Installation of Fr. Durante as Rector of St. Thomas Aquinas Cathedral 19th Sunday of the Year (B) 2018 (August 12, 2018)

Homily by Bishop Randolph Calvo Why is this church called a cathedral? It is not because it is the biggest church in Reno. Nor is it the first

church built or the oldest in Nevada. That distinction goes to St. Mary’s in the Mountains in Virginia City. What makes this place a cathedral is that chair. The word “cathedral” comes from the Greek and Latin word, cathedra, meaning chair—the chair of the bishop of the diocese. It is more than a piece of furniture, though; it is symbol, a symbol of the Church’s teaching ministry and pastoral service. It is also a symbol of unity.

The Diocese of Reno stretches across the northern part of Nevada, bordering California on the west and Utah on the east. This cathedral is the symbol of unity of all the parishes and missions in this diocese and of all the Catholics who live in these seventy thousand plus square miles. It is also a symbol of our unity with all Catholic churches throughout the world and especially with the Church of Rome.

Today we have formally installed Fr. Chuck Durante as the Rector of the Cathedral. As bishop I am the pastor but I also have responsibility for all the churches in the diocese. In the coming weeks I will be presid-ing at the installation of the new pastors in Gardnerville, Zephyr Cove, Elko, Battle Mountain, Carson City, and here in Reno at St. Michael, St. Rose and Our Lady of the Snows. Bishops do not possess the gift of bilocation, so it is the practice of the church for a bishop to entrust the pastoral care and administration of a cathedral to a rector. So Fr. Chuck will minister here in my name.

If the cathedral is a symbol of unity, then its ministry—its service and responsibility—is to foster unity. What does a cathedral do? Above all, it is to be a source of unity for all Catholics in the diocese. While the parish community of the cathedral is similar to other parishes, it has special calling to think beyond itself to include the diocese. Where is this unity most visible? Here at the Eucharistic gathering, here at Mass. Here in a tangible way we find what unites us as one and it is Jesus Christ, the bread of life.

These Sundays we have been listening to the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John—the bread of life dis-course. Jesus invites us to believe and to partake of the bread of life—his flesh and blood—that we might have eternal life. It is here at Mass that we receive that gift of love. In the first reading, we heard of this message given to Elijah, who was weary and discouraged: “Get up and eat”. To all who are weary and dis-couraged, that message is given: “Get up and eat” for here is our food for the journey of life. That food is Jesus himself--the bread of life--who nourishes, strengthens, sustains and gives us life.

In the second reading from the Letter to the Ephesians, we are warned: “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were sealed for the day of redemption.” How would we cause the Holy Spirit to grieve? By attitudes and actions that divide us: bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling. There’s a lot of this going on in our nation today and it is dividing us. But it can’t be that way in the Church, if we are to be faith-ful to God and true to the Holy Spirit. We witness to our faith in Christ by our unity. Instead of giving grief to the Holy Spirit, St. Paul tells to imitate God by being “kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving…” That’s how in practical ways we foster unity. It’s not rocket science. We foster unity reaching out to care and support one another.

There is another name for a cathedral: it is called the “Mother Church of the Diocese”. This title implies not so much a position of honor as a responsibility for all the churches in the diocese. As the “Mother Church”, a cathedral is a place and a community where all Catholics feel welcome and at home. It is mater-nal, gathering in tenderness and love all who enter. It leads the other parishes in the diocese by the example of its worship, community and service. There are differences among parishes and Catholics have different tastes and preferences in music and the liturgy. But a cathedral lifts us above our differences to recognize what we hold in common: our faith in Jesus Christ, the bread of life. It lifts us up to live the unity that comes from our sharing in the bread of life, the Body of Christ.

We had a wonderful liturgy and celebration last Sunday as Bishop Calvo led the ritual for the in-stallation of a new rector and many gathered for a BBQ that afternoon as a sort of formal wel-come to Fr. Lucio and myself. Many, many thanks for all who helped in a special way in the liturgy, especially Deacon Joe who was MC, Deacon Bob, Anne and Reuben for the music, our sacristan and extra servers, all who worked in ushering and hospitality for the Mass and the members of the Pastoral and Finance Councils present. Special thanks to the Knights of Columbus & Women of Saint Thomas who supplied the food, did the cooking and cleanup for a very nice feast. There was plenty for all and a wonderful spirit present for the day. I am particularly grateful for the prom-ise of prayer that was made by you, the parishioners, both at the Mass and individually to me. Immediately preceding my notes in the bulletin today is the homily Bishop Calvo gave at the Mass, reminding all of us of the importance of working together as a parish family and reaching out as the Mother Church of the Diocese. We at the Cathedral are entrusted with a special mis-sion in that regard. Before I left Carson City I extended an invitation to the good people at St. Te-resa’s to come and visit their Cathedral. Such an invitation can be extended to all parishioners in the Diocese of Reno. We are called to welcome them and open our hearts to receive all who come. Thank you to one and all for your welcome and ongoing support of Fr. Lucio and myself.

We have a new painting of the Cathedral hanging in Righini Hall as a gift from Bruno and Edna Benna’s children. Bruno and Edna were married at the Cathedral in 1950. Over their many years of married life they were an active and generous part of the Catholic community in Reno in count-less ways. In 2008 they commissioned local artist Roy Powers to paint the Cathedral as a special commemoration for them of their marriage and the role the Cathedral played in their lives. In the past few years Bruno, and then Edna, have gone home to God. Their children donated this paint-ing to our parish as the fitting place for it to hang henceforth. Special thanks to the Benna family. Take a moment to check out this lovely painting in Righini Hall.

A word about outreach to the sick in our parish. If you or someone you know is seriously ill or struggling under the burden of years and would like to have Holy Communion brought to the home, please contact the Parish Office and leave word for Deacon Bob. He will be happy to come visit and determine if it would also be good to receive the anointing of the Sacrament of the Sick; if so, he’ll let Fr Lucio or me know. I have asked Deacon Bob to coordinate this special outreach to the sick. I know there are several good parishioners who are bringing Holy Communion to the homebound already. I ask that all who are doing so, please contact the Parish Office and leave word for Deacon Bob so he can be in touch with you and maintain a list of all those serving and being served. Also, if you are going in for serious surgery or struggling with a chronic or serious illness, please let Fr Lucio or me know so that we can anoint you with the Sacrament of the Sick. Care for the sick is one of the “corporal works of mercy” and another way our parish lives out the Gospel message. Thank you to Deacon Bob and all of you involved in this ministry!

DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PADRE CHUCK Tuvimos una maravillosa liturgia y celebración el Domingo pasado, el Señor Obispo Calvo dirigió el ritual para la instalación de un nuevo Rector y muchos se reunieron para un convivio esa mismaq tarde como una especie de bienvenida formal para el Padre Lucio y para mí. Muchas, muchas gracias a todos los que ayudaron de alguna manera especial en la liturgia, especialmente el diácono Joe quien fue el Maes-tro de Ceremonias, diácono Bob, Anne y Reuben por la música, nuestro sacristán, los servidores duran-te la Misa, por la presencia de los miembros del Consejo Pastoral y Financiero. Gracias especiales a los Caballeros de Colón y a las mujeres de Santo Tomas por proveer la comida, cocinar y la limpieza de tan agradable celebración. Hubo suficiente comida para todos y un espíritu maravilloso. Estoy particular-mente agradecido por la promesa de oración hecha por ustedes, los feligreses, tanto en la Misa como individualmente para mí. Inmediatamente antes de mis notas en el boletín, está la homilía (en inglés) que el Señor Obispo Calvo dio en la Misa el Domingo pasado, recordándonos a todos la importancia de trabajar juntos como una familia parroquial y servir como la Iglesia Madre de la Diócesis. En la catedral se nos encomienda una misión especial a ese respecto. Antes de salir de Carson City, extendí una invi-tación al pueblo de Sta. Teresa a que visiten su Catedral. Tal invitación puede ser extendida a todos los feligreses en la diócesis de Reno. Estamos llamados a darles la bienvenida y a abrir nuestros corazones para recibir a todos los que vienen.
