When Steve Azzoli pulls his bright bluecar into an auto parts store and pops openhis hood, he invariably draws a crowd.

That’s because the retired Land O’ Lakesman is tooling around in an all-electric car,and people want to take a look.

Azzoli got the car for his project in 2011,and didn’t get the parts to convert it into anelectric vehicle until the middle of 2012.

It took six months to restore the car andanother 18 months to convert it.

Rebirth Auto of St. Petersburg helpedAzzoli get the right battery system andmotor controller, while Diamond AutoWorks Inc., in Lutz did the bodywork, weld-ing and fabrication work, and car painting.

Diamond Auto’s Bobby Boles said whenAzzoli first told him what he was planningto do, he thought he was crazy. But Boles fig-ured if Azzoli was willing to invest so muchin the electric car project, Azzoli must knowwhat he was talking about.

The bodywork made the car more aero-dynamic, Azzoli said.

Since completing the project, Azzoli hasdriven 5,700 miles without using a drop ofgas. He estimates he saves about $300 amonth with his electric car.

Beyond saving money on fuel, he’s alsospending less on maintenance.

The project cost about $23,000, butAzzoli said that is less than what it wouldcost for a Chevrolet Volt, a popular gas andelectric hybrid car. He also notes his car getsmore mileage per charge than a Nissan Leaf, another popular electric car.

Before a recent upgrade that reduced theweight of his car, Azzoli said he was gettingabout 200 miles a charge. Azzoli recently re-moved about 150 pounds of steel, andchanged his battery boxes from steel to alu-minum. Once he does some more testing,he’ll know how much the mileage betweencharges has improved.

Azzoli’s next project will be to changethe 14-inch tires to 16-inch tires, improvinghighway mileage, he said.

The Land O’ Lakes man isn’t the only onedrawn to electric vehicles. Jose Barriga ofNew Tampa said he became fascinated withthe notion of converting a gasoline-poweredcar into an electric vehicle once he foundout it was possible.

He has converted a 2004 Nissan Sentrainto an electric car. At first, he was able toget 50 miles per charge.

However, he’s in the midst of upgradingthe batteries and expects to be able to get80 miles per charge once that project isdone.

Barriga is sold on the concept of electriccars. He likes the idea of using a car thatdoesn’t use gasoline or oil, and which does-

n’t directly causepollution.

His second car is a hy-brid, which requires himto fill his gas tank abouttwice a month.

Barriga said he’d liketo do another car conver-sion project, but simplydoesn’t have the time.

Steve Messerschmidt, who’s associated withtwo vehicle companies inSt. Petersburg — RebirthAuto and Evnetics —sells electric vehicle con-version kits to customersaround the globe.

There’s a big demandto convert gasoline-pow-

ered cars into electric cars, Messerschmidtsaid.

Some people want to save money ongas. Others enjoy do-it-yourself projects.

Some people want to reduce the carbonfootprint. Some people like to show offtheir cars and they want to have a uniquevehicle.

Others want electric cars, but don’t wantto be limited to what’s available commer-cially. They want to choose the make andmodel of their electric car.

And there are those who want to make abusiness out of it, Messerschmidt said. “Theywant to do conversions for other people,”he added.

Edward R. Monfort, chief executive andpresident of electric driveshaft manufactur-er Adomani Inc., is one of those people. He’slooking to convert school buses and trucksinto electric vehicles to make money for hiscompany and to save money for school dis-tricts and private businesses.

The Tampa man said he’s also exploring

the possibility of working with the U.S.Postal Service to provide a fleet of vehiclesfor its use.

Monfort drives around a Ford F-150 truckthat’s been converted to an electric vehicle. His interest in electric vehicles began in2008 when he was getting into the car busi-ness and built an all-electric Mustang.

The car was popular at car shows, butnever developed a strong market, Monfortsaid.

Now, he’s focusing his efforts on findingcustomers in the fleet market for trucks andbuses.

Electric vehicles offer a wise economicchoice, Monfort said, noting they can costless than half as much as a gasoline-poweredvehicle over 10 years, considering the pur-chasing and operating costs.

“There’s a demand for the product,”Messerschmidt said. “Municipalities, as timegoes on, they’re going to demand that thecarbon footprint go down. This business, ingeneral, is really in its infancy.”

Interest sparks in electric car conversions

Edward Monfort stands near his Ford F-150 that has been con-verted to a battery-powered vehicle. He’s seeking businessopportunities to convert fleets of trucks and buses into electricvehicles to reduce operation and maintenance costs for privatecompanies and government agencies.

B.C. MANION/STAFF PHOTOSSteve Azzoli said his electric car creates a buzz when people take a look under its hood. Heinvested about $23,000 on the car, but gets 200 miles per battery charge, and doesn’t haveto spend a dime on gasoline.

Sarah Robison took a prize-winningphoto last fall when she was visiting a parkin Rochester, New York.

The 11-year-old was admiring someCanada geese when she noticed a youngdeer just a few feet away. The young shutter-bug knew that she had only an instant toreact, and she took advantage of that mo-ment. She took out her iPad and capturedthe shot.

The result was a prize-winning image inRanger Rick magazine’s “Your Best Shots”photo competition. As a winner, her photo-graph captured one of six spots in a photodisplay in the August issue of the children’smagazine, published by the National WildlifeFederation.

Other photos in the spread include aswamp scene in the Everglades, a polar beartaking a plunge at the Columbus Zoo inOhio, a hummingbird in a backyard gardenin California, some wild mushrooms in thewoods, and a giant mola fish off the coast ofNew Hampshire.

Robison is thrilled that her photo was se-lected.

“I love taking photos. That’s my hobby,”she said.

Her parents, Randy and Deborah of Lutz, are delighted by Sarah’s achievement, andcouldn’t be more proud. Her grandmother,Gloria Russell of Land O’ Lakes, said Sarah hasbeen interested in photography for years.

“Even when she was small, she used totake pictures with my camera,” Russell said.

She’s also had an interest in nature sinceshe was quite young, said Deborah Robison, who homeschools Sarah.

Sarah Robison recalls her mother readingher Ranger Rick stories when she was small. Now that she’s older, Robison thumbsthrough the magazine herself, learning facts

about animals.Robison loves animals and wants to be-

come a veterinarian when she grows up.She also plans to continue pursuing photog-raphy, which she intends to keep as a

lifetime hobby.Robison takes her iPad

wherever she goes, in caseshe sees a good photo op-portunity. The iPad has itslimitations because shecan’t zoom in and getclear shots.

That’s why capturingthe photo of the deer wasso special, she said.

“I really couldn’t be-lieve he was standingright there,” Robison said.

She kept thinking thedeer would run away. Buthe didn’t, she said.

The photo competi-tion is an ongoing contest, with winners selectedthree times a year fromhundreds of entries, saidMary Dalheim, editorial di-rector of children’spublications for thewildlife group. The judgesselect photos that fill theframe well and don’t havea cluttered background.

They also seek out im-ages that are interestingand use the proper lighting, she said.

“We’re also looking for aninteresting perspective,”Dalheim said. “If you look atthe picture of this deer, she’sgot him head-on. It’s sort ofas if she met eye-to-eye withthis deer. We were amused

by that.”The photo contest is intended to encour-

age children to get outdoors and to observenature.

“You know how some people say, ‘It

takes a village to raise a child?’” Dalheimsaid.

“At National Wildlife Federation we say, ‘Ittakes a backyard, or a playground or a park.’”

Being outdoors has many benefits,Dalheim said, noting studies show it helpschildren grow lean and strong, enhancestheir imagination and attention span, andimproves their classroom performance.

It also helps them to become betterstewards of the environment, Dalheim said.

Any child younger than 13 is eligible toenter the contest. For more information, visit tinyurl.com/RangerRickPhoto.

Ever thought of pizza as a fast food? A retired professional baseball player rais-

ing his family just south of Lutz is bringingsuch a concept to the Tampa Bay area begin-ning early next year. And it won’t be longbefore he has his eye on some potentialsites in Pasco County.

Matt LaPorta, a star prospect from theUniversity of Florida baseball team whowent on to play for the Cleveland Indians, has joined a group of investors to open 18Pie Five Pizza stores throughout the region— nearly doubling the number of locationsthe chain already has across the country.

The concept is to serve made-to-orderpizza … in less than five minutes.

“I was playing baseball down in Mexico, and I was talking to one of my business part-ners Josh Fields, who told me there was thispizza thing I needed to look at,” LaPorta said.“We flew out to Dallas, and met with every-one at Pie Five, and I was sold.”

LaPorta has only spent a few years inMajor League Baseball, and despite a littlebit of spring ball across the border, it lookslike past hip injuries have most likely endedhis career. Not even 30 yet, the former firstbaseman and left fielder is looking at life be-yond the diamond.

While retirement might mean more timewith his kids, and more regular trips toGrace Family Church in Lutz — where hisfather-in-law, Craig Altman, is the lead pastor— LaPorta was looking for something thatcould support his family for years to come, while also trying to make his mark in acrowded restaurant market.

The fast casual concept of Pie Five ismore akin to places like Pei Wei andChipotle, than it is to somewhere likeMcDonald’s or Wendy’s. The chain is an off-shoot of Pizza Inn Holdings, which operates

hundreds of Pizza Inn restaurants in thesouth, except in Florida. In fact, Pie Fivewould be the Texas company’s first forayinto the Sunshine State, opening its first lo-cation in Port Orange last year.

LaPorta is gambling quite a bit on the PieFive franchise taking off, despite the fact thebrand is just 3 years old. Many franchisingcompanies offer single store locations witha minimum investment. However, Pizza Inntook a lead from companies like Five GuysBurger and Fries which instead requiresfranchisees to buy entire markets, with acommitment to build a bunch of stores, notjust one or two.

“They want to do regions,” LaPorta saidof the company. “Instead of working with100 owners, they can instead work with just50.”

Fields, who introduced LaPorta to PieFive, is a former baseball player himself, cov-ering third base for teams like the Chicago

White Sox and Kansas City Royals. He’s alsoworking with former Baltimore Ravens tightend Billy Bajema to open Pie Five restau-rants in the Oklahoma City area.

The franchise area LaPorta boughtstretches from Sarasota to Pasco. Where astore might end up, however, is still on thedrawing board. The initial plan is to open inthe heart of Tampa’s metro area, and thenexpand out from there.

“We want Tampa to be the epicenter ofthis whole region,” LaPorta said.

The idea would be to find prime busi-ness plaza-style space in the area, possibly inplaces like Wesley Chapel or WiregrassRanch.

“That is a great area for us, it’s a boomingarea,” LaPorta said. “I go up that way quite abit, and I can definitely see the potential fora location there.”

How quickly a Pasco site happens de-pends on a number of factors, including

when the space and location they want be-comes available. LaPorta says he’s also beingcareful not to open too many locations atonce, as he feels the region will need sometime to be introduced to the concept.

Pie Five currently operates 21 locationsin six states, but has 200 more locationsunder contract in 13 states and Washington,D.C. Joining LaPorta and Fields are restau-rant operators Jeff Engle and BrandonBirdwell, the latter an Oklahoma business-man who has worked extensively withfranchising Firehouse Subs locations amongother pursuits.

Not here yet, but five-minute pizza could come soon

PHOTOS COURTESY OF PIE FIVE PIZZA CO.Just a few years old, Pie Five Pizza has just a couple dozen locations in six states. However, that’s expected to explode to more than 200 in the next couple years.

Matt LaPorta never had a chance to reallybuild his profile as a Major League Baseballplayer, with two serious hip injuries sidelin-ing his career before he even turned 30.

Who is the best A/C manufacturer?Surprising to many, the top 20 brands are made by just eight manufacturers. There is almost no difference inquality and performance between same-level units made by Carrier, Trane, Rheem, Lennox, Amana, Bryant or Goodman. It’s the installation team that assembles the unit at your home that makes the difference. Proper installation and maintenance are more important to the performance of an A/C system, than the unit itself.

POLL TACKLES SUPREME COURT BIASThe U.S. Supreme Court recently wrapped

its annual session, but a new poll by Saint LeoUniversity suggests some Americans are stillskeptical if the court truly uses the U.S.Constitution as a guide in making decisions.

A majority of those surveyed, 53 percent, believes the court is influenced by politicalconsiderations when it hears and decidescases, the university said. Only 30 percent saidthe court decides cases strictly on its interpre-tation of the Constitution.

The survey was based on 802 people whoidentified themselves as “likely voters,” and hada margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent. The participants were asked, “Which comesclosest to your view about how the UnitedStates Supreme Court hears and decidescases?”

Independent voters were adamant theSupreme Court is too political, with 63 percentsupporting that notion. More than 53 percentof Republicans believed that, but just 43 per-cent of Democrats. On the other side, 41percent of Democrats believed the SupremeCourt did rely on the Constitution, while only26 percent of Republicans and 22 percent ofindependents supported that notion.

Wesley Chapel High’s Academy ofAutomotive Technology has received afive-year certification for maintenanceand light repair from the NationalAutomotive Technicians EducationFoundation.

The certification provides a level ofcredibility because outside experts haveevaluated the program and determinedthat it has met is rigorous standards, saidShelley Carrino, an assistant principalwho oversees the automotive program.

With this certification, students can beconfident their training is current and ad-heres to high standards, Carrino said.Potential employers can be assured thatthe students are prepared to handle thedemands of the work.

Obtaining a certification requires atwo-day evaluation by a representative ofthe association. It includes checking outthe program’s facilities, resources, qualityof training programs, and equipment, andmeasures them against industry stan-dards.

Details are important, Carrino said. Forinstance, the evaluator looked throughthe school’s tool drawers to make surethere is enough equipment to supportthe program’s size. The evaluation also in-cluded checking out the technologythat’s available and safety issues.

Carrino and academy teacher Jeff

Corliss worked for months with BarbaraDonaghy, a supervisor in the district’s ca-reer and technical education division toprepare for the certification process.

“She put a lot of long hours and hardwork, in helping us,” Carrino said.Community partners also stepped in to help.

The program had to meet the stan-dards for 12 different categories, andthere were subcategories for each stan-dard, Carrino said.

“Besides the fact that it’s important forus to do it, it really became urgent for usto go through this process and get itdone as quickly as possible,” she said. “Wewere losing funding for our kids.”

The certification was necessary for theschool to qualify for state funding for theclasses offered through the automotiveacademy.

When the school launched its pro-gram in 2009, it began in a classroom. Then it branched into an outdoor space,Donaghy said.

It didn’t open its permanent buildinguntil this past January, so it would nothave been able to qualify for the certifica-tion until this year, Carrino said.

“Every year you reflect on, ‘What can Ido to do better? What can I do to meetthe needs of my students so they’ll bemore successful?’” she said. “The NATEFstandards and tasks are definitely going todeepen the learning and the skills, andalso enhance the instructor’s ability to bea better instructor.”

Club, which draws members from through-out Tampa Bay.

The coin club meetings are useful, bothmen said.

“They have guest speakers who teachyou about coins and collecting and what tolook for, what to be careful of,” Richard said.“A lot of the interest in coins is going to bethe history. If you start collecting a certaincoin, you start finding out about that time inhistory and why were certain dates rare andother ones not. What was going on? Wasthere a war? Was there a Depression?”

There are even coins from countries thatno longer exist.

“You learn a lot about geography and his-tory from foreign coins,” the olderSchmetisch added.

Collecting coins and currency also is agreat way to learn about politics and theeconomy, he said.

“There’s no end to it. And, I love thatabout coins. It keeps you learning.”

His son, Kyle, said coin collecting hasbeen a fun hobby, and “extremely profitable.”

“There are a lot of coins I got when Iwas a kid for $5 and $10 that are easilyworth $50 now,” said Kyle, a New Tampa res-ident. In less than 20 years, he’s made areturn that’s tenfold the investment.

Kyle said his dad loves learning as muchas he can about coins.

As for him? “I love trading things back and forth. I

like trading up,” Kyle said. “I like getting thisbag of coins for $10 and trading that for acoin that’s worth $15 and selling that coinfor $20.”

Attending the Tampa Bay Coin Clubmeetings is very informative, Kyle said.

“There’s more knowledge in these meet-ings than you can possibly imagine,” he said, noting some club members have been col-lecting coins for more than a half-century.The knowledge they have is phenomenal.”

Anyone interested in coin collectingshould feel free to attend a club meeting be-cause members are welcoming and enjoysharing their knowledge, Kyle said.

Many people who inherit a coin collec-tion have no idea what it is worth, he said. So, it’s a good idea to show it to members ofthe coin club to help assess its value.

“A coin club like this one, you can get 20second opinions in 20 seconds,” Kyle said.“Lots of times they’ll put you in touch with

a collector.”Rudy Valentin is one of those people

who has stored up decades of knowledgeabout coins and currency. The Land O’ Lakesresident was 8 when he bought his firstcoin, and that was 61 years ago.

“A friend of mine found this Spanishcoin, of Isabella II. I bought it from him foreight cents. I still have that coin,” he said.

Initially, it was a mild interest, Valentinsaid, but he became more serous about itduring the 1960s. He’s collected coins fromthe United States, Spain, Cuba, Puerto Ricoand Germany.

“I have a beautiful German coin collec-tion,” said Valentin, who has publishedarticles in Numismatist, the magazine of theAmerican Numismatist Association.

Valentin is humble about his knowledge.“You stay along long enough, you’re goingto be an expert.”

The coin club aims to be a fun place forcoin and currency lovers to gather, saidJoseph Crespo, the club’s president. Crespo, who lives in Wesley Chapel, said he begancollecting coins when he was 8.

His interest began when his mother gavehim some coins she had saved from his grand-mother’s store. That sparked his interest, so hewent to the bookstore and bought a catalog.

The 40-year-old said he’s most interestedin U.S. coins, especially between 1850 and1899. He favors coins that were minted inSan Francisco and New Orleans.

For those who are interested in learningthe values of coins, Crespo recommendsthey join coin clubs, read publications, at-tend coin shows and surf the Internet.

It’s important to know what coins areworth before buying or trading, he said. Ifpeople realize you lack knowledge, they’llcharge you too much or pay you too little,Crespo said. “Learning is power.”

Coin collectors can invest substantialamounts of money, but they don’t have to,Crespo said. It’s possible to enjoy the hobbywithout spending a fortune.

“You don’t have to be Donald Trump,” hesaid.

one route that would make its way to theUniversity of South Florida. However, to addthe university to the stops, HART wouldhave to give up on its express service.

But that’s not the only change HART isconsidering. The transit company says itplans to close two park-and-ride lots inPasco County that it’s paying nearly $24,000a year to maintain at Victorious Life Churchon Old Pasco Road, and CrossRoadsCommunity United Methodist Church onCounty Line Road.

“Yes, we are considering closing both, butnot until a suitable replacement is found,”HART spokeswoman Sandra Morrison toldThe Laker/Lutz News. “We are trying to findsites closer to Bruce B. Downs.”

But it’s not just 51X that will have park-and-rides replaced, HART wants to makeadjustments to parking situations on otherroutes like 25LX in the Brandon area, and47LX in SouthShore.

“We are always looking at more cost-ef-fective locations for park-and-rides on allexpress routes,” Morrison said. “As a rule, pri-vate business and organizations provideparking as a public service at no cost.”

Paying for the Pasco lots eats up nearlyhalf the $3 cash fare, Morrison said. Theroute carries about 17,000 passengers ayear, but the lots average only about six carsper day.

One rider who attended a recent publichearing said HART should focus more onthe quality of service it’s providing cus-tomers of the 51X to help stem decliningridership, not spend time changing theroutes.

“The buses are just in horrible shape,”said Beth Derby from Heather Sound Drive.“We get rained on inside the bus. There is noair-conditioning, and we are lucky that weget downtown in time to get to work.”Buses, she said, are typically running behindschedule, and riders miss connections at the

Marion Transit Center in downtown Tampa.“If this is your only mode of transporta-

tion into town, then you don’t have achoice,” Derby said. “But you know a lot ofus do, and if it comes between taking a busthat risks my job because I can’t make it ontime to work, then I’ll drive. I’m not going tolose my job because HART can’t get its acttogether.”

HART is struggling with funding, ham-pering its efforts to replace aging buses, saidthe organization’s senior manager of serviceplanning Steven Feigenbaum. And some ofthe problems keeping the buses on sched-ule are actually outside of HART’s control.

“The synchronization of the (traffic)lights, and the engineering of the lights, arethe responsibility with the city of Tampa,”Feigenbaum said. “I’ve been in contact withthem time and time again to be more liberalon their timing, but we have not had a lot ofluck.”

Without the lights being in sync to helpmove traffic, buses are getting stopped atmultiple lights in a short road span, he said.

What changes, if any, will be made toRoute 51X now depends on HART’s boardof directors, a group of 13 people represent-ing local and state governments. They arescheduled to hear the presentations on thevarious options in a September meeting, aswell as input from riders of the service. While the board could implement changesas early as November, Feigenbaum said it’smore likely riders won’t see any changes to51X until March at the earliest because ofmanpower shortages.

State Rep. Mark Danish, D-Tampa, attend-ed HART’s public hearing on Route 51Xearlier this month, and said he favored keep-ing the express route with local options.

“In this state, we are trying to increasemass transit, and (options) two and three(removing the express route) are going inthe opposite direction,” Danish said. “A lot ofpeople here already have been using it to godowntown, and it seems kind of strange tobasically kill that bus route now.”

and parking needs. In 2008, the FlapjackFestival flipped over to the Pasco CountyFairgrounds in Dade City.

But the public didn’t support the festivalat the new location. A year later, it shut downfor good. And Ballard still isn’t happy aboutthe move that ended an annual tradition.

“If somebody came down there and tookthe Gasparilla parade away from Tampa andsaid they were going to move it to NewOrleans, people would say ‘what’s going onthere?’“ he said.

The Flapjack Festival was more than acommunity event. It was a communityfundraiser, with local schools and churchesbenefiting financially.

The year after the festival left Land O’Lakes, one of the recipients of those fundsdecided to fill that gap in the schedule. TheLand O’ Lakes High School Athletic BoosterClub began an event that’s now known asthe Land O’ Lakes Swamp Fest, held at thesame location and also with rides, gamesand an opportunity for local organizationsto make some money.

But there’s no parade and no flapjacktheme. It’s a smaller event as well. But ac-cording to coordinator Doug Hutchinson, that’s the way they want it.

“Swamp Fest is more like a communityfair, more so than the Flapjack Festival,” hesaid.

Hutchinson believes that a smaller eventcan still be a fun destination for residents, but not get so big that it might grow out ofits current location. Hutchinson, a memberof the booster club for decades, was also acoordinator with the Flapjack Festival dur-ing its heyday. And like Ballard and others,he didn’t want to see it moved to Dade Cityback in 2008.

“In my opinion, you can’t have a commu-nity event and not have it in thecommunity,” he said.

But now that it’s gone, Hutchinson feelsSwamp Fest maintains a strong area pres-ence like its predecessor.

Ballard believes that others share his de-

sire to see the Flapjack Festival return, evenif it means just seeing the name and thememake a comeback. But Hutchinson saidthey’ve worked to create something thecommunity could embrace, the event isgrowing, and they never considered adopt-ing the Flapjack Festival name.

“Flapjack was Flapjack. We wanted ourown identity and our own little event,” hesaid.

Ironically, Swamp Fest itself is in jeopardythis year, and the venue is again the issue.Scheduled to begin Oct. 31, that timeframecould coincide with much-needed improve-ments to the Land O’ Lakes CommunityCenter the county has budgeted andplanned.

While the upgrade should be good forSwamp Fest and other area events in the fu-ture, Hutchinson isn’t sure if it will go on asplanned this year, possibly facing cancella-tion until the work is completed. Hisorganization should have a clearer pictureof the county’s plans next month, he said.

Ballard has attended Swamp Fest, and saidmany elements of the Flapjack Festival arestill there. But it’s not the same to him, andeven though it’s been several years and a re-placement is in place, the loss of the FlapjackFestival has left a bitter taste in his mouth.

“It just seems like the identity was stolenfrom the community,” he said.

Trolley rolls into mobile food service marketBy Michael [email protected]

When the owners of Lutz Mail Depot onDale Mabry Highway found that customersenjoyed spending time at their business andsocializing, they wanted to provide a smallcafe so they could sit and eat.

While brainstorming that idea, they con-sidered launching a traditional food truck. But then they got really creative.

“We thought, let’s do something coolwith this and let’s do something that’s kindof interesting and unique,” said GregSkibbee, who owns Lutz Mail Depot withhis business partner, Paul Fischer.

Make way for the trolley.Skibbee and Fischer converted a work-

ing, 35-foot motorized trolley from Paris,Texas, into the Route 66 Kitchen & DiningCar, a mobile food service vehicle that willsit outside their business during the weekserving food, and hit the road throughoutFlorida on weekends. It officially opened forbusiness last week.

While converting a trolley into a foodtruck is an unusual concept on its own,Skibbee explained that there’s more to itthan that. At more than twice the length of atypical 17-foot food truck, they can offersomething missing from mobile food vehi-cles: inside seating.

Between eight and 10 patrons can eat in-side the trolley, and awnings will provideshade for customers who use tables andchairs outside.

In addition to getting the trolley readyfor inside customers and decorating it withRoute 66-themed memorabilia, Skibbee andFischer added a new, electric cooking sys-tem with induction heating. The equipmentwill allow for fast, clean cooking, whilekeeping temperatures under control,Skibbee said.

After adding air conditioning and gettingeverything up to code — the trolley has

passed its health inspection and is road-ready — its owners will have spent around$125,000 making their idea a reality.

The transformation required a lot of ef-fort in a short time, since they justpurchased the trolley in late May. But ac-cording to Skibbee, the effort has beenworth it.

“This is probably one of the things I’mmost proud of because it took so much todo it,” he said.

The trolley made its public debut at theLutz Independence Day parade, escortingoutgoing Lutz Guv’na Suzin Carr along theparade route. But even when its ownerstake it to Home Depot for some upgrades, it

attracts plenty of attention, Skibbee said. While the Route 66 Kitchen & Dining

Car will serve hamburgers, hot dogs, sand-wiches and even breakfast to patrons, they’llbe happy to serve the underprivileged inthe community as well. Military veteransand the homeless will find themselves wel-come wherever their wheels stop that day.

“You want to support your vets and youwant to support your homeless,” Skibbeesaid.

If the community supports their Route66-themed trolley, its owners will make sureit isn’t lonely on the road. They have prelimi-nary plans to add two or three more to thefleet by the end of 2015.

The trolley already has made an impact in-side their business as well, as benches havebeen converted into sitting areas. But out-side, Skibbee believes the trolley will have apresence that fits in with the unique spirit ofLutz. And to make sure nobody forgets whereit comes from as it travels around the state, the trolley has its home community proudlydisplayed on the back.

“That’s why we actually branded it as‘Hometown: Lutz,’” Skibbee said. “It doesn’tsay ‘Hometown: Tampa’ or ‘Orlando.’ It says‘Lutz’ because Lutz is where we are.”

For more information about the Route66 Kitchen & Dining Car, visitRoute66.kitchen, or call (813) 949-5370.

The cooking area uses induction heating toprovide items such as bacon and eggs, andhamburgers to hungry customers. The air-conditioned trolley can seat eight to 10 peopleinside, and more under its awnings outside.

MICHAEL MURILLO/STAFF PHOTOSGreg Skibbee and his partner at Lutz Mail Depot, Paul Fischer, have put around $125,000into their Route 66 Kitchen & Dining Car. The trolley/food service vehicle is now parkedin front of their business during the week, and will travel the state on many weekends.

seeing contractors will build excitementinstead of creating any inconvenience atthe 13100 Fort King Road facility.

Renovating the surgical areas was nexton McKinnon’s list once a $3.5 million ex-pansion of the hospital’s emergency roomwas completed in 2012. McKinnon, how-ever, didn’t lay out the plans with herparent company until after CommunityHealth Systems Inc. completed its $7.6 bil-lion buyout of previous hospital ownerHealth Management Associates last year.

“When I talked to them about it, theyagreed that we need to be able to respond

to the needs of our commu-nity and our patients,”McKinnon said. “We had ahuge expansion of our ER acouple years ago, and the ORwas the next obvious step.”

For McKinnon, it’s hard tobelieve sometimes howmuch has happened to the120-bed hospital in just thepast year, with the newname, new owners and ex-pansion. But one thing she’sbeen proud of is how thecommunity has embracedthose changes, especially put-ting “Dade City” back in thehospital’s name for the firsttime since the 1990s.

“One of the benefits thatwe have in going through arebranding is to be able to re-tain the name which thehospital has been recognizedfor in the community,”McKinnon said. “Lending our-selves to the Bayfront namein brand recognition hasbeen wonderful. And to beable to retain the name DadeCity was very welcomed byour community.”

Upgrades to the surgical units won’tfinish McKinnon’s wish list for future im-provements. There is still a lot more she’slooking to do to help Bayfront HealthDade City keep up with the ever-changingmedical environment.

“We already have a lot of ongoing proj-ects, like the redesign of our patientrooms, and the redesign of our orthopedicjoint center,” she said. “We need to be pre-pared for more growth and how we’regoing to respond to that. And because wecare about our patients and the communi-ty, we’re prepared.”

With a new owner and anew name, change has been aconstant for Bayfront HealthDade City.

But while some may saytoo much change is bad,Shauna McKinnon knowsthat what the Dade City hos-pital has experienced inrecent months will only makeit better. And that includesplanned major changes com-ing up this winter.

McKinnon, who has ledthe hospital as its chief execu-tive since January 2013, hasbeen making stops aroundthe community sharing newsof a $3 million expansionplanned to start later this yearthat will expand the five ex-isting operating rooms, andmake some much-needed up-dates to the pre-operationarea and recovery rooms aswell.

“We have five rooms thereright now, but they are quitesmall,” McKinnon said.“Everything in the medical field evolvesover time, and it creates more of a demandfor space. We’re simply responding to thatdemand.”

The renovation and expansion could

take close to a year to complete, butMcKinnon is not anticipating any interrup-tions in service. Enough space will still bemade available during construction tokeep surgeries going, and the hope is that

Wesley Chapel All-Stars tee up a state titleBy Michael [email protected]

A batter steps up to the plate with twoouts in the final inning of a tied game. Hehits a shot near third base and drives in thewinning run.

His team not only wins the game, but astate championship as well. The crowd inthe bleachers applauds, his teammatescheer, and his coaches are proud of theteam’s title run.

Not bad for an athlete who’s up well pasthis bedtime.

Lucas Cinnante is just 6 years old, but hisgame-winning single clinched the state titlefor the Wesley Chapel T-Ball All-Stars earlierthis month. The contest was part of a three-game final day for the team that made it pastseveral must-win games and came from be-hind in the final match-up.

By the time they won the championship,a 16-15 victory over Sebring, it was nearly10 p.m.

Cinnante and his teammates didn’t playlike they were tired, and he said he wasn’treally nervous, either.

“Not that much,” Cinnante said. “Mycoach said to hit a ground ball, so I hit aground ball. I just wanted to win a game andhave fun.”

Wesley Chapel won the game and hadfun, and their final victory capped an im-pressive run for the 6- and 7-year-olds on theteam. The All-Stars are made up of the best t-ball players during the regular season acrossseveral teams, and they get together to com-pete for district and state honors.

Their run started with a strong showingat their district tournament last month inWildwood, with Wesley Chapel earning theDixie Youth Baseball District 6 champi-onship after compiling a 5-1 record in thetournament.

Wesley Chapel then competed for thestate title earlier this month in Mulberry, butit wasn’t an easy path to the championship. The tournament split the 12 competingteams into two pools, and Wesley Chapel

completed its pool play with a perfect 5-0record, earning a spot in the double-elimina-tion championship portion ofthe tournament.

Then things got challenging. They defeat-ed Wildwood next, but a loss to Sebring putthem in the elimination bracket, meaningthe next loss would end their title hopes.

They would have to keep winning toearn their way back into a rematch withSebring, and then beat them twice in a rowto claim the title. And accomplishing that

task would include playing three elimina-tion games in a single day.

Team manager Todd Owen knew thatwould be a tall order for athletes with just ahalf-dozen birthdays under their belt.

“Coach Vito (Anello) and I were saying toourselves, ‘Just let the kids play. Let themenjoy this,’” he said. “It’s going to be a tough, uphill battle to win three games in onenight. So let the kids go out, have fun, enjoyit and just be positive for the kids.

“And the kids just took the game over.

They were out there just making things hap-pen,” Owen said. “It was pure joy as far asthe coaches being able to sit there andwatch that.”

But nobody was sitting when the team fi-nally won the title. The players were elated,Owen said. “They were jumping for joy.”

“I’m not sure who was more happy, theparents or the kids,” he said.

The parents were the key to the team’ssuccess this year. Even with good coachingand talented players, the families are neces-sary to provide support, encourage andshow patience with the young athletes, andfoster a healthy environment for the team.

Cinnante’s mother, Leslie Cinnante, saidthat healthy environment was a positive ex-perience for players and parents.

“This group of people is absolutely won-derful,” she said. “Everybody gets along, everybody is encouraging, everyone is posi-tive, everybody helps each other. The All-Starteam was a wonderful team.”

While winning the state champi-onship was a special accomplishment,Owen said the team earned anothertitle during the state tournament that wasequally impressive. Wesley Chapel receivedthe sportsmanship award.

The team organized group photos withtheir opponents to remember the fun timesthey had at the tournament, for example. And Owen was told that, unlike the t-ballchampionship, there wasn’t as much com-petition for that particular title. The peoplewho came in contact with Wesley Chapelsaw them as respectful and good sportsthroughout the tournament, he said.

“I did not expect that or anything,” Owensaid. “That’s something to be proud of.”

The young Cinnante, who claims TampaBay Rays second baseman Ben Zobrist asone of his favorites, will move up to a higherlevel of t-ball next year. But as much as heloves baseball and playing t-ball, there’s onething he doesn’t like about the game:Having to wait until the next season startsto get back to practice.

“It should start like next week,” he said.

COURTESY OF TODD OWENThe Wesley Chapel T-Ball All-Stars had their skills tested at the district and state tourna-ments, but came away with the championship earlier this month.

August 6The Laker/Lutz News will be six inches taller than the current newspaper you’re holding.

We will be the same size as manydaily newspapers.

WHY THE CHANGE?

1. Credible newspaper; serious local newsA traditional size communicates even more that we’recredible newspapers committed to reporting seriouslocal news.

2. More and bigger photosPhotos help us better tell stories about our community.

3. Two SectionsA new B Section becomes a second front page to givemore prominence to feature stories. It also lets us usethe back page of the A Section for a high-profile sportssection.

4. Easy-To-Find ClassifiedsOur new B Section will house all classified pages, including our popular Best In Small Business Directory.

5. More advertising circularsThe larger format allows us to accept more advertisingcirculars — important to readers as more nationalretailers open stores in our community.

6. Bigger ads Ad sizes will be 25% bigger than current sizes. And bigger ads mean advertisers can add more offersand have more space to promote their business or service.

WE'RE GETTING BIGGERAND WE'RE EXCITED!
