Welcome to Wakefield Area
News
Easter Message from Bishop Tony
Almost every day in the news we hear about atrocities in various parts of the world; most recently in Egypt, Stockholm, Westminster, in Syria, Iraq, in Afghanistan to name but a few. This Holy Week and Easter many in our world will be saddened because of the death of loved ones, some of whom will have had violent and undignified ends. Many will have no known grave, and others will be brought home to quiet graveyards far from the conflict. Many people will find it hard to find hope.
As we think about Easter, we have to face the brutal realities of the violence and indignity of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. We see all that is good, beaten, broken and battered, and hurriedly buried in someone else's grave. It is indeed hard to find hope.
The Christian faith invites us to different ways of living; loving enemies, praying for those who do evil and hurt without a cause, practicing forgiveness. Jesus in his death on the cross, prayed for his enemies - 'Father forgive them,' he cried.
Jesus challenged the very concept of 'enemy', inviting people to see each other as 'children of the same heavenly Father.' Such an attitude threatens the powerful, and those who seek to divide people from one another on the grounds of race, creed, status or schooling.
Jesus' death was an apparent defeat for God's way of living in the world. If it all ended on Good Friday, despair would be the only option. But Easter day marks out a unique event in the human story; the resurrection of a man from the dead.
Jesus was given back on Easter day, to give us courage to follow him; to risk ourselves, our reputations, even our lives, to demonstrate the radical goodness of God's love for us. There is our hope.
Happy Easter! The Right Reverend Tony Robinson, Bishop of Wakefield

My Faith and Me by Scarlett Doyle
Ever since I was a baby I have been taken to church. Now, at eleven, I still chose to go to church to learn more about God and Jesus each week. Now every week I feel my understanding is growing stronger. A couple of years ago I started serving at Sunday Mass and then with my sister Poppy at benediction as well. After a year of serving I decided I wanted to get more involved in the church, learn more and get confirmed. I went to confirmation classes and got confirmed by Bishop Tony. By the end of the classes I understood more about the church and how things worked. I chose to get confirmed not only to learn and become more involved but also to have a better and stronger relationship with God. Believing in God feels like I always have a friend that I can trust, that would never hurt my feelings, shut me out or betray my trust. I feel like I can talk to him about anything, even stuff I feel I could not tell anybody else. I feel like he understands, will not laugh and will help me and guide me if I needed it. If someone were to tell me I couldn’t go to church anymore I would feel pretty upset. I would be afraid of losing a friend because I wouldn’t see them anymore, afraid of losing my relationship with God or it weakening because I could not go to church anymore I love my faith and I love God. They are a big part of my life and mean a lot to me. Sent on behalf of Revd David Teasdel
IRANIAN CONVERTS, Sent on behalf of Revd David Munby
On Sunday 26th
March Bishop Tony Confirmed 20 of our Iranian converts who had been baptised in the past 12 months. We have now baptised around 80 Iranians in the last 3 years, around 60 of whom have been confirmed. Some of them have powerful testimonies of coming to Christ in Iran through the witness of a Christian friend, attending a secret house church and then being forced to flee the country leaving behind families, houses and careers, when the authorities tracked them down. Now they are at last able to practice their faith without persecution.
We are looking forward to the national Anglican conference for those parishes who are welcoming Iranians into their congregations, details below:-
As you will be aware, some congregations within the Church of England now have significant numbers of Persian members from Iran, the Kurdish areas of Iraq, Afghanistan and beyond – and their presence is a great joy. This has specific implications for clergy, not least the challenges of supporting individuals seeking asylum in the UK on religious grounds, and balancing the pastoral needs of new arrivals with those of the existing congregation. In order to hear from those ministering in this context, and explore how such work might be better resourced and supported, the Church of England’s Presence & Engagement programme is convening a national gathering, open to all Anglican clergy who have welcomed Persians into their churches. Building on work in the Northern Province, this day conference will be an opportunity to meet and learn from one another, share experiences to inform future national work, and attend workshops on a range of key issues. It is our pleasure to invite you to attend this event, which will take place at
St George’s Church in Leeds, on Thursday 15th June 2017. In order to make the day accessible to as many people as possible, the only charge will be a £10 donation to cover catering costs, to be made on the day. However advance registration is essential, and places can be booked online at: www.anglican-ministry-to-persiansjune2017.eventbrite.co.uk. Spaces are limited, so please sign up by 31 May to secure yours. We do hope you are able to join us for what will be an important step towards a Church equipped to offer a warm, sensitive and authentic welcome to Persians in this country. Every blessing, Mark Poulson Secretary for Inter Religious Affairs to the Archbishop of Canterbury and National Inter Religious Affairs Adviser for the Church of England Kat Brealey Presence & Engagement National Programme Coordinator Revd David Munby, St George’s, Barnsley

Dementia Friendly Service Following our first very successful Dementia Friendly Service held just before Christmas, when Bishop Tony came to support us; we were so encouraged by the enthusiastic response from dementia patients, carers, NHS employees and members of our congregation alike. So we have decided to have follow-up services running throughout this year.
Our first service for 2017 “Remembering May Day” will be held in the Village Hall, Hoylandswaine on Monday 1
st May.
This reminiscence service will commence at 1.15pm till 3.30pm. We are glad to include our youngest members of the church in this Service as they will be taking part in a May Day procession which will culminate in the crowning of the Rose Queen. We will provide a picnic style tea including sandwiches, tea cake and sandwich cake. This event is being held to support members of our community who are living with dementia and their families. If anyone is interested in attending please telephone Brenda Young on 01226 763258, thank you. Margaret Robertson, Hoylandswaine St John The Evangelist Church

Saltmine Theatre Company presents ‘Chosen’ The Mothers’ Union Story
Available to book from 13th May – 16th July 2017
Saltmine Theatre Company is delighted to be working in partnership with Mothers Union on this uplifting true story of founder Mary Sumner. We believe God's heart is very much in this production and after discussions with the leadership of the Mothers’ Union, we are proposing a tour of the production around the UK, with our first performance already booked for the Diocese of
Chichester on 13th May 2017. Chosen tells the story of Mary Sumner, who on the birth of her first child discovered the joys and the mammoth challenges of parenthood.
This performance will be approximately one hour in length, which means it could easily form part of a bigger event or conference, or it could be used as a stand-alone event to creatively inform members of the organisation’s history and raise interest in its present work. To host this production you will need: • A performance space of at least 6m wide by 5m deep by 5m high from stage/floor to ceiling. • Enough power to run our sound system through the venue. (Saltmine will provide all technical equipment needed – we just need to be able to plug it in!) • Access to the venue about two and a half hours prior to the show, and for an hour and a half after the show. • A donation of £690 + travel donation (based on mileage). Bookings are taken on a first come, first served basis, subject to the location of the booker. Why not consider booking a performance with other Mothers’ Union groups in your circuit/diocese, sharing the donation and promotion of the performance? For more information or to book your show date, please contact me Joanna Bell on 01384 454807 or on [email protected]
YMCA White Rose are running a learning hub with Care for the Family in Rotherham on: Tuesday May 16th from 6.30-9pm. Aimed at volunteer youth workers, but suitable for anyone who works with children or young people, the Learning Hub will focus on parenting. This might sound like a strange focus on family life for youth workers, but it’s an aspect which we often overlook.
For more information, and to book your place, visit www.billetto.co.uk/Maylearninghub or contact Jon Buckley on 07450 778678 or [email protected].'
We will be looking at:
What is it like being a parent in 2017? What are some of the issues they face?
What are the different styles of parenting, and how does how I was parented affect my work with young people?
How can we support the parents of the young people we work with?
Finally, what is our role as youth workers for young people who don’t have a parent?
PRESS RELEASE: NEW ECUMENICAL BODY FOR WEST YORKSHIRE
The West Yorkshire Ecumenical Council (WYEC) closed on 31st December and was replaced on 1st January 2017 by a new body called West Yorkshire Churches Together (WYCT). The change reflects the desire of the eleven churches to respond to contemporary ecumenical needs in West Yorkshire.
WYEC was launched in 1987, building on existing ecumenical co-operation. It has provided support for Churches Together groups, Local Ecumenical Partnerships and many initiatives in local ecumenism. It has provided opportunities for senior Church Leaders and Denominational Ecumenical Officers to meet together, to further relationships, and to plan strategically together. It has enabled the Church Leaders to be visibly united, speaking with one voice. WYCT will build on the solid foundations laid by WYEC.
The Administrator of WYCT is Rev Nicholas Shields on [email protected] and its new website: westyorkshirechurchestogether.com Revd Nick Shields, Administrator, West Yorkshire Churches Together
COMMUNITY FOUNDATION WAKEFIELD DISTRICT Do you know a local hero??? We are looking for people who have made a difference, who have run/organised activities or contributed in one way or another to helping people achieve their potential (or overcome an impediment) – more than they could have done by themselves.
A decision about the number of awards to be made, or categories involved, will be made once the closing date for nominations has been reached. Nominations must be submitted by 5pm on Monday 17
th April.

At St Catherine’s we are horrified that so many children are reliant on their parents being able to gain immediate access to food aid, but we are also extremely determined to help. We have been visited by representatives of HRH The Duke of York as he and the other members of his Trust consider awarding us his Community Initiative Award.
We are really excited to announce that Minster Law will be covering the cost of the homemade soup, teas and coffees for the next twelve months. It is normal to see service users eat three, four or even five bowls of soup after a night of sleeping on the streets and this provision is currently accessed some 3,000 times a year.
Lidl will be donating excess stock to us starting this Summer, and has already donated towards the purchase of a brand new fridge. We even received a call from Knoxville, Tennessee as KFC wants to donate excess chicken to us on Mondays and Thursdays from its restaurant on Denby Dale Road!
We have also started a new fundraising campaign ... Please fuel our vehicle so it can continue to scour the city for nourishing food: Just £4 will enable us to collect these goods for a single day and you can add an extra 25% for nothing by ticking the Gift Aid box. Please consider supporting us as we look to cover our £1200 fuel bill for the coming 12 months. If you would like to donate materially or financially towards this vital work, please feel free to send me an email or call me on 01924 211130. Your support is making a difference to so many. My volunteers and I witness it every day.

Redundant Hymn Books. St Peter’s Church, Kirk Smeaton has recently been clearing out their storage area. They have about 100 copies of Hymns Ancient and Modern – New Standard version, sixth impression, which are no longer used, and haven’t been for quite some time.
