Our parish family at Good Shepherd is greatly saddened by the passing of our beloved pastor Father Richard, and many have been asking for ways to honor his legacy of Christ-like service to our community. Father Richard poured his whole self into living out Good Shepherd’s mission of discipleship and evangelization. As pastor of Good Shepherd, he taught our community firsthand that “By God, We Can Do It.” He led us out of debt, bringing Good Shepherd into a strong position to continue spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ. When Good Shepherd acquired new land in 2019, Father Richard saw this as an exciting opportunity for our future, and he greatly hoped that the loan would be paid off as quickly as possible so that Good Shepherd might remain in a strong position to carry out the work of Christ’s Church. In memory of Father Richard’s faithful leadership and stewardship of Good Shepherd, one way to honor his legacy is by contributing to the Father Richard Memorial Fund which is directed toward the land acquisition debt. Checks can be made out to Good Shepherd Catholic Community with “Father Richard Memorial Fund” on the memo line. Please keep Father Richard and his family in your prayers. May he rest in peace.

Weekly Reflection
CHOICE “If you choose you can keep the commandments,” Sirach tells us. God “has set before you fire and water; to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand” (Sirach 15:15, 16). This is a great mystery: God does not control us so completely that we cannot choose our own path. We have certain boundaries, of course, but no one but we can choose our way within those boundaries. In today’s reading from Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us of our freedom and our responsibility for our lives. He calls us to look beyond the words of the commandments, all the way to their meaning. Look beyond the adultery to the selfishness that poisons our love. Look beyond the murder to the anger that eats away at our compassion. Look beyond the perjured testimony to the lies and deception that drive our behavior. Our vocation is to choose life for ourselves, and to choose a path through our part of the world that helps make life possible and more abundant for others as well. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
Saturday, February 29 at Good Shepherd | 9:30am It is difficult for those of us who have enough to truly understand the situations that families living in poverty experience every day – the decisions they have to make, and the fears and frustrations they feel. That is why we are inviting you to walk a mile in the shoes of those facing poverty by participating in our Poverty Simulation. This program will allow participants to assume the role of a low-income family member living on a limited budget. It lasts about 2 hours and the goal is to sensitize participants to the realities faced by low-income people. Child care will be provided. Learn More About the Catholic Faith Rite of Welcome and Acceptance

On Wednesday, January 29, at the 7:00pm Mass, we celebrated the Rite of Acceptance and Welcome into GSCC’s RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) process. We welcomed Wes H, Jenna H, Sean L, Lorie L and Elizabeth R. All five individuals have already completed a period of Inquiry at GSCC covering basic information about the Catholic Faith.
Jenna has yet to receive the Sacrament of Baptism, so she was accepted as a Catechumen. Wes, Sean, Lorie, and Elizabeth have already received the Sacrament of Baptism in another faith tradition, so they were welcomed as Candidates. They each chose a sponsor who will journey with them through the RCIA process and who provides a compelling witness in matters of faith.
Through RCIA, they will continue to receive catechetical instruction which leads them not only to an appropriate acquaintance with the teachings of the Church, but also to a profound sense of the mystery of salvation in which they desire to participate. At Sunday Mass, Catechumens and Candidates, and those seeking to be, leave the Church after the homily to attend BOW (Breaking Open the Word) where they reflect on the Word of God together led by a BOW facilitator.
We express our heartiest congratulations to these five individuals on their RCIA journey. Please continue to pray for and encourage them. They continue to need your example, support, welcome, and prayers. To Christ be the glory now and forever!

Outreach Services at Good Shepherd
Good Shepherd is saying farewell to our beloved Kathy Guarino, who has been a parishioner since 2006 and has served on staff as our Coordinator of Outreach Ministries since July 2015. Kathy has been instrumental in cultivating strong partnerships with organizations outside our parish so that Good Shepherd can serve those in need in the most impactful ways. While
we are sad to see Kathy leave, we are excited that she and her husband are now moving back to Chicago to be closer to their children and extended family. Thank you, Kathy, for your faithful service to our community. We will miss you!
Good Shepherd has recently hired parishioner Ray Matteson as our new Coordinator of Outreach Ministries, replacing Kathy Guarino. Ray began on Feb. 3 and is working alongside Kathy for a few weeks for a smooth transition. Ray is married to Colleen and they have four grown children. As a parishioner of Good Shepherd for 24 years, Ray has been active in
many ministries including Faith Formation, RCIA, CRHP, and the Greeter Ministry. After retiring from a successful career with Raytheon Company, Ray founded the Burchell Youth Development Foundation, a non-profit that uplifts and sustains the youth of Jamaica (empoweringjamaica.org). Ray is passionate about service and outreach, and we are excited for him to join our team!
What exactly is a Stephen Minister? One way to put it is that Stephen Ministers are the After People. Stephen Ministers are there: after the devastating phone call; after everyone has left the
funeral; after the relationship falls apart; after the doctor says there’s no more they can do; after the nursing home welcomes you; after the last child drives away from home; after the gavel comes down on your loved one; after the baby arrives demanding your all; after your last paycheck; after your loved ones have heard your story too many times, but you still need to talk. Blake Noonan, FOCUS Missionary
Blake is the son of Chris and Janet Noonan and has one sister, Sammi and a brother, Hollis. Blake is a graduate of Texas A & M University and is serving as a missionary at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas.
"I consider myself extraordinarily blessed to have grown up as a member of the Catholic community here at Good Shepherd. The
formation that I have received as a member of this parish helped me to establish myself in knowledge of the faith and has given me a place to come home to whenever I can visit.
Even with this background, when I came into college as a freshman, I found that my faith was placed under immense trial. In my search for self-realization I found myself under the influence of many of the pressures of the college culture; pressures to maintain a social image, to idolize success, and to find reprieve and pleasure in the party and hookup culture. I often felt alone, even when surrounded by thousands of people in a similar stage of life as me. I tried to continue to pursue the faith by getting involved in various ministries and grounding myself in Christ-centered friendships, but what really changed everything was when a FOCUS missionary, Dan Jordan, invited me to be a part of his bible study.
Through this study, and later discipleship, I was able to find a firm foundation in my faith and in my community; to sink my roots deep into the Gospel and was equipped to help others to do the same. I have found a new freedom, a deep intimacy, and true joy in Christ Jesus and now for the sake of souls just like me, I am called to spread the message of salvation to those in need. Truly, the college campus can be a place of deep spiritual desolation, but it is also the time when many decide who they will be. My hope is that I can share my experience with these students in the hope that they can find themselves, as I did, at home in Christ and the Catholic Church."
