So, a month has passed since my last

post about my quest to complete the

Virgin London Marathon on April 22nd

2018 for the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust.

As well as organising Berkeley’s first Gin

Festival, I’ve also clocked up 94 miles

training in January.

The fundraising seems to be going well, with most tickets for the festival

now sold.

However, there may still be a few available on the night.

I’ve pushed myself, braved the snow, ice, wind, rain and shine, ignored

the blisters and kept getting out there on my training runs. But with

another 12 weeks to go, any sponsorship you can spare will really help to

keep me powering through to get to the start line.

The miles have been hard and I am determined to complete this amazing

challenge and in doing so raising much needed awareness of ectopic

pregnancy and raise funds to enable them to continue the work they do to

support women and their families and working with the medical

professionals.

FEBRUARY IN THE GARDEN

Mid winter is often the most trying time of the year for gardeners. Although the shortest day has passed there may still be lots of miserable days to come. Therefore we do appreciate the trees and shrubs that brighten up our gardens at this time of year. Evergreen plants continue to give value especially the variegated and berried trees and shrubs which lighten up the garden on dull days. Why not plant a tree in 2018? It will be a big investment but well worth it. They give a focal point, add shelter, height and structure to any garden. The range to choose from is wide so careful consideration on the type of tree which would be most suitable for your own garden is essential. Do you want it to be evergreen or deciduous, is it for a small or large garden, and what type of soil have you got? Aftercare should be taken into account as large trees may need watering for up to three years after planting. When you have decided and made your selection now is the best time of year to plant as it will get the best possible start.

Now is also the time to top dress mature fruit trees and bushes with Sulphate of Potash to encourage flowering and fruiting. Another job that could be done now is to put up a new bird box ready for Spring. As the weather starts to become warmer take down and clean out any old bird boxes you may have in the garden.

I always sow my sweet peas now in a cold greenhouse. If they are sown earlier they may become too long and leggy. Growing them now will ensure they are healthy with strong roots and stout plants. Put 4 or 5 seeds per pot and push them down the compost to twice their depth and water them. When they have produced two or three true leaves I pinch out the growing tips so that they produce sturdy side shoots. Plant them outside when the frosts are over. In the cold greenhouse there are quite a few vegetable seeds that can be sown now. These include Beetroot, Leek, Radish, Turnip, Kale and Spring Cabbage. Just a few seeds per pot or module. The plants will be a good size by the time they can be planted outside and they will be more resistant to pest and disease. Sowing in modules also allows germination without competition and reduces transplant shock on the root system. Large seeds such as Broad Beans I always sow individually in a 9cm (3”) pot.

As house plants are back in fashion in our homes I thought some advice on growing and taking care of them won’t go amiss. Most houseplants require bright but filtered light. They do not like direct sunlight as this will scorch their leaves. Decaying leaves must be removed regularly. The most important factor in a pot plant’s life is watering and feeding. Avoid over watering- a plant can survive some drought but not sitting in water. Some plants like rain water at room temperature. Plants need more water where there is more natural light so reduce watering and feeding in the winter. Liquid feeds are generally best. Choose one high in Potassium for flowering plants and a more balanced feed for foliage plants. Specialist feeds are available for certain groups of plants such as Orchids. Most plants should be fed when actively growing from March to September.

There are lots more jobs in the garden that can be done this month but I do not have space for them in this article but I was given a lovely book called “the Gardeners Year” by Jane Courtier and it is a guide through the year, season by season. It is a good read full of information and wonderful illustrations published by Paragon. So if the weather is bad and there is no gardening for you then may be you could read about what to do instead! Until next month good gardening or reading.

FOOD BANK

A food bank can now be

found at St. Mary's Church

Gloucestershire Constabulary has confirmed it’s on going support to local Neighbourhood Policing having re-launched and remodelled the way we deliver local policing for

Berkeley and surrounding locations on the 23rd January. For more information on the way we operate and the officers who cover the area, visit our website at www.gloucestershire.police.uk and click the ‘Neighbourhood Policing’ link.

Covering the period 1st January to 23rd January I am pleased to report that we continue to experience an extremely low crime level for the area. During this period there was just the one crime where a business premises was entered on Canonbury Street overnight between the 12th & 13th January. Offenders gained entry by damaging the door lock and made off with a number of alcohol and cash items.

Over the Stroud and South Gloucestershire district there have been a number of residential burglaries where offenders gain entry by usually breaking a rear patio door or window to gain entry. Once inside offenders make a quick untidy search

of each room and have been mainly taking cash and jewellery items.

Back on the 6th January a detached property was broken into at Framton on Severn and similar breaks have taken place since including, Wotton under Edge, North Nibley over the county border at Thornbury and Cromhall and more recently at Stone.

Please consider using background lighting when you leave your property unattended during late afternoon or early evening.

Finally we have a new messaging service called ‘Community Alerts’ which allows you to receive information via email or text direct to your phone from Gloucestershire Constabulary.

This replaces the old neighbourhood watch system but is for all residents and not exclusively for neighbourhood watch members as the old system was. Typically you might receive real time information on crime updates such as appealing for information to traffic information and events specific to the local Berkeley area. It’s a free service and you can pick what information you want to be informed about. If you want to join the service visit the Gloucestershire Constabulary website or visit www.yourcommunityalerts.co.uk where you will be able to sign up.

Dusty's Puddle Jumping Championships

Sat 10 February - Sun 18 February

Make a BIG SPLASH this half term!

This February half term, children of all ages are being encouraged to grab their wellies, get outside and join in the puddle

jumping championship being held at Slimbridge Wetland Centre.

The competition will commence each day throughout the holiday at 2pm in Wellyboot Land, with the winners announced after

each competition. With the help of Dusty Duck, children will be encouraged to make waves and create the biggest, craziest

splash possible.

Dusty was exclusively designed by the world-famous Aardman studios to help celebrate WWT’s 70th anniversary, with the

aim of getting children closer to nature.

Children will compete against each other to see who can produce the biggest splash from their puddle jump. They will also be

judged on a range of other criteria including height of splash, enthusiasm, jumping style, creativity and drench levels.

Daily winners will be announced throughout the half term and some lucky

‘super-splashers’ will receive a fantastic prize! Every contestant will

receive a ‘splashtastic’ sticker to acknowledge their puddle jumping

skills.

As well as the main puddle jumping competition arenas, there will be

practice zones set up around the grounds to help entrants perfect their

splashing techniques.

Time: Daily 9.30am to 5pm for practice puddles and 2pm - 3pm for the

competition in Wellyboot Land.

Cost: All included in normal admission and free to members. 10%

discount for online tickets.

Vale of Berkeley Railway

2018 has started in great style. Following on

from the amendments to the company

structure, we have now been granted

registered charity status. This has immediate

financial benefits in savings on rates and

VAT, and enables us to make application for

grant funding from a number of sources.

We originally hoped to attack the

undergrowth in Oldminster Sidings in

October, but personnel changes at Network

Rail have delayed this. We have now had a formal meeting

with Network Rail, and have been given verbal authority from

them to enter the site at Oldminster Sidings and start work on

clearing the tracks there of 50 years worth of undergrowth.

This task was held up in 2017 while a detailed environmental

assessment was carried out, and full authorisation has now

been given.

Therefore by the end of January teams will be beavering

away in Oldminster Sidings on most days. There is no need

to be a member to join us, so feel free to turn up. The only

tools which we possess are our own, so please bring along

any loppers / strimmers / slashers which you are comfortable

using. The sooner we clear the land, the sooner our

Permanent Way team can start to relay the tracks.

The Berkeley Station team have also been busy. The whole

foundations of the building have now been exposed. The

tarmac surface of the original station platform is re-emerging,

as is a lovely weighbridge office which had disappeared in the

undergrowth on the station drive. The “Friends of Berkeley

Station” group will begin fund raising to restore the office and

platform this year. It was heart-warming on January 13th to

see the first passenger train in many years on the branch. A

Pathfinder tour travelled from Berkeley Road to Sharpness

and back, stopping at Berkeley Station to take on water.

The plans for VOBR include the relocation

of the Winchcombe Railway museum to

Sharpness. The first stage of this move

has now been completed. No one really

knew how many items there were, but now

we do.

A team has spent 2017 cataloguing the

many artefacts, and now we know that we

have 9,774 items.

These are now in an on-line database.

December saw 2 most enjoyable social events. We held our

Xmas dinner at the Berkeley Arms, and on the 21st the shed

was packed again for a most interesting talk about the

Dursley Branch line. This included some archive film of the

line in happier days.

If anyone would like to see what we are up to, we are at the

shed on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and would be

glad to show you around.

You can also become a ‘Friend of Berkeley Station’ by joining

the Facebook group of that name and helping us to start the

process of giving Berkeley back its station. There is also a

Facebook site containing pictures of the various activities.

The February talk is by Richard Kelsey on the subject of the

Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway, which ran from Bath,

through the Mendips to Bournemouth. This will include aerial

images of what the line looks like today. This will be on

February 21st at 7:30. Please note that this is a Wednesday,

rather than our usual day.

It starts at 7:30 and local residents are welcome to attend.

Meeting held Thursday January 11th at 7.30pm in Berkeley Town Hall.

President Judith Leriche welcomed everyone back after the Christmas break. It was agreed by

all present that the pre-Christmas Berkeley WI party in The Town Hall organised by the committee was a lovely occasion. The GFWI concert at Cheltenham Town Hall and the group Carol service at St George's Upper Cam had both been a very much enjoyed build up towards the festivities.

New Year business as usual. Payment of annual subscriptions. Agreeing and signing of the previous meeting's minutes.

National Federation of Women's Institutes offers a wide array of opportunities. Courses in a variety of subjects are offered at Denman College (The WIs country house retreat in Oxfordshire). New year is resolutions month. Public affairs have been at the core of WI achievements - raising awareness of issues that impact and concern members. The 5 possible resolutions were discussed and every member cast their vote for their preferred option.

Countywide activities range from guided walks (17th March to walk through the Dymock wild daffodils and the Dymock poets exhibition); handicrafts (hexagon table mat workshop 8th March at WI House Brunswick Square, Gloucester); holiday to Malta September; GFWI Annual Council Meeting (March 21st Cheltenham Town Hall - guest speaker Adam Henson); The Racing Club members are off to Cheltenham Gold Cup on March 16th. Very excitingly GFWI is starting collaboration with Gloucestershire NHS Trust in the development of Gloucestershire's Sustainability and Transition Partnerships (STPs) - a national initiative to improve/reshape delivery of community based health care.

2019 is Gloucestershire Federation of Women's Institutes centenary - plans are afoot to celebrate in true WI style.

Berkeley WI activities include craft group monthly; book group monthly; skittles team gathered to enter the county skittles tournament; scrabble tournament entrants. A trip to Highgrove is in the planning.

Speaker of the evening was Richard Cann who spoke about The Great East Window of Gloucester Cathedral. Accompanied by some wonderful photographs Richard shared his enthusiasm and knowledge of Gloucestershire. He reminded us of the history of both the city of Gloucester and the cathedral. Having explained the historical context Richard then developed his talk about the Great East Window.

This tennis court sized window (22 metres high and 12 metres

wide) installed in the 1350's is one of the greatest landmarks of European medieval stained glass. The window is situated in the Quire behind the high altar at the heart of the cathedral. Created as part of the reconstruction of the Quire after the burial of King Edward 11 the window depicts the hierarchy rising from earth to heaven. The brightly coloured glass panels move up from peasantry through shields of nobility above (including the Berkeley shield) on upwards to tiers of bishops, abbots and saints, apostles and angels. The centrepiece being The Blessed Virgin Mary and Our Lord Jesus Christ in majesty flanked by the 12 apostles.

Richard urged those present to go and see this local magnificence for ourselves. It is a privilege to live so close to this astonishing piece of history and all Gloucestershire residents should see it for themselves.

Berkeley Congregational wishes to thank everyone that made our Carols by Candlelight Service so joyful on Sunday 17th December.

The Church was almost full and hopefully everyone heard and sang their own favourite Carol.

Many thanks to Julian the pianist for his wonderful playing and his quickness to meet the congregation’s choices. Hopefully everyone enjoyed their time being there and refreshments certainly went down very well after all the singing! We wish you all a Happy New Year.

PastTimes would like, through the Flyer, to thank everyone who gave a prize for their Christmas Raffle. It was a great success. We hope those who were lucky enough to win were happy with their prize.

At our last meeting before Christmas two girls from school sang a carol. They were so confident, it was lovely. We were then each handed a Christmas card made by children at the school. They had all worked so hard. We

would like to say thank you to the pupils and to their teachers. It is always a pleasure to see them.

We then ended with the Nightingales who sang a selection of Christmas songs. A prefect close to a lovely afternoon.

On behalf of the PastTimes,

M Washbourne

Once again a tremendous response from Berkeley residents with 26 bin bags of cards being taken to Cheltenham to help with the Cobalt Unit Fund raising effort. We even had a mention on Radio Gloucestershire this year when the topic was being discussed by the fund administrators who appreciated the efforts by the Berkeley community.

For further information on the work they do in Cheltenham visit www.cobalthealth.co.uk

Thank you all again and Ye Olde Shoppe, Greengrocer Gordon and the Break Shop for providing collection points.

With grateful appreciation to everyone who came or donated.

We don't ask you to contribute or donate anything other than your company. You'll be assured of a warm welcome and I guarantee that within minutes you'll find someone to chat with you. Dear Supporter,

BERKELEY PRIMARY SCHOOL SWIMMING POOL LOTTERY 2018/19

Berkeley Educational Swimming Trust would like to invite you again to participate in the above lottery. We have been running this for a few years and it has raised valuable funds to help us to maintain the pool. As you can appreciate there is an ongoing need to keep the pool to the standards required and this is one way in which you can support us knowing that your contribution is helping to keep the pool running with the added bonus of the chance to win a prize. For a payment of £12 per number, per year (April to March) your no.(s) will be entered into the monthly lottery. You can have as many numbers as you wish and based on similar interest to previous years we are looking at a MONTHLY winning number prize of £25 and runner-up of £15, donating approximately 50% of the funds raised to the pool. (The prize money could be more or less depending on how many tickets we sell). There will be one draw each month and this will take place in the first week of each month. The first one being in April. If you are interested could you please complete the application slip and return it to the school office (term time only) or to the address on the slip with the money in an envelope marked “Swimming Pool Lottery”.
