ixed mort-gage rates across the United States are lower

than at this time last year. The average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage dropped to 4.14% from 4.17% last week, according to the latest survey from mortgage buyer Freddie Mac. At this time last year, the average was 4.46%. “Mortgage rates were down following the release of first quarter real GDP final estimate, which fell at a 2.9 percent annualized rate, a steeper than expected decline and the worst reading since the first quarter of 2009,” Frank Nothaft, vice presi-dent and chief economist at Freddie Mac, said in a statement. “Also, the seasonally-adjusted S&P/Case-Shiller 20-city home price index [PDF] was up only 0.2 percent in April from the previous month. On a year-over-year basis, prices remained strong in April up 10.8 percent, but slower than the 12.3 percent in March.”

The average rate on a 15-year fixed mortgage also registered a drop, to 3.22% from 3.30% last week. A year ago, it aver-aged 3.50%, according to Freddie Mac. Averages for the two most popular hybrid adjustable-rate mortgages were also down. At 2.98%, the five-year ARM dipped slightly from 3.00% last week. The one-year

ARM trended down slightly, to 2.40% from 2.41% a week ago. After hitting record lows about a year ago, mortgage rates had been on the rise since Fed remarks spurred market specula-tion it could begin curbing its bond pur-chases. Last year at this time, rates spiked above 4%. •

The Florida Chamber of Commerce Names Speaker Will Weatherford as 2014 Most Valuable Legislator

he Florida Chamber of Commerce announced House Speaker Will Weatherford as their 2014 Most Valuable Legislator (MVL) and honored 40 mem-bers of the Florida Legislature with Distinguished Advocates awards. The announcement and presen-

tation of the MVL was made during the Florida Chamber’s Board of Directors meeting taking place in Miami. The Florida Chamber presents these special awards to legisla-tors who fought for pro-jobs initiatives during the 2014 session that

help make Florida’s businesses more competitive and create more economic opportuni-ties for Florida’s families. The Florida Chamber also released its annual publication How They Voted – which provides the grades for all 160 legislators so business leaders can see who voted for or against job creation and economic growth.

The business community’s premier legislative award, Most Valuable Legislator, goes to House Speaker Will Weather-ford for his courage to champion difficult, but necessary issues

like lawsuit abuse reform, pension reform and educational oppor-tunities for every student, and the character to consistently place the long-term advancement of Florida before short-term politics. Speaker Weatherford’s maturity and leadership skills were dis-played by his ability to provide bi-partisan and bicameral solutions to Florida’s biggest issues. “Early during the 2014 legislative process, the Florida Chamber encouraged lawmakers to build on efforts to transition Florida to an innovation-based economy by putting the long-term health of Florida ahead of short-term politics,” said Mark Wilson, Presi-dent and CEO of the Florida Chamber of Commerce. “The Florida Chamber is pleased to present the Most Valuable Legislator award and Distinguished Advocate award to lawmakers who have the courage to put free enterprise principles for job creation above special interests.” •

FASHION TIPSMaridy’s

Fashion

Let’s start with how the right bag can make you feel well put together... no matter what you choose to wear with it! There are a rainbow of colors that take my breath away! There are bag of so many different styles, shapes, tissues and of course col-ors. If you are going to splurge one time you should most definitely keep your choice of color pretty basic; maybe a tan or black so it goes with almost anything and will always be in style depending on the shape of the bag. With all the great bags out there, it’s hard to narrow it down, but I’m going to try.

Beware these might be a bit shocking!

My FAvs, (probably in the higher price range):

The Chanel quilted caviar leather classic jumbo flap bag, $2,700.

Louis Vuitton Monogram Empreinte Artsy bag, $2,995.

Is that bag a good luck charm? The right bag makes you feel you look perfect - morning, noon or night!

Gucci Soho medium tote calfskin in silver.

All TIMe FAv:Hermes Swift Birkin, $11,500. WOWZERS! I have yet to be able to afford, but one can always dream!

Other great bags: There are always the bags that look just as great but cost a lot less. Stella McCartney bags are very popular. The Falabella tote is a great one.

I love the MICHAEL Kors medium Fallon messenger - it comes in a few different colors. Price is right at $275.

Tory Burch handbags are always “in” and can be in the lower price range if you find one on sale. She makes a ton of dif-ferent shapes, sizes and colors. The Thea chain shoulder slouchy tote is priced at $495.

The Crossbody-mini Avery tote by Rebecca Minkoff is around $295.

Last but certainly not least would be the Coach ‘Madison hobo’ that comes in six different colors. My choice of color for this beauty would be the light gold/silt.

I see bags everywhere from TJ Maxx to Target. It’s not the cost of the bag, but what kind of bag fits your everyday look and style? It’s important to be educated and be aware. Math, Science and English are all important, but knowing what you are wearing and how you are wearing it is just as relevant. Fashion is commonality. Style is individuality. Think about it. Memorize it. Love it. Live it. Good luck and happy shopping!

When contemporary painter Patrick Stone is hired to forge it, he finds himself squaring off, across the years, with Van Gogh himself. The result is a compelling mystery about the obsession to create and the fine line that separates truth from myth. Intended for mature audiences.

also...embrace Your Geekness Day

July 13th Embrace Your Geekness Day is a great day to be a Geek.

Or, to know a Geek.A geek is an individual who is highly intelligent (brainy) and

technically oriented. They are most often associated with the computer, and computer systems world. A geek is usually formal, studious and into his technical world, often to the exclusion of all else. A geek is closely related to a "Nerd".

A nerd however, may or may not possess technical expertise. Some people view the term "Geek" with a negative

connotation. Are they jealous of your knowledge and skills, perhaps? We certainly think so.

Enjoy Embrace Your Geekness Day to the fullest. Spend plenty of time with your computer. Talk computer lingo and jargon. If you are a geek, stand tall and proud. Isn't it great to be so

brilliant and gifted!?

Different colored eyes DayJuly 12th

Different Colored Eyes Day has two reasons to celebrate. First of all, it celebrates diversity of eye color. Wouldn't the world be

boring, if everyone had the same color of eyes?Secondly, it recognizes an eye condition called Heterochro-mia. People who have this trait, have two different colors of

eyes. One eye may be brown, while the other is blue. Famous people who have Heterochromia include David Bowie, Jane

Seymour, and Christopher Walken.Your eyes are an important part of your appearance.

They are also important in communications. When you look into your lover's eyes, you need to like what you see.

Making "eye contact" just wouldn't be the same without different colored eye. Isn't it great that we have a variety of eye

colors to set us apart from one another?Celebrate Different Colored Eyes Day by taking particular

notice of the eye colors of everyone you see. •

What to PlantBedding Plants: Summer annuals to plant now include celosia, coleus, torenia and ornamental pepper.Bulbs: Butterfly lily and gladiolus are bulbs that can be planted during the middle of summer.herbs: While summer is too hot to start herbs from seeds, many will do well if started from small plants.Palms: Continue planting palms while the rainy season is in full swing. Support large palms with braces for 6-8 months after planting. Nails should not be driven directly into a palm trunk.

What to DoTrees: Prepare for hurricane season by checking trees for damaged or weak branches and prune if needed. Hire an ISA certified arborist.Lawns: Determine the cause of any lawn problems before taking action. If an insect is the culprit, treat only the affected area. Rule out disease or sprinkler malfunction.Solarize the vegetable garden: Use summer heat as a tool in preparing the vegetable garden for fall planting. It takes 4-6 weeks to kill weeds, disease and nematodes, so start now.azaleas: Prune no later than mid-July to protect developing buds for next spring’s bloom.Irrigation: An inexpensive rain shut off device can save money by overriding an irrigation system when it rains. If one is already installed, check that it is operating properly.Pests on ornamental Plants: Small white dots on the leaves of azaleas and other ornamental plants may indicate lacebugs at work. Spray forcefully with water to help control this pest.citrus: Check citrus trees for damage to fruit or leaves and take action to minimize the effect of insects and/or disease on developing fruit or the overall health of the tree. •

THINK BIG!

Deviled EggsDeviled eggs are a perennial potluck favorite. Our recipe replaces some of the egg yolks with nonfat cottagecheese—keeping the filling velvety and rich while re-ducing some of the fat. No one will know the difference.24 servings | Active Time: 20 minutes | Total Time: 20 minutes.

Ingredients12 large hard-boiled eggs (see Tip), peeled1/3 cup nonfat cottage cheese1/4 cup low-fat mayonnaise3 tablespoons minced fresh chives or scallion greens1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish2 teaspoons yellow mustard1/8 teaspoon saltPaprika for garnish

Preparation1. Halve eggs lengthwise with a sharp knife. Gently remove the yolks. Place 16 yolk halves in a food processor (discard the remaining 8 yolk halves). Add cottage cheese, mayonnaise, chives (or scallion greens), relish, mustard and salt; process until smooth.2. Spoon about 2 teaspoons yolk mixture into each egg white half. Sprinkle with paprika, if desired.

Tips & NotesMake Ahead Tip: Cover and refrigerate for up to 1 day.Tip: To hard-boil eggs: Place eggs in a single layer in a saucepan; cover with water. Bring to a simmer overmedium-high heat. Life is Beauty, admire it. Life is a Dream, realize it.

Life is a Challenge, meet it. Life is Duty, complete it. Life is a Game, play it.

Life is a Promise, fulfill it. Life is Sorrow, overcome it.

Life is a Song, sing it. Life is a Struggle, accept it. Life is a Tragedy, confront it. Life is an Adventure, dare it.

Life is Bliss, taste it. Life is Costly, care for it. Life is Wealth, keep it. Life is Love, enjoy it.

Life is Mystery, know it. Life is Luck, make it.

Life is too Precious, do not destroy it. Life is Life, fight for it.

An old man lived in a village. He was one of the most unfortunate people in the world. The whole village was tired of him, he was always

gloomy, constantly complained and was always in a bad mood. The longer he lived, the more vile he became and the more poisonous were his words. People avoided him, because his misfortune became contagious. It was even unnatural and insulting to be happy next to

him. He created the feeling of unhappiness in others.

But one day, when he got to be eighty years old, an incredible thing happened. Instantly everyone heard the rumor: “The Old Man is happy

today, he doesn’t complain about anything, smiles, and even his face has freshened up .” The whole village gathered together.

An the old man was asked: What happened to you ?

Nothing special - he answered. - For eighty years I’ve been chasing happiness, and it was useless. Then I decided to live without

happiness and just enjoy life. •
