complicated situation.Everyone realized that for the sakeof the project that we had to moveforward and resolve this majorchallenge quickly.”The cap removal operation went

smoothly, but it required a massiveamount of coordination as theSNWA had to shut down two majorpumping stations and two intakes.“This was done one at a time,”

said Moonin, “which ultimatelymeant the shut down of a watertreatment plant and the pumpingstations. All the parties werepleased with bringing the intakeon-line.”Vegas Tunnel Contractors crews

began drilling the access shaft forthe TBM in 2008 and between2008 and the end of 2011, success-fully excavated the access shaft, starter tunnel, TBM assemblychamber, and a tail tunnel.“There were contractual delays,

of which there was a time extensionfor the grouting in the shaft,” saidJim Nickerson, the J-V’s projectmanager, who has been with theproject since 2009, “then here wasthe contractual delay of the originalstarter tunnel, which delayed theproject for about a year. The entireproject is headed to finishing earlywith the entire contractual condi-tions.”Only one TBM manufacturer

expressed an interest in the project— Herrenknecht AG and the

When Lewis Griffith comes intowork, he sees first-hand the resultsof his previous job with the city ofTacoma. Griffith is assistant division

manager, responsible for onsiteoperations at the new transfer sta-tion operated by the city’s SolidWaste Utility. Before moving intothis position, as a member ofTacoma’s engineering department,he was on the design team thatdeveloped this award-winningfacility.Part of the 190-acre Tacoma

Recovery and Transfer Center, thenew 83,000-sq.-ft. (7,710 sq m)transfer station, opened in 2011.Handling 165,000 tons (149 t) ofgarbage per year, the stationachieves a vision of maximumflexibility, able to adapt to variablewaste streams and traffic demands. The ultimate aim was to increasethe volume of material divertedfrom the landfill into various recy-cling streams. The city had set its sights on

earning LEEDS certification, andwas awarded LEEDS Gold stand-ing for its efforts. SWANA (SolidWaste Association of NorthAmerica) recognized the city’seffort with its Award of Excellencefor 2013.

Purpose-Built DesignGriffith became manager of the

facility in 2014 and saw the opera-tion take another big step towardits goal: the commissioning of anew Sennebogen 821 R-HD mate-rial handler.Griffith explained, “We

designed the facility with a materi-al handler in mind. We gave it alarge open floor to provide moreroom for sorting and recoveryfrom the waste stream. The visionwas to select loads that would havemore of that type of recoverablematerial to be dumped on the floor

here.”Most of the material delivered to

the transfer station is handled bywheel loaders, which push loadsinto the compactors for disposal inthe landfill. The Sennebogenmachine is used to sort recyclablematerial and to pick out oversizeitems that are too large for the com-pactors.

Ideal for Sorting Waste Streams

Mike Chapin is one of the divi-sion’s heavy equipment operatorswho received training fromSennebogen to run the 58,000 lb.(26,308 kg) machine. After two-days of orientation on the newequipment, Chapin has been oper-ating the 821 60 percent of the daythrough his 10-hour shifts. Basedon his 18 years at the controls ofheavy equipment, he is pleased

with the city’s choice for this appli-cation.The grapple allows Chapin to

pick through mixed loads of wood, metal and cardboards from com-mercial and consumer waste mate-rial. “We also have a top-load bay

with a trailer parked below the tip-ping floor level to receive oversizeitems,” he said. “The Sennebogenis ideal for picking up those itemsand lowering them down into thetrailer — a 13 ft. drop — withoutdamaging the walking floor. Withthe Sennebogen, you can actuallymaneuver things around and setthem in there gently. We get bro-ken or rotten telephone poles, which we load into a trailer parkedright on the tipping floor. Due tothe hydraulic elevating cab, I’m uphigh enough to see right down intothe semi-trailer, and I can articulate

the logs any way I need to, to makea good load.”

Flexibility and SafetyChapin appreciates the safety

aspects of the 821’s design, as well. The machine’s square footprintgives it inherent stability, withoutrequiring outriggers, to lift andmove equal loads through 360degrees of swing. He alsoacknowledges the two safety cam-eras (1x rear, 1x right side) provid-ed as standard equipment onSennebogen machines. “They are a big help,” he said.

“There’s a fair bit of traffic and thearea I’m working in is for the gen-eral public. We get anything fromcars to pick-up trucks to dumptrailers unloading garbage and con-struction debris here.”Working under-roof, Chapin

recalls some early concerns about

potential damage to overhead elec-trical and sprinkler lines. Thesewere resolved with the installationof limit switches that keep theheight and reach of the 821’s boomwithin safe limits. Chapin canoverride the switches, if needed, tocomplete a specific maneuver.

Improving Capture ofRecyclable Waste

Since the 821 arrived at thetransfer station, Griffith and histeam have continued to refine itsrecycling processes. Aided by the821, the volume of material cap-tured for recycling from the wastestream handled in the transfer sta-tion has doubled over the past 18months.Lewis Griffith believes the city

is on the right track. “There are so many varieties in

the waste stream now; they havedifferent characteristics and wenow have opportunities to treatthem differently,” he said. “Wedidn’t know exactly how the mate-rial would move through the build-ing, so we built for flexibility: a flatfloor; no limiting walls or elevatedareas; and multiple routes throughdifferent doors that let us changetraffic lanes from weekdays toweekends.”As the facility evolves, its use of

the Sennebogen 821 will evolve, too. “We’re looking for ways to have

the material handler do the bulksorting and then do some handsorting or put the material on theconveyor for some kind of furtherprocess. That’s kind of in thefuture,” Griffith concluded. For more information call

Sturtevant Unveils 100 Percent Mobile Air Classifying Plant

Many aggregate and sand producers own multiple quar-ries, and a portable air classifier eliminates the cost of own-ing and maintaining multiple stationary classifiers. And formajor paving projects it is often more economical to movethe air classifier to a quarry nearer to the job site or to the jobsite itself than to haul the de-dusted manufactured sand. “Many asphalt companies also own or lease portable

asphalt plants that normally require adjoining portableequipment for crushing, screening and fines handling,”according to Joe Muscolino, senior project manager ofSturtevant Inc., Hanover, Mass. “A portable air classifier negates the need for a wash plant

where water is not readily available or where waste waterdisposal is a problem. But there has not been a mobile airclassifier that could go from transport to production withoutthe cost and delay of special lifting equipment. People havebeen asking us for years to design a portable plant to solvethis serious problem, he said.Sturtevant Inc. has introduced a self-contained, 100 per-

cent mobile air classifying plant with integral collapsibleconveyors, enabling parking to processing in one hour orless. The Whirlwind air classifier and conveyors hydrauli-cally unfold for setup and fold away for breakdown andtransport, with no cranes, boom trucks, front-end loaders orspecial crew needed for any part of the operation. Simplypush a button. Dual hydraulic cylinders provide smooth, steady raising and lowering of the Whirlwind air classifierand the integral, collapsible feed and dual discharge convey-ors. The plant is mounted on a rugged chassis frame with tri-

axle suspension for stable travel on highways or back roads. The plant is designed and constructed for vibration-freeoperation and long service life with low maintenance and thecompact design features a low transport height (13 ft. 5 in. [4m]), short trailer transport length (61 ft. 9 in. [18.8 m]) andtrim transport width (12 ft. 7 in. [3.8 m]) for easy maneuver-ing on roadways and at job sites. Feed capacity is 30 to 90tons (27 to 81.6 t) per hour with a 50 hp variable-frequencymotor for low energy consumption. “Producers tell us they want a portable unit large enough

for high feed rates, but compact and completely mobile tokeep transportation costs reasonable,” Muscolino said. “We

estimate that our ample tph range and compact, totally self-contained design will keep transportation costs 40 to 50 per-cent lower than if we had designed a larger plant with unat-tached conveyors that require assembly.” Other features requested by aggregate and asphalt pro-

ducers include a long, high discharge conveyor for greaterstockpile heights of de-dusted manufactured sand, and a feed

conveyor intake hopper that is low to the ground and can befed by a front-end loader, eliminating the need for an inter-mediate conveyor. Also, the feed hopper is located behindthe trailer rear wheels to prevent spillage of feed materialonto the chassis where it could cause damage and requireclean-up. The smaller side conveyor is for byproduct fines. For safety and nuisance dust control, all three belt con-

veyors are covered and can be easily vented. In addition, thegravity feed inlet at the top of the classifier is under a slightvacuum to prevent airborne nuisance dust during materialtransfer. The conveyor covers also help reduce moisture dur-ing rain to ensure efficient performance. The air classifier isdesigned for dry operation; material moisture preferablyshould not exceed 2 to 3 percent, with 4 to 5 percent as max-imum for most materials. The Sturtevant Whirlwind air classifier can eliminate the

need for screening, cyclones, bag houses or wet washing. The unit has an automatic lubrication system for low main-tenance and a time-tested gear unit drive for long service life. An internal fan lifts minus #200 mesh fines out of the

feed, and removable selector blades within the housing con-trol the amount of fines to be removed so the process can beadjusted to nearly any material or spec requirement. Anyadditional fine tuning and quick adjustments are made witheasy-to-use speed controls. Adjusted product fineness: mini-mal minus 100, 200, 325 mesh fines.Sturtevant has designed and manufactured a wide range of

material processing equipment since 1888, including threetypes of air classifiers. The chassis-mounted Whirlwind airclassifier is the exact same model that has been in stationaryapplications worldwide for more than 80 years. The compa-ny has manufactured more than 5,000 air classifiers, andwith proper maintenance, Sturtevant air classifiers can last40 to 50 years, according to the manufacturer.“Our customers expect superior quality and long service

life from everything we make,” Muscolino said. “And ourWhirlwind portable air classifier plant and rugged trailer arethoroughly designed and built for the long haul.”For more information, call 800/992-0209 or visit

Metso Designs New HP5 Cone Crusher for EfficiencyMetso designed the new HP5 cone crush-

er with safety, simplicity and eco-efficiencyin mind. Automatic settings, specializedmaintenance tools, reduced emissions andenergy-efficient motors are just a few of theimprovements built into this new conecrusher, according to the manufacturer.

Highest PerformanceThe Nordberg HP5 follows the successful

HP3, HP4 and HP6 as the fourth model in anall-new range of high-performance conecrushers. The design of Nordberg HP5 lever-ages Metso’s 100 plus years of crusherknow-how and experience with more than9,000 HP cone crushers in operation world-wide. The result is a crusher that delivers acombination of crushing action, feed size, performance and a low cost per ton. The HP5 has a 5 percent larger feed size

versus the HP400 and higher capacity thanthe HP500 in tertiary applications. In addi-tion, a higher cavity density improves inter-particle crushing action for end productswith more consistent gradation and superiorshape.

Less Downtime, Easy and Safe to Maintain

An advanced fastening system for themantle and bowl liner eliminates the needfor backing material, and makes liner

changes safer and faster. Thicker linersresult in more material to wear. The HP5

cone crusher also is easy to disassemble, and all components are accessible from thetop or side. The bowl and head are easilyand safely removed with no interference.A new motor support allows the belts to

be stretched hydraulically, and lifting pointshave been redesigned to easily and safelylift the HP5. Platform guards help to ensureoperator safety and protection.

IC70C Crusher AutomationEnsures Optimal PerformanceThe HP5 features Metso’s IC70C crush-

er automation system. The IC70C is pre-cisely designed to meet customer expecta-tions and crushing plant requirements forconsistent production, safety and easy con-trol of crusher parameters, according to themanufacturer. Feed and discharge conveyors control,

wear compensation, auto setting adjust-ment and computer remote control are justa few of the many benefits the IC70C sys-tem offers. For more information, visit

and can be changed in a matter ofminutes. The machine has a heavy duty

variable speed vibrating grizzlyfeeder (VGF) with integrated pre-screen, providing an aggressiveaction to separate fines materialefficiently. The variable speed

VGF ensures continuous chokefeeding of the crushing chamberfor optimal productivity. Materialfrom the pre-screen can be divert-ed to a stock pile via the on boardby-pass conveyor, or join thecrushed product on the main belt. The large 12.55 cu. yd. (9.6 cu

m) hopper has hydraulically fold-ing sides and a hydraulic self-lock-ing mechanism to provide effi-cient and faster machine set up andtear down times. “The J-1170AS with its

onboard sizing screen will enableoperators to produce a spec’dproduct without the need for a sec-ondary screen. The sizing screencan also be detached without theneed for additional lifting gearmeans that the machine can beused as ‘straight’ J-1170 jawcrusher, giving the operator versa-tility for applications that do notrequire sizing. When you combinethese factors with the excellentcrushing capabilities and the easewith which the machine can betransported ensures the demandsof owner operators and crushingcontractors are easily met,” saidNigel Irvine, sales and marketingdirector.

Unstable Ground Challenges Crewson Lake Mead’s Intake Constructionmachine was purchased in the spring of2008 and arrived on site in September2009. The TBM operations started atthe end of December 2011, and werecompleted on Dec. 10, 2014.“It was one of the most complicated

conditions that a TBM has ever operat-ed in because we had to mine up to 15Bar pressure,” said Nickerson, “whichis the first time it’s ever been done. Weencountered a lot of volcanic rock, basalts, and sedimentary rock. A lot of itwas fractured and broken, but the realproblem was the hydrostatic pressure ofthe lake above it that caused most of thegrief.“We had up to 15 Bar pressure and

when you have water with rock, itmakes for very unstable ground condi-tion,” he added. “We had water in theshaft, cavern and tail tunnels, but thosewere conventional excavations — drilland blast. After grouting, we had any-where between 800 to 1,000 GPM ofwater.”Nearly 360,000 cu. yds. (275,239 cu

m) of rock were brought to the surfaceand due to environmental permitrequirements, the material remained onsite and was used to create a view-shedberm, which when the lake level ishigh, prevents boaters and those in theLake Mead National Recreation Areafrom seeing the water treatment plant.“It could have been used elsewhere,”

said Nickerson, “but nothing was wast-ed.”The TBM drilled down to 600 ft.

(183 m) and then Nickerson had hiscrews create an underground cavernsystem. The width of the cavern is 30 ft.(9.1 m) and as it was expanded, equip-ment and vehicles were lowered down.Crews accessed the cavern via per-

sonnel hoists made by Alimak and bas-kets attached to Cimolai gantry cranes. To lower the equipment and vehicles, mine hoists were used.“All the oils and diesel had to be

drained and everything was turned ver-tically,” said Nickerson, “and every-thing went down a doorway, through aplatform opening on top of the shaft.”Some of the equipment brought

down for the drill and blast operationsincluded a large Tamriock Jumbo, a 5cu. yd. (3.8 cu m) rubber-tired minemucker, a 939 track loader, forklifts, and at one point, a concrete mixingtruck.Nickerson, with 32 years experience

in underground work, not only put hisknowledge to the test, but also his

team’s as they applied some cutting-edge techniques and brought in innova-tions via the TBM, such as mining inclosed mode up to 15 Bar.“The other aspect was connection

with the TBM and marine intake struc-ture that we had to perform — fabricat-ing and installing an intake structurethat weighed 1,200 tons,” he explained.“We had to blast a shaft in Lake Meadand then we had to set the 1,200 tonstructure within that excavation andthen we poured 12,000 cubic yards ofconcrete around that intake structure. After that was done, we mined ourTBM into it and completed the connec-tion to the inlet to the lake. We did all ofthat work without divers, using remote-operated vehicles.”In fact, the J-V had a small fleet of

barges, tugboats, and crew boats madeto specifications of the project, as wellas the remote operated submersibles. There was plenty of room for tempo-

rary field offices, materials storage andequipment and vehicles. The job sitewas accessed via park road that wasbolstered by building a paved road thathas been given to the park. The work went on 24 hours a day,

nearly 365 days a year via three shifts— day, swing and graveyard.“Our safety record was very good

and we ended up with about a 4.0recordable incident rate — standard inour industry, and a lost time incidentrate of .89,” said Nickerson. “We nailedit and the water for the whole region iscoming from the tunnel we built. Wealready had a history of being able towork on a slurry/closed mode TBM joband we’re leaving with the experienceof mining in 15 Bar conditions.“At the height of the work we had

about 150 hourly employees for most ofthe critical path work, we were down to75 once the marine work was done andwe started to finish up the tunnel afterthe boring ended,” he added. “This hasbeen a very difficult and challengingjob. It was the dedication and persever-ance of all our people. There were timeswhen you wondered if you could buildit — to complete it.”J-V crews did most of the work.

Subcontractors included BMT for theriser section of intake structure,Precision Aggregate for the purchase ofthe trimming concrete. To provide air for the crews in the

cavern/underground work area, a forcedair ventilation system was set up, onethat was constantly monitored. Safetytraining also included how to avoid

being bitten by rattlesnakes and poison-ous spiders. The job site infringed onthe habitat of a species of endangereddesert tortoise and crews were instruct-ed on how to avoid incidents with them.Concrete was produced on site via a

Liebherr portable concrete plant.“We designed the concrete mix. It

took us 12 months to find the right for-mula,” said Nickerson.Other equipment used for the project

included excavators, dozers, backhoes, and dump trucks.“We had a lot of on site mechanics

for all of the equipment, whether it wasthe TBM or underground and surfaceequipment,” said Nickerson.“Maintenance on the TBM was donedaily. Herrenknecht AG provided a stafffor the commissioning of the TBM andthey had a person on site for about ayear. They also provided training for theoperators and the mechanics.”The daily progress of the TBM var-

ied between closed and open modeoperations.“On good days in closed mode we

did 50 feet and saw over 100 feet withopen mode,” said Nickerson. Moonin arranged for SNWA person-

nel to visit the site — aboveground andbelow, and the project experience hasyielded many lessons learned for futureinitiatives such as partnerships and riskmanagement approaches.“The alternative delivery method

worked for us. We used qualification-based selection of contractor teams andwe’re using it again for the new pump-ing station project,” she said. “We alsoknow a little bit more about the groundand sited the pumping station where webelieve there is less of a chance toencounter that large fault zone. Weknow that we will encounter somesmaller faults, but we’ve shared infor-mation with the contractor, Barnard Inc.It’s really about being open and trans-parent and making sure that everyoneunderstands the risks.“We also had some unique contract

provisions for different site conditionclaims and had allowance items,” sheadded. “We put those same provisionsin the new contract and we have sharedthat with other owners interested in howwe developed them.” The pumping station will be built

about 500 ft. (152.4 m) from the newintake tunnel.

Industry SpendingContinues Strong turing and offices experienced significant year-over-yeargrowth, most categories saw a decline in spending betweenAugust and September as firms struggled to replace retiringworkers amid growing labor market tightness. There wereonly 479,000 unemployed construction workers inSeptember, the smallest September total in 15 years,Simonson remarked, citing data from the Bureau of LaborStatistics.Eighty-six percent of firms responding to a recent associ-

ation survey reported they are having a hard time findingqualified workers to fill available positions, association offi-cials noted. As a result, many firms are likely struggling tofind enough staff to keep pace with the growing demand forconstruction services, prompting the slight drop in monthlyconstruction spending in the private nonresidential sector, the officials added.“Demand may be starting to outstrip the industry’s capac-

ity given the severe and growing shortages of available, qualified workers,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the associa-tion’s chief executive officer, who urged elected and appoint-ed officials to act on measures outlined in the association’sWorkforce Development Plan designed to make it easier toprepare, recruit and train new workers. For more information, visit www.agc.org.(This story also can be found on Construction Equipment

SECT IONTrucks & Trailers

Felling’s Main Custom Solutions Offer Safety, CapacityFelling Trailers’ capability and willing-

ness to take a project from concept to fin-ished product fills the need in the utilitiessector with the FT-20 IT-I trailer. The devel-opment of the specific options and configu-ration of this trailer evolved from a deal-er/manufacturer rela-tionship, where thedealer asked theFelling sales per-son to meet in per-son with them and theircustomer to come up with the desiredspecifications to meet their needs. The enduser customer’s concerns were operatorsafety, capacity, tongue weight, equipment

placement, rear overhang, etc. The resulting design was that of the FT-20

IT-I custom trailer. The unusual tongue con-figuration allows turning clearance for rearsteps or for a recessed mounted pintle on the

rear of a utility truck. The jack islocated so the operator has easy

access to operate and isbolted on so itcan be easilyreplaced in

the event ofdamage. The deck

length was increased to avoid rear over hang. Bolt on side steps and grab handles are

provided for safe access in most any condi-

tion. The entire trailer can be hot dipped galva-

nized to drastically extend the life andappearance. Standard Equipment:• Load Capacity: 20,000 lbs. (9,072 kg) • (2) 10,000 lb. (4,536 kg) axles (Dexter

Isuzu Introduces 2016 High-Capacity GVWR NPR DieselIsuzu Commercial Truck of America Inc.

introduced the 2016 NPR Diesel. The truckfeatures a 13,000-lb. (5,897 kg) GVWR anda 33.5-in. (85 cm) frame to offer more capa-bility than previously available in an entry-level Isuzu diesel truck — while still provid-ing legendary Isuzu durability and fuel econ-omy.“With a 13,000-lb. GVWR, the new NPR

Diesel approaches the capacity of a Class4 truck, but at a Class 3 price,” saidShaun Skinner, executive vice presi-dent and general manager of IsuzuCommercial Truck of America. “Thistruck is the latest example of howIsuzu is committed to lowering the costof truck ownership without sacrificingperformance, practicality, long-termreliability or fuel efficiency.”Among the notable features of the 2016

NPR Diesel:• Standard 30-gal. (113.5 L) rear-

mounted in-rail fuel tank• Frame width of 33.5 in. that will

accept bodies up to 102 in. (259 cm)wide and 91 in. (231 cm) high• Four wheelbases — 109, 132.5, 150,

and 176 in. (277, 336.5, 381 and 447 cm) —that will accept body lengths up to 20 ft. (6m)

The new NPR Diesel is powered by thenewest and most modern powerplant in theIsuzu family, the 3.0-L 4JJ1-TC tur-bocharged and intercooled diesel engine. The powerplant produces 150 hp and 282lb.-ft. of torque at 1,600 to 2,800 rpm.“With its peak torque available at low and

m i d - r a n g e

engine speeds, the 4J engine gives driversboth good off-the-line acceleration and pass-ing power,” Skinner said. That power doesn’t come at the expense

of durability. The engine has a B-10 dieselengine life rating of 310,000 mi. And inkeeping with Isuzu’s commitment to envi-

ronmental responsibility, the engine iscapable of running on B20biodiesel fuel.

The powerplant is mated toan Aisin A460 six-speed auto-matic transmission with doubleoverdrive, lock-up torque con-verter that operates in secondthrough sixth gears, and avail-able PTO.Together, the engine and

transmission help

the new NPR Diesel achieve class-leadingfuel economy, according to the manufactur-er.The 2016 NPR Diesel is backed with a

standard powertrain limited warranty thatcovers engine and drivetrain against defectsin material and workmanship for three years, unlimited mileage. The NPR Diesel also iswarranted against perforation from corro-sion for four years regardless of mileage.“Last year, Isuzu trucks celebrated their

30th anniversary in the North America mar-ket,” said Skinner. “This year, we enter thenext three decades in America with a truckthat truly embodies everything that Isuzu isall about — low cost of acquisition, class-above capability, tremendous fuel efficiency, proven reliability and the ultimate in lowcost of ownership. We couldn’t be prouderthan we are of the new NPR Diesel.”

Production of the 2016 NPR Dieselwill begin in Japan in November 2015,and the truck will be available at Isuzu’snetwork of nearly 300 dealers in NorthAmerica shortly thereafter. For more information, call 866/441-
