Wonderful Happenings at Wenty!

The last two weeks have been full of teaching and learning opportunities and events to promote

engagement within our school.

Students have represented our school at The Opera House and at a Cumberland Council

Reconciliation Action Plan 2019-2020 Consultation meeting at Hilltop Public School

The ‘Men of Wenty’ Gardening Workshop saw Bunnings involved and supporting our school and three

new vegetable hip high gardens

We have grown to 604 students enrolled at the school.

And………………………...

The Premier’s visit yesterday!

What a delight it was to have The NSW Premier visit

Wentworthville yesterday to engage with students and

see where the new future-focussed build will be going

and the

upgrade of the

school

buildings!

It was a very

positive visit and we

value the unique

opportunity that this

new upgrade of our

school facilities will

provide for our school

community as we

educate many students

of Wentworthville into

the future!

Our school captains Zahra and Isaac were fantastic

hosts and represented the leadership team well.

Festival of Instrumental Music

I had the pleasure of being in the Concert Hall of the Opera

House and enjoying our students performing in the recorder

section of the massed ensemble on Monday evening June 18

for the Mimosa concert.

Mrs Hall and the students have been committed to learning their music throughout

the year and the evening was a huge success. So proud to see so many Public

Education students K-12 engaged in the Creative Arts! Well done Wentworthville! ☺

Cumberland Reconciliation Action Plan 2019-2020 Consultation

Mrs Gladden kindly

supported our students

at the event and I

thank her for her

leadership. She

outlines the day below.

On Tuesday 19th June 2018, 5 students attended the Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) consultation led by

members of Cumberland Council and Aunty Cleonie at Hilltop Road Public School.

A Reconciliation Action Plan aims to outline practical actions that an organisation such as council will

undertake to build strong relationships and enhance respect between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island

peoples and other Australians.

Students engaged in a Yarn Up circle; sharing stories about themselves and where they are from, listened

to a Dreamtime Story shared by Aunty Cleonie before sitting together and brainstorming ideas of what they

would like to see in the local community to help promote Reconciliation. All of the ideas that were collected

will be compiled with other suggestions put forward by other members of the community. The council will

then write the action plan.

Congratulations to Zahra, Isaac, Ayla, Skyler and Alize for representing our school with pride and

contributing your valuable ideas towards the action plan.

We recently held our second Bunnings Workshop to

encourage the men of Wentworthville to feel part of

our school. Bunnings generously donated 3 hip high

gardens which have now all been planted out by

some of our ‘Men of Wenty’ participants and I am

sure we will soon enjoy the produce.

So wonderful to have living things growing and for

the children to have a sense of where food

comes from. Thank you to our ‘Men

of Wenty’ and Mrs Felila (our

Community Engagement Officer)

who facilitated this opportunity.

Last week we hit the

magic 600 students, with new

enrolments joining our

Wentworthville school

community. We had a special

cake for the students 600-604

to cut at a morning assembly!

Class representatives from

all the school got to sample

the lovely cake too!

As I have communicated

before, we continue to grow

and with this positivity come

challenges. However, with

these challenges we are

embracing the opportunities

that lay before us over the

next two years. Our school will

continue to need to land many

demountables throughout the next 6

months (for both growth and demolition

work) to accommodate the growth and

staging of the building upgrade project.

We are very much of the opinion that it will be

‘short term loss and long term gain’. We are

hopeful, with the project progressing well and

milestones being met at this stage, that we will

have a new build fit for purpose sometime in

2021. Of course, I will keep the community informed as we progress

throughout the project, which is at the schematic design phase currently.

Some sad news

It is with great sadness that I communicate some personal news regarding Mrs Shah’s family. Last week Mrs

Shah received unexpected news of her husband’s passing whilst working interstate. As you can imagine it

has been a very difficult time for Mrs Shah and her family.

Our thoughts and condolences are with Mrs Shah, her daughter and wider family and friends as they adjust to

this devastating reality. At this stage, I am uncertain when Mrs Shah is returning to work as her family is her

first priority at this important time. I would ask the community to be respectful of Mrs Shah’s needs and

privacy during this difficult time.

Stewart House

Thank you for all the wonderful donations for Stewart House. Please be aware that this collection has now

ended. There may be another collection drive for clothing later on in the year. A notice will be put in the

newsletter letting you know when this will take place.

Weeks 8 - 9 Term 2

Sydney West Rugby Trials

Our School Captain, Isaac Fonua, recently represented

Wentworthville Public School at the Sydney West Rugby trials.

He qualified for the finals trial and just missed out on making

the final team. Congratulations to Isaac on making it to the finals selection. It is a wonderful

achievement that is only possible due to Isaac’s dedication to the sport and perseverance in training.

Well done Isaac!

Semester One SRC representatives have demonstrated terrific leadership

skills through their involvement with our school community.

So far this year they have been involved in a jointly run fundraising event

with the school’s P&C, helping to organise a Blue Day cake stall to raise

funds for National Autism Awareness.

This term they

organised and ran a

Games Day. They had

lots of fun games

available for students to

play. They raised

$367.75 which will be used to purchase board games for

all students to use in their classrooms.

The excursion complemented

learning relating to the

Geography unit of work on

Features of Places. Students

enjoyed learning Aboriginal

dances, games and history, as

well as the practical uses of a

number of native plants.

Refugee Week

Our library has a great collection of books supporting many different subjects, learning areas and interests.

This week a selection of great stories was displayed for Refugee week.

Scholastic Book Club

Twice a term we send home a Scholastic Australia book club brochure.

Participation is optional, but it can be an easy way to add books to your

own home shelves.

Our school will be hosting a Scholastic Australia Book fair in the library during Education Week

6th – 9th August. Students will have the opportunity to buy books at the fair.

Hints for reading at home

Reading to and with your child can be a very special time spent together. Set a regular time to read each day.

Talk about the book as you read, match books with family activities. Consider reading the library books

yourself so that you can connect with your child and the books they enjoy.

Book Week 2018
