Transfer pumps are typically used to pump oil from the gauge or surge tank and discharge it at sufficiently high pressure to the burners.

In special circumstances the high flow rate transfer pump is used to inject oil production into an existing flow line.

High, medium and low flow rate pumps are normally electrically powered, although it is possible to have diesel driven varieties of the medium and low. Centrifugal pump contains a central rotating wheel, the impeller, that uses centrifugal force to impart high velocity to the liquid, and then converts most of this velocity to pressure.
