Building Upgrade Over recent months the Buildings and Grounds Subcommittee and School Council have been discussing the need for a major upgrade of the Administrative Building – the building the currently house the Preps, year 1, Art and Administration. Wade Noonan, our local Member of Parliament, attended the last meeting of School Council and inspected the building. Wade is keen to support our needs but requires additional information for him to be able to argue our case. Terry is collating information the school has in relation to work, including upgrades and maintenance, which has been carried out on the building over recent years. We are proposing that the building be demolished and replaced with a new building. At this stage there is no Master Plan for this work and to support our case we would also like some preliminary drawings of the proposed works. We are seeking architect or drafts person who would be willing to volunteer their time to assist with these drawings. If you are able to assist please contact Terry Lawless on 9314 7054. Janet Condy School Council President. Parent Helpers Morning Tea-You’re invited As the term and year come to an end, the staff at Wembley Primary would like to thank all of our parents and friends who have helped out in some capacity over the course of this year. Parents support our programs in so many ways from being classroom helpers, to publishing student work, assisting on excursions and camps, organizing and supporting fundraising and school community activities, to name a few. In recognition of this contribution the staff will host a special morning tea on Friday 16 December from 10.30-11.00am, in the staffroom. We hope to see you all there. Please complete the slip that is included in today’s newsletter and return to the office. This will help us with catering. Donations Required for Christmas Hamper Raffle Donations are being sought for the Christmas hamper Raffle that will be drawn at the end of term Friday assembly. Items such as foodstuffs, Christmas trim, party goods, books, toys, games etc can be sent to school to go into the hampers. We hope to be able to assembly a number of baskets so that we have lots of prizes to draw at our assembly. Tickets were sent home with students this week can be returned directly to the office, when they are sold. Family Picnic The end of year Family Picnic will be held tomorrow night, Thursday between 5.00pm - 8.00pm. Families are invited to bring a picnic dinner to share with the family and catch up with friends and teachers. The Wembley Parent and Community Group will be holding a sausage sizzle and there will be icy poles for sale. Fingers crossed that the weather is good! Families can set up their picnics on the basketball court, the soccer ground and the oval. The choirs will be singing carols to entertain the crowd and there will be candles for sale. Every candle purchased entitles the purchaser to a ticket in the raffle that will be drawn towards the end of the night. Come along and join in the festive spirit and fun as we say farewell to 2016.

Year 4 Sovereign Hill Camp The campers arrived back at school on Friday afternoon weary but talking about the wonderful time that they had at Ballarat. The days were occupied exploring the town and surroundings of Sovereign Hill while in the evenings the students say the light and sound show, “Blood on the Southern Cross” and had a disco. The camping program at Wembley provides valuable learning and social activities for students as well as the opportunity to develop some independence and responsibility for their belongings and personal care over a couple of days. All of the students had an excellent time and are now eagerly looking forward to their Year 5 camp in 2017. Year 4 School Contribution Award Congratulations to Year 3/4A Student Emily W who was presented with the Wembley School Contribution Award for 2016 by Mr Tim Watts, Member for Gellibrand. This award is presented annually to an outstanding Year 4 student who has contributed to the school in a significant way. Emily is a member of sporting teams, participates in the instrumental music program and is a great role model to her peers and younger students. Tim attended our Monday morning assembly to present the award to a very surprised and humbled Emily. Well done Emily! End of Year excursions The following excursions are planned for this week: Wednesday – Year 6 City excursion-Year 6 students, in small groups, have planned a day trip to the city and will be chaperoned by teachers and volunteer parents. Thursday-Year 2 students are heading off to the Melbourne Aquarium to consolidate their concept work on marine environments. Friday-Year 3 classes are visiting Werribee Open Range Zoo to complement their animal and habitat topic Further outings are planned for next week and parents have been or will be notified about these by a note coming home. Prep-Year 1 Swimming Program This program has been held at the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre over the past two weeks and will conclude on Friday. The children have been very well behaved despite being tired at the end of each session. Teachers have been pleased with the progress they have seen over the past two weeks. It is vital that all children learn how to be safe around water, develop their water confidence and demonstrate swimming skills before they leave primary school. Wembley will continue to provide a differentiated, sequential swimming program for all year levels. Students in Years 5 & 6 participate in a Beach Program at Port Melbourne, in February of each year. The Years 3 & 4 groups have an outdoor program at North Melbourne Pool, also at the beginning of the year. The program for Prep to Year 2 classes is booked for late Term 2 next year and it will be held again at Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre.

End of Year Assembly – Friday December 16, 2.45pm The major end of year assembly for 2016 will be held at 2.45pm on Friday December 16. At this assembly the final Wembley Learning and Achievement Awards will be presented, certificates will be presented to all Junior School Councillors for their contribution over the year, Chess Club Awards and trophies will be presented and we will formally farewell teachers and students who are leaving Wembley at the end of the year. The Christmas Hamper Raffle will also be drawn at the assembly. There will also be an opportunity for the Year 6 students, who will be leaving us, to present their dance from the Farewell Ceremony. All parents are invited to attend this assembly. Canteen Closed – Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 December The last day the canteen will be operating this year will be on Friday December 16. Lunches will not be available on the Monday or Tuesday and children will have to bring their lunch and snacks on this day. If the weather is hot Super Dopers will be available for sale at recess and lunchtime on the Monday. The Junior School Council will be responsible for this. Pencils for Charities A suggestion was made at School Council last month that pencils and pens that are no longer wanted from the year are donated to a charity or school in need. At the end of each school year pencil cases arrive home full of the year’s coloured pencils, writing pencils and biros that often are not required. These can be collected and donated to those in need. There will be a collection box in the foyer area near the school office for all used, unwanted pencils and pens to be placed in. All donations will be accepted and arrangements made to send them off to a school in need. 2017 Term Dates

Camp Kangaroobie review

By Caleb David

The year five camp to Kangaroobie was by far my favourite camp and was extremely fun for the year five students and me.

The things I really liked about camp were the activities we did there. And all the activities were fun but there could be some changes. Like with the obstacle course to me we could have had some miner changes like being able to skip some obstacles or have three skips you can use for different obstacles throughout the course.

On camp there were lots of things to do but some improvements could be to do different activities on different days. Such as on hot days to more cooling of or activities designed for hot weather because on the day that we did canoeing if you got wet you would get really cold because it was a cloudy coldish day.

With the accommodation and food it was amazing and the accommodation was really nice and comfortable but on the first day it was really hot and the heater had been put on in the cabin during the night while it was pretty humid and being on the top bunk it got so hot I had to kick off my sleeping bag. And with the food it was amazing but at one point we found out that the beef we had was actually from the cows on the farm and that was pretty disturbing for some people and even me but I still was able to eat the beef served for dinner.

Out of all the five days we were on camp it was an amazing camp and I rate it four and a half stars out of five stars.

Camp Kangaroobie Review By Tess

Kangaroobie is a camp located in Princetown, Great Ocean Road. There are many activities at Kangaroobie such as

canoeing, survival games, farming and obstacle courses. It is a great opportunity to experience the country life.

My favourite activity was the obstacle course because it was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and extremely fun. My least

favourite activity was the canoeing because I didn’t have enough strength to paddle the oar.

The setup was amazing and perfectly planned out. The one thing that I would improve would be to add flyscreens to the

cabins to stop insects from coming in.

Kangaroobie provides various options of food such as spaghetti bolognaise, sausages, meat pies and vegetables. It was sort of a

help your self because you got to choose how much you wanted. After each meal no one left with an empty stomach.

Overall Camp Kangaroobie was a once in a lifetime experience and I would definitely recommend it to people who need a little

bit of fun once and a while.

KANGAROOBIE REVIEW

By Aidan Azzopardi

From the 21st November to the 25th of November, Wembley Primary School went to Camp Kangaroobie. Is is located off the Great Ocean Road, and is a school campsite on a farm. There are many great activities to do over 5 days with good cabins and better food.

My personal best activity was the survival game, as it was fun being a disease because I had 1 predator, humans. When I played I felt like a spy spying on someone, or like an animal ready to kill. When the game was over, I felt good about myself because I gave 2 tokens to my friend. I also liked the canoeing because I had never done it before, and because it was exercise. But the obstacle course come 2nd by heaps because it was really fun and there was hard things to do. The farm was good but not the very best. What I didn’t like was not doing any activities at all.

In my opinion, I think there could’ve been more free space to kick a ball around or something like that. Only because I like football and I had very limited space. There could’ve been a bigger gaga pit so more people could play at once and it not so crowded, and a way so Scout (one of the dogs) couldn’t keep popping all the balls. There could’ve been some play equipment in various places so kids could play on swings and monkey bars and slides.

I for one, have one comment on the food I ate. Could you make it any better? All I could taste was perfect meat and beautiful breakfasts. I would rate the food 9 out of 10 (only because the carrots didn’t taste peeled and the veggies felt undercooked on my teeth). The bunk beds were the perfect size for my body but some pillows could’ve been softer. I had a really good time with my friends, but I would think there should be a small bathroom in each cabin.
