Welkam tu d’ Werl d’ Norf’k
“
”This is a world where you can be as laid back (or busy)
as you want to be. Where the only fast food is pulled
fresh from soil or sea. Where there are no traffic lights.
Where strangers wave as you pass by. Time moves
slowly here. Even our Norf’k dialect has changed little.
A salty remnant of Old English, it’s easy on the ear:

“Welcome to The World of Norfolk”
3
The modern world barely intrudes in this place. For centuries, plants and animals have made this a temperate refuge in the middle of the Pacific. Our rainforests are home to the world’s tallest tree fern. There are over forty unique plant species and over twenty species of birdlife.
A Natural Island
“Having my children grow up in an
environment that’s still so natural is a
blessing. Bushwalking in the morning,
snorkelling in the afternoon – and if
we’re lucky, we’ll round out the week
with a Phillip Island trek. Wherever you
go, the environment and the views are
inspiring. Always uplifting and full of life...”
SORREL WILBY
Chair of the Australian Geographic
Society & Getaway Reporter 9 years
You’ll experience wonders almost
everywhere. Come and explore our
world. All we ask is that you tread
lightly, as we do.
Phillip and Nepean IslandThese two small, uninhabited gems
bask to the south – just a short boat trip
away. Disembark for a casual day trek
around Phillip and you’ll marvel at the
majestic landscape with its variety of sea
birds, unusual plants, beautiful flowers
and rare fauna.
Botanical Gardens Lose yourself in five hectares criss-
crossed with lush, cool, walking trails.
You’ll encounter giant vines, tree ferns,
whitewood trees and many rare, exotic
rainforest species. But really, with 182
native species, our world is one big
botanic garden.
Biking Craggy terrain offers everything from
gentle slopes to heart-in-mouth downhill
runs. But wherever you go, the sheer
beauty of the landscape will take your
breath away. No need to bring a bike,
there are plenty for hire.
Bird WatchingWonders on the wing: you’ll encounter
red-breasted robin, green parrot and teal
blue kingfisher (the nuffka). Each Spring
we welcome migratory terns, frigate
birds, mutton birds, shearwaters and
boobies. They’ve been stopping by since
time immemorial.
Horse-riding and Carriage Rides Whether you’re a beginner or an
experienced rider, there’s nothing like
exploring on horseback. Take a detour for
billy tea and damper. Not saddle-ready?
Two placid Clydesdales will take you on a
carriage ride down memory lane.
Gardens As you make your way around, keep an
eye out for the many beautiful gardens
that welcome visitors. Even their names
conjure up images: Camelot Gardens,
Music Valley, Strawberry Fields and Walk
in the Wild – to name a few.
BushwalkingAround a third of our land is made up
of National Parks and Reserves. Over
ten spectacular trails take you through
temperate and tropical forests where
you can see the world’s tallest tree
ferns. Follow loop trails to lookouts and
coastal sea views. Walking trails are well
maintained. Go rugged. Go romantic.
Picnic among the pines...
Lookouts Enjoy eye-opening sea views on your
way to Mt Pitt, Mt Bates and the Captain
Cook monument. Other breathtaking
photo opportunities include Flagstaff Hill,
Bird Rock and Puppy’s Point.
Reserves Admire them. Explore them. In our
world, do everything at your own pace.
Parks and reserves include Anson Bay,
Bumboras, Hundred Acres, Cockpit and
Cascade. Each is serene and delightful.
You may encounter convict ruins, such
as those along Kingston walking tracks.
BBQ Picnic areasOur public BBQ picnic areas are
great places for a break. We often use
them ourselves. They’re wood-fired
and have tables and chairs. Find them
mostly dotted around coastal areas –
with spectacular views of course.

The pristine Pacific is central to our lives, and it encircles us. Immense schools of fish journey here on currents from its deepest regions. With no commercial fishing, the waters are always teeming. Along the diverse coastline are sheltered bays ideal for swimming, diving and boating.
Weather and water are generally mild
and pleasant. Observe it from above or
immerse yourself in it. Only one problem:
you may never want to leave.
Swimming & Snorkelling32 kilometres of diverse shoreline
embrace secluded beaches. The two
most popular are at Emily Bay and
Slaughter Bay. The coral and sea life has
to be seen. Grab some snorkelling gear
and take the plunge. Or take a tour with
a sea scooter… the fastest way to get
around under the surface!
Diving Enthusiasts travel from around the world
just to dive in our waters. You’ll marvel at
the massive schools of fish, underwater
caves and sheer rocky walls clad in coral.
Visibility usually exceeds 20 metres, and
there are over 30 world-class dive sites
– suiting levels from beginner to expert.
Crowds? Unheard of.
Sea Kayaking Join a group tour and paddle your way
around our rugged coastline. Pause
to admire the crystal clear waters with
immense basalt and sandstone rock
formations towering above. Explore small
inlets and hidden coves accessible only
by water.
Boating Prefer not to get your feet wet? Kick back
on a cruise around our stunning coastline.
Go on an adventure to Phillip and Nepean
islands. Or marvel at tropical fish and
coral in the lagoon through the glistening
hull of a glass bottom boat.
BoardingThere are several prime surfing spots
around the island and beyond the reef,
so bring your board. Or you can hire a
‘spy board’, which is a relaxing and novel
way to view marine life in the lagoon.
The Clearest Ocean
“The most spectacular element of our
marine parks is the beautiful coastline.
The contrasting landscapes, from
towering basalt columns to the white
sands, and the beautiful coral reef
system. Get yourself out amongst the
sea birds, whales, turtles and fish.
You will be rewarded.”
PETER CASSIDY
Marine tour guide
Fishing We tend to call it ‘catching’ – and with
good reason. Hire a rod and casually cast
your line from a pier or beach. Charter a
boat with a local expert and find yourself
reeling in succulent Sweet Lip (we call
them Trumpeter), Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo
and Great Southern Marlin – naming just
a few. To complete your day, wood
smoke your catch on an open BBQ.
There are plenty dotted around the island.

Feel as if your body and mind are being born anew. Do nothing at all, or pack it all in – from yoga to paintball; deep sea diving to mountain climbing. Explore our history and culture; seek out unusual wildlife; or hunt for bargains. Dining is a real adventure too, and you’ll experience food as Nature intended.
Seasonal fruit and vegetables are bursting
with flavour, and contented livestock
slowly attains its plumpness. There are
many cafes and restaurants, presenting
a tantalising blend of Western and
Polynesian cuisine.
Wining and DiningAlmost everything we eat is plucked from
soil or sea. Locals and visitors often
congregate for a cliff-top fish dinner – the
freshest fish imaginable, complemented
by locally grown salads (and stunning
views). Some of our delicacies are even
inherited from the legendary Bounty
mutineers and Tahitian foremothers,
such as banana-based treats like pilihai
and mudda. Our sweet fruit pies are
baked in heaven. You’ll find more than
35 restaurants and cafes, offering
a wide choice of gourmet delights.
Well BeingSurrender yourself to all kinds of luxurious
pampering packages and treatments.
After a day of adventure you can replenish
mind, body and spirit with yoga, chi-gong,
meditation, pilates or tai chi. Book those
tired muscles in for a hot rock massage
or re-mineralising body wrap!
Social Fun Enjoy social activities including squash,
tennis, bowls, archery, clay target
shooting, pistol shooting, paintball,
boxercise, gym, martial arts, triathlon and
cycling. Or experience one of the most
spectacular golf courses in the South
Pacific! You may even like to plan ahead
and take part in annual competitions and
tournaments.
A Lifestyle Like No Other
“What I love here is the great fish, variety
of meats and the way people create
dozens of recipes from seasonal produce.
When you visit look out for passionfruit
pie, sour milk bread with guava jelly, and
my favourites –Hihi pie (periwinkles)
and Dads’ Mudda (a green banana dish).”
SIMON BIGG
Chef and co-founder

Markets Sunday morning stop by the arts and
crafts markets, where you can pick up
locally made souvenirs or tantalising
treasures like home made guava jelly,
passionfruit pie and coconut bread.
There is a farmer market every Saturday
morning with plenty of locally grown fresh
produce on offer, or visit the fruit and
veggie stalls dotted across the island
with honesty boxes.
ShoppingFor retail therapy, choose from over 70
outlets in the Burnt Pine area. Go to town
on imported low tax products such as
perfume, cosmetics, jewellery and shoes.
But do take note – not all shops are
7 day trading, so best check beforehand.
As a visitor the Liqueur Mart offers you
30% off spirits and liqueurs (another
Norfolk nicety).
GalleriesSmall galleries and craft cottages offer
locally made souvenirs. Talented artists
and artisans produce uniquely Norfolk
fine arts and crafts. Fine pottery, painting,
jewellery, woodturning, photography,
textiles, weaving and plaiting.

There is only one streetlight, and you can
park your rental car with the keys in the
ignition. Complete strangers will wave as
you drive by. We believe this is how life
should be lived. In our world, it probably
always will be.
First InhabitantsThe very first humans here were probably
East Polynesian seafarers. It seems they
arrived in the 14th or 15th century, stayed
for a few generations, and then departed
again. To this day, experts are still trying
to figure out the details.
European Discovery Captain James Cook first arrived here in
1774, aboard the good ship Resolution.
He was evidently impressed – it was the
only time he ever described anywhere as
‘paradise’. In those days, the island was
uninhabited and he named it after the
Duchess of Norfolk. She must have been
a remarkable woman indeed to deserve
such an honour.
Convict Era Actually, there were two convict eras.
Governor Arthur Philip established the
first prison colony here in 1788, which
lasted but a few years. The island lay
empty until a second, much harsher,
penal colony continued from 1825 until
1856. These days historians consider
both eras important, and the Kingston
area has been nominated for World
Heritage listing.
Bounty MutineersThe Bounty mutiny needs little
introduction. Its colourful characters
have been played over the years by
movie legends from Errol Flynn to Mel
Gibson. You may not realise we’re
mostly descended from those colourful
characters and their Tahitian wives. In
1856, the growing families relocated
here from their original Pitcairn Island
home. The move was decreed by
Queen Victoria, and as a mark of gratitude,
‘God Save the Queen’ remains our
national anthem to this day.
A world where time moves more slowly. We are a unique people, descendants of the legendary Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian wives. They bequeathed us our language, our culture, and our approach to life. Here, elegant Georgian buildings are still in daily use.
History and Culture
“We encourage visitors to connect with
their past on many levels. Discover what
was so special about the Melanesian
Mission; why Polynesian dancing was
banned, see the most important piece of
Australia’s First Fleet history, and how the
convict prisoners lived.”

Local Traditions A tradition handed down by our Tahitian
foremothers, the art of weaving is still
practiced on the island today. You can
purchase handmade items such as hats
and bags in shops or at the markets.
Here, everyone waves and calls each
other by nickname, such as ‘Hook’ or
‘Lettuce’ (if you don’t believe us, check
out our phone book!) You may also be
lucky enough to witness the arrival of
a cargo boat to the island – a procedure
that never fails to entertain, because
the lack of a deepwater port means
everything is offloaded in nets onto
small boats.
17
Georgian ArchitectureMany of our elegantly proportioned
buildings were built by convicts.
They comprise possibly the southern
hemisphere’s finest collection of restored
Georgian architecture. Several buildings
do duty as museums, and you’ll marvel
at the wealth of artefacts on view.
HMS Sirius HMS Sirius was the mighty flagship of the
First Fleet. She was tragically wrecked
on our reef, and artefacts recovered form
a key part of our museum collection.
Items range from massive anchors and
cannons; to humble buttons and buckles
worn by passengers and crew.
Number 10 Quality Row Take a deep breath, this is history you
can feel... A group of Fletcher Christian’s
descendents set up home at Number
10 when they first arrived from Pitcairn
Island. The house has been meticulously
restored to the way its occupants would
have lived in the 1840s.
Historical Attractions In the convict cemetery, headstones
provide detailed evidence of a horrific era.
Take a stroll or a guided tour. Government
House is also popular. Built in 1828, it is
one of the earliest intact government
buildings – not just here, but in all of
Australia. It’s open once a month to the
public. And don’t miss Fletcher’s Mutiny
Cyclorama, an amazing 360° pictorial
display created by local artists. For a
bit of quiet contemplation, tiptoe into
St Barnabas Chapel.
Museums Over 7 museums include unique items
from the first, second and third
Norfolk settlements; from HMS Bounty
and Pitcairn Island; plus genealogy
resources, agricultural tools and more.
Here, artefacts date back to 1790.
