Welcome Fighting Irish Fans,

I would like to thank the parents, alumni, fans, and sponsors for what I know will be an exceptional Fall athletic season and school year. The O’Dea community is grateful for your continued support

of the athletic program and the mission-driven principles of Character, Faith, and Service that we strive to develop in the young men who proudly call themselves O’Dea Fighting Irish. For nearly a century the O’Dea experience has formed bonds of brotherhood cultivated in classrooms, on athletic fi elds, and in our many campus ministry programs. This brotherhood lasts well beyond graduation, spanning lifetimes and generations of O’Dea graduates.

We are proud of the hard work and commitment displayed by each student-athlete participating on our Cross-Country, Football, and Golf teams. Under the exceptional guidance of dedicated coaching staffs, the 2017 season promises to generate a high level of excitement. May this season exemplify the pursuit of excellence as we celebrate our longstanding tradition of athletic success with sportsmanship, hard work, and a selfl ess focus on the team.

Thank you for the role you play in supporting our student-athletes and for helping advance our shared mission of providing each student with a Catholic, college-preparatory education in the spirit and tradition of the Essential Elements of an Edmund Rice Christian Brother Education.

“We constantly strive to represent our school, and our community, with pride and dignity.”

Welcome Fighting Irish Fans!

I would like to welcome you all to another exciting season of Irish

Football. We have had a great offseason. Our Strength and Conditioning Coach, Paxton Paynter, is making an impact on our program and was an important part of our success last season. The young men that participated in the summer program have made tremendous gains. I am so proud of their hard work and dedication and am excited to see their leadership in action.

We have a talented and committed group of coaches that our fans should be very excited

about. Not only do our coaches have a lot of experience, we have a number of young, enthusiastic coaches, making this arguably the best coaching staff in the state of Washington. We will continue to develop these young men into leaders and challenge them to be the best they can be on and off the fi eld. The future of our program looks bright; we are excited to take it to a new level.

At O’Dea High School, athletic success is a long-standing tradition. That success is achieved with hard work and discipline, and is celebrated with sportsmanship and a selfl ess

focus on the team. We constantly strive to represent our school, and our community, with pride and dignity. The young men of O’Dea continue to amaze me and, like you, we are extremely proud of them and we are excited to watch them in action.

I am excited about the 2017 football season but I am even more excited to work with an outstanding group of young men in the classroom and on the fi eld. O’Dea is a school with a rich tradition of winning with honor, and I look forward to sharing with you our continued athletic successes for years to come. Thank you

for your support; we simply wouldn’t be where we are without you.

Live Jesus in our hearts, forever!

QUARTERBACK (QB) The player who receives the ball from the center at the start of each play before either handing it to the running back, throwing it to a receiver, or running with it himself. The quarterback is usually the player in charge of running the offense on the field. He is also the guy that usually informs the offense of the play while in the huddle.

CENTER (C) The offensive lineman who hikes (or snaps) the ball to the quarterback at the start of each play. The center lines up in the middle of the offensive line, between the offensive guards.

GUARD (LG/RG) A member of the offensive line. There are two guards on every play, and they line up on either side of the offensive center.

OFFENSIVE TACKLE (LT/RT) A member of the offensive line. There are two tackles on every play, and they line up on the outside of the offensive guards.

TIGHT END (TE) An offensive player who serves as a receiver and also a blocker. The tight end lines up beside the offensive tackle either to the right or to the left of the quarterback.

WIDE RECEIVER (WR) An offensive player who lines up on or near the line of scrimmage, but split to the outside. His primary job is to catch passes from the quarterback.

FULLBACK (FB) An offensive player who lines up in the offensive backfield and generally is responsible for run-blocking for the halfback and pass-blocking for the quarterback. Fullbacks are usually bigger than halfbacks, and also serve as short-yardage runners.

David Bazzi // VARSITY HEAD COACH

A 1996 O’Dea graduate, Coach David Bazzi returned to O’Dea in 2010 to take over the program from retiring O’Dea and Washington State Hall of Fame Coach, Andy Slatt. In his six years, Coach Bazzi has coached numerous state qualifi ers while continuing Coach Slatt’s legacy of guiding his athletes into the collegiate ranks with athletes competing at West Point, University of Portland, University of Chicago, PLU and Xavier. While at O’Dea as an athlete, Bazzi competed at the state meet six times in cross country and track & fi eld, was a member of the 1995 State champion track team and was runner-up in the 1996 state 3200m race prior to earning All-American honors in the 2 mile race later that season. Bazzi went on to compete at the University of Washington and was also selected as a member of the US National Team for the 2001 World University games in Beijing, China. In 2016 Bazzi was inducted into O’Dea’s esteemed Wall of Honor.

The 2017 Irish Cross Country team is led by a trio of accomplished senior runners including state track fi nalists Isaac Mohn (1600) and Sean Lewis (800), along with individual state XC qualifi er Andrew Hogan. With these three young men at the front, a strong group of junior and sophomore runners, and the addition of new assistant coach Jason Odem, the Irish look to have their strongest squad in years.

After a summer of solid training, the Irish start their competitive season September 15th at Lower Woodland Park and race through the State Championships on Saturday, November 4th. Go Irish!

Brian Vaughan // VARSITY HEAD COACH

Brian Vaughan has been O’Dea’s Head Golf Coach since 2006. During that time Brian has coached fi ve Metro individual winners: Cory Mehl won in ’06 and ’07, shooting a 60 at the ’06 event, Sandy Vaughan won in ‘08, Tyler Kato in ’10, and David Fonua in ‘12. Collectively, Coach Vaughan’s teams have placed second in state twice, and third once. Brian enjoys watching the boys learn to be disciplined and teaching them to enjoy the lifelong game at a very competitive level.

The 2017-2018 O’Dea Golf Team is a very talented and athletic group of young men. Five sophomores make up the bulk of the eight-man team. Lorenzo Topacio, the only senior on the squad, was a qualifying medalist last year and is the team captain. The Irish will utilize Jefferson Park Golf Course, home of O’Dea Alum Fred Couples ‘77, and its excellent new practice facilities. If this group practices hard

they could be a force down the road. The future is bright for the Irish golf team. Go Irish!
