WELCOME

02 THE FINISHING LINE

However, whilst the outlook remains far from bright, there are rays of light beginning to penetrate the gloom that has held sway over the industry in recent years. In the medium to long term RM&I activity related to carbon emission reduction presents real opportunity for those businesses who can contribute to the decarbonisation of our housing stock. Likewise the need for new infrastructure, especially in the energy sector, presents a further area for growth in the coming years. Whilst competition will undoubtedly be fierce, for those with the aptitude and desire the opportunities are there for the taking.

We must also acknowledge that not everything that has come out of the economic turmoil of the last few years is bad. The need for resource efficiency brought on by recession has imbued into the supply chain an unprecedented focus on collaborative working – integration has become the watchword of the modern construction industry, and long may this continue even when the days of economic hardship are behind us.

The increasing importance of carbon performance for construction products has had a big impact on the supply chain. Keen to ensure that their products deliver against performance promises, manufacturers are becoming increasingly interested in the application of their products. For contractors, this means there is a pressing need to get to grips with the technical aspects of the products they are using, and best practice for installing them – failure to do so will mean missing crucial performance targets and facing remonstration from not only the customer, but from the manufacturer as well. In practice, this means that the distance between manufacturers at one end of the supply chain, and main contractors at the other, has dramatically shortened, new relationships are increasingly being formed between elements of the supply chain that previously had little or no interaction with one another.

The need for cost-efficiency has likewise had a colossal impact on the working of the supply chain. Gone are the days when the default spec is accepted without question – main contractors are becoming increasingly aware that there is a multitude of options out there, and are more than willing to change a specification if a more appropriate and cost-effective solution is available. Value engineering has become the cornerstone of the specification process, and contractors are now eager to draw upon the experience of those around them to find the right product for the job at hand. It is, after all, the quickest and easiest way to make a project more cost-effective.

For SIG, this evolution in the way the different elements of the supply chain interact with one another has made our role even more important, and provided great opportunities for our business. Innovative partnerships such as our groundbreaking Supply Partner Agreement at Southmead Hospital – where SIG acts almost as a ‘value engineering advisor’ to the main contractor Carillion, working across the entire project – is a real-life manifestation of this new way of working which is already delivering across-the-board efficiencies and benefits for all involved.

Of course, we face challenges just like any other business in this industry – however we are also proactively seeking out opportunities. Where work might be drying up in one sector, projects are starting to flow back in to another; and the principles of cost-efficiency and value engineering that our business can deliver remain at the heart of each and every one of them.

There is no escaping the fact that, for a plethora of reasons, we’re still fighting through a tough time for the construction industry particularly with recent announcements that we are now in a double dip recession. The precarious nature of the country’s economic recovery, compounded by the financial instability that grips Europe, means that construction is taking a double hit both from low confidence in the private market, and heavy cuts in public spending.

SIG Distribution, a UK division of SIG plc and with

a turnover of around £700 million, has been

awarded the QiCM accreditation.

Based in Hillsborough, Sheffield, three separate departments were created

in May 2010 to provide more specialised focus within each section of credit

collections, credit services (applications/risk) and legal services.

Simon Johnson, SIG Director of UK Credit Management, says this structural

change led to stronger performances in 2010 and 2011 in all three of these

disciplines: “The QiCM accreditation has enabled SIG to benchmark its robust

procedures and processes against ‘best in class’,” he says, “which provided

interesting comparisons on how other companies addressed certain issues.

“In addition, and probably the most important benefit, was the fact that

the team would meet on a regular basis and debate the key QiCM criteria

and deliberately try to find weaknesses in our existing systems, which led to

important debates and resultant process improvements. An example of this was

the need to create a secondary Credit Induction programme that exceeded the

group standard induction programme for new starters.

“This also had the added benefit of increasing compliance awareness by

using the inductions to highlight compliance issues. SIG views the ICM as a

valuable partner in its long-term credit management strategy and the QiCM

accreditation cements SIG’s desire to implement ‘best practice’.”

CMS Acoustics and Danskin, two of the UK’s market leaders in acoustic

solutions, have merged, forming CMS Danskin Acoustics, the UK’s largest

adding its own unique specialisms, experience and products.

With offices in Scotland, the North of England and the South of England,

CMS Danskin Acoustics is able to provide expertise, innovative products and

outstanding after-sales care to a UK-wide customer base.

And, in this digital age, it goes without saying that a new business needs a new

INDUSTRY NEWS

For the construction industry, the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, poses a host of logistical challenges, from increased demand for public transport and road closures through to security and workforce availability. These problems can all be overcome, but not by burying our heads in the sand, says SIG UK Logistics Director Scot Gerry.

We are being told to expect and prepare for at least 100 days of disruption – no small challenge for companies for which the transporting of materials is the lifeblood of their business.

Transport for London (TfL) and the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), for their part, are taking positive steps to help companies to manage logistical disruption. They cannot, however, do it all for us, and many companies still seem unsure of the path that they need to get set for the Games.

With 27th July looming closer and closer in the diary, it is time for companies to work collaboratively, both with TfL in using the information provided to business, and with partners who have the experience and resources to help them implement a cohesive and effective logistics plan, ahead of the start of the Games:

Be aware, be prepared and take stock of projects coming up between now and end of September.

• Do your detective work! Research where heavy security is likely to impact? Ensure there are no hidden surprises.

• Cross reference delivery routes and transport schedules with published Transport for London information.

• Get your house in order – internal resourcing is likely to be affected with increased commuting times for staff. Logistics personnel should co- ordinate with HR and management to identify potential snag points and possible need for temporary staff.

At SIG, we have set up a project team specifically to deal with the logistical impact of the Olympics. Comprising key transport and warehousing personnel, along with branch and regional managers, this team has been delivering seminars and workshops across the UK, both for internal employees and customers, to ensure that pertinent information from the ODA – and any other intelligence sourced by the project team – is passed on to relevant personnel.

Driven by the project team, all SIG branches are now putting in place specific plans for the duration of the Olympics. These will cover everything from requirements for pre-stocking at customer sites and procedures for arranging out-of-hours deliveries, through to information for staff on how to agree flexible working hours. However, this cannot be done on a reactive basis. Rather all the details must be established in advance of the Games starting otherwise businesses will really struggle to keep up. We can help our customers do this, but we need to work with them sooner rather than later – this early engagement will be vital in making effective plans to support activities.

How to continue to operate efficiently and cost-effectively throughout this busy and challenging time:

• Tackle the challenge head on

• Be informed and proactive

• Find the pressure points

• Have solutions in place

• Obtain full guidance from the ODA/TfL

• Engage with partners like SIG to share knowledge and best practice

Whether that is forming internal teams specifically dedicated to planning for the Olympics, or by engaging with partners like SIG to share knowledge and best practice, the industry needs to be prepared – only then will we be able to continue to operate efficiently and cost-effectively throughout this busy and challenging time.

All SIG branches are putting plans in place that offer their customers a range of options to assist in overcoming the specific, local, logistical challenges and disruption the Olympics will create. Contact your local branch for details.

The works contained in the Gallery are significant not only in terms of their artistic importance, but also their sheer size. The Hepworth Family Gift, for example – a collection of 44 prototype models from the latter part of Barbara Hepworth’s career – are all of sizeable stature, weighing many tonnes in total. Because of the nature of the works within, the construction of the gallery was not simply an exercise in aesthetics and posterity. A great deal of consideration was required to determine how sculptures and other works would be displayed in a way that would be pleasing on the eye without compromising the building’s structural integrity.

A partitioning challenge In a building as important for its wall space as it is floor space, selecting the right partitioning system was a priority. It was clear that specialist expertise would be required.

Sheffield Insulations was brought in to assess how best to tackle this complex partitioning challenge. Stuart Thorpe, Sheffield Insulations Leeds branch manager, explains the problem at hand:

“Rotating exhibitions, changing installations, the hanging and removal of heavy sculptures,” explains Stuart, “all of this would place a great strain on the partitioning used. We knew that a durable, flexible system would be needed to maintain the structural integrity of the rooms within the gallery.”

Stuart visited the site regularly during the planning stage, and conducted a joint on-site review of the gallery’s requirements with partitioning specialists Fermacell and Protektor. Together the review team concluded that a combined Fermacell Protektor system – using partitions from manufacturer Fermacell and metal stud from manufacturer Protektor – would provide a technically superior yet cost-effective solution to the challenge.

“Fermacell and Protektor products combine well together to deliver significant performance improvements,” remarks Stuart. “The greater hanging strength that Fermacell boards provide – over 50kg per fixing – meant that it would be able to cope with the rigours of the environment, and the ease of installation of the combination of Protektor and Fermacell enabled us to finish fitting the system even before the building envelope was complete.

“Furthermore, the system came in at a lower overall cost than many of alternative systems that were on the table.”

A test of logisitics Access posed a further challenge during interior fit out. Located on the Wakefield Waterfront in the centre of the town, site access was highly restricted and, with significant amounts of traffic in the area, especially during rush hours, there was a high possibility of traffic disruption if logistical operations were not carefully managed.

To ensure smooth delivery of the project, Sheffield Insulations Leeds worked closely with the onsite team to devise a logistics plan that took into account all of these local restrictions. To overcome the tight space constraints on-site, the Sheffield Insulations team used specialist delivery vehicles that utilised Moffett mechanical offloading systems and, to minimise impact on local traffic, scheduled for consolidated deliveries to be made to site at 7am every morning.

Sheffield Insulations Leeds transport manager David Taylor, who managed the logistics and delivery of the package, explains: “This meticulous co-ordination of delivery managed to safeguard important health and safety measures on and off site, reduce site traffic and improve efficiency.

“By closely co-ordinating deliveries with the onsite construction team, we avoided construction delays and carefully minimised any disruption to the local road networks.”

Stuart Thorpe concludes: “By ensuring all parts of the supply chain were working closely with one another, we managed to overcome significant structural and logistical challenges, delivering specialist, cost efficient materials within a tight timescale of 12 months – with minimal disruption to the local area.

“We were really pleased to hear that the Gallery won an award for innovative design and are proud to have played a part in delivering this fantastic project.”

Recycling

Waste not, want not …The Environment Agency’s tightening of landfill regulations in 2009, coupled with rising landfill taxes, has placed increasing pressure on the industry for the disposal of waste materials from building sites.Throughout our industry, this process has become very complex, difficult to manage and inevitably expensive. Regulations now demand the segregation of waste materials. This impacts heavily on the supply chain with the onus of responsibility on both main and sub contractors for adopting effective recycling measures.

What does this mean for the dry lining contractor dealing with gypsum waste?Current recycling rates remain low, partly due to difficulties in policing the regulation changes, but mainly because drylining contractors are unsure about the best way to approach gypsum recycling.

Doing nothing is not a viable optionThe regulations state that:

•Gypsumwastethatcannotberecycledissenttolandfill.•Itmustbedepositedinaseparatecellwithnon-biodegradable waste.•Theseproductsmustberecoveredfromsiteandseparated forcollectionanddisposalatgypsumwastedepots throughouttheUK

The separation, weighing, transport and disposal of gypsum products is no small task but contractors are realising that the cost of doing nothing far outweighs the investment required to adopt amore proactive approach.

The proliferation of ‘green legislation’ and increasing pressure industry wide means that the decision makers that matter most to contractors – their customers – are now making decisions with sustainability at the forefront of their minds.

Ultimately, contractors are recognising that the benefits offered by a recycling service go beyond responding to legislative changes. A commitment to carbon reduction is now seen as an important value proposition for a contracting partner, and failure to demonstrate this commitment can be a major barrier to winning business.

SIG – working with our customers to make ameaningful differenceA fundamental part of SIG’s ongoing corporate responsibility and commitment to the environment and sustainability is to take every step possible towards energy conservation.

We recognise the importance of taking early action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as a major factor in combating climate change. Implementation of the SIG’s ‘Low Carbon Business Policy’ has resulted in our achieving the Carbon Trust Standard which is a significant step towards sustainability.

By working together we can help preserve our natural resources and reduce environmental impact.

Cardington Court has been providing residential care services since 1976. However, the 42-bed assisted living establishment, managed by the Bedfordshire Pilgrims Housing Association (BPHA), was beginning to reach the end of its useful lifespan.

BPHA decided that the best option would be to demolish the old care home and build a completely new building for Cardington Court and, after a tender process, contracted SDC Housing to carry out the project. The new building was envisaged to supersede its 1970s predecessor in every way. 55 self-contained apartments with semi private and communal areas were completely transformed to ensure openness and airiness. With a green roof and well insulated rooms, the new Cardington Court would also boast high sustainability and energy efficiency standards.

The dry lining solution used at Cardington Court would be important to create this modern interior environment, and SDC turned to KJW Dry lining to handle the project.

A complex logistical challenge KJW director Kevin Wright quickly recognised that the challenge would not be in finding the right product for the job – it would be in getting the products there in the first place.

According to Wright, the location was ‘extremely restrictive’, both in terms of access to the site itself and the capacity for error when it came to making deliveries.

“The main access to the site is situated at a busy junction on a main road, in a heavily residential area,” explains Wright. “Understandably, access through the main entrance was strictly forbidden by the main contractors in order to minimise impact on residents and the local roads.

“This meant having to access the site via smaller side roads, through a back entrance not designed for large delivery vehicles,” he added. “It was abundantly clear that deliveries would need to be handled with extreme care and consideration.”

KJW recognised that only a competent and widely experienced distributor would be able to deliver against the intricate logistical requirements of the project. Having worked with Sheffield Insulations Bedford branch since he began at KJW over seven years ago, Kevin Wright was certain that they would be the supply partner that could meet the challenging brief.

Handle with care The residential nature of the area meant any and all traffic to and from the site needed to be cleared in advance with SDC’s site agent – any delivery made at an unauthorised time would simply be turned away.

Sheffield Insulations therefore needed to ensure that procedures were put in place so that when products were ordered by KJW, the appropriate clearances were sought and deliveries were made in a timely manner, so as not to disrupt local roads and residents.

The lack of a main access road also meant that Sheffield Insulations were unable to deliver using standard articulated delivery lorries. Instead, they arranged for deliveries to be made by rigid Moffett vehicles. Because these were smaller and more manoeuvrable, they were not only able to navigate smaller back roads to reach alternative entrances; they could enter the site and take deliveries to the exact area where they were needed.

“It meant a change from their normal delivery practice,” said Wright, “but by adopting a flexible and accommodating approach, Sheffield

Insulations were actually able to improve our efficiencies by taking products straight to the teams that needed them.”

Taking stock The logistical challenges were made all the more pertinent by the fact that the on-site teams often required products to be delivered in relatively small batches, on a regular basis. Many of the metal partitioning products needed for the dry lining package, however, were not normally stocked by the nearest branch – and when strict procedures need to be followed and all deliveries required prior clearance, this posed a serious problem.

According to Wright, however, Sheffield Insulations pre-cut non-stock lengths of metal in large quantities, and stored them at their nearest Bedford branch – ready for rapid delivery whenever needed.

“This allowed us to make relatively small orders at any one time, meaning time and resource was not wasted on managing stock on site, increasing our own operational efficiency.

The right supply partner ‘the key to success’ “When it comes to a project that has such complex and challenging parameters,” explains Wright, “you need a distributor that will do everything they can to meet these requirements. In this respect, I’ve put my trust in Sheffield Insulations from day one – and they’ve never let me down.

“The project was all about flexibility, at the end of the day,” Wright notes, “and the key to its success was having the knowledge and experience to know what was possible and how it could be achieved – this is where Sheffield Insulations add true value to a contract.”

For some projects, the main challenge for dry lining contractors is not the decision as to which product to specify, or meeting technical performance requirements – it is ensuring that these products get to site in the first place. Sheffield Insulations helped customer KJW Dry lining overcome a series of logistical challenges to deliver a difficult project on time, and on budget...

TENON PARTITIONS... CLEARLY LEADING THE WAY WITH vITRAGE & vITRAGE (db)Tenon Vitrage is a double or single glazed partition system that combines function with the clear, aesthetic benefits of seamless glazing.

Incorporating a minimum number of aluminium framing sections, Vitrage provides an office divide that allows unhindered vision whilst maintaining the privacy of individual offices.

Manifestation can be added to comply with building regulations, highlighting the presence of the partition, creating an individual design or incorporate corporate logos or themes. Depending on the height of the partition required, 10mm or 12mm glass can be supplied along with frameless glass doors. Alternatively, glass or timber doors can be supplied in aluminium doorframe profiles.

Conversion posts allow for both Vitrage and Vitrage (dB) to integrate with 77mm Tenon Fire and Sound and both systems can be supplied in a wide range of profile colour options.

TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS

By their very nature, steel framing systems offer the building team a host of benefits when compared to other construction methods. Key amongst these are versatility in design and application, potential for bespoke components at a reasonable cost, enhanced productivity on site, reduced construction costs and the ability to satisfy the principles of off-site production and ‘just in time’ delivery essential to modern methods of construction as well as those of environmental responsibility through cost of transport and recycling.

Whilst a building project will derive many cost and time saving efficiencies simply by opting for lightweight steel framing, whether structural or infill systems, selecting the right system and supplier will multiply the benefits.

Naturally, the performance, quality and ease of installation of the product itself will be important in the decision-making process, but adopting a ‘complete system’ approach to system and supplier selection can make a real difference to the benefits that steel framing delivers. Taking a wider view of the design, technical and sales support offered by a manufacturer, as well as the accessories available, will maximise these benefits for the entire construction team and ultimate client.

From the design perspective, using a manufacturer with the right skills, resources and experience can

provide a project with economic solutions through value engineered design.

Value-engineering involves the consideration of all of a project’s requirements to develop a cost-efficient design. Technical skills and expert knowledge of product application enable the manufacturer’s design team to incorporate economic solutions into the scheme without compromising on the building’s functionality, appearance or performance. Typically, these might include improved component design, reduced steel content and more efficient installation techniques. Involving the manufacturer at the earliest possible stages will maximise these benefits and it is an approach which has worked for numerous projects.

When it comes to installation, fully detailed drawings and a comprehensive range of system accessories, as well as the ability to design and manufacture bespoke components, assure quick, safe and easy erection. Expert sales and technical support at every stage enhance the process, whilst manufacturer’s training courses assure the highest level of workmanship on site and underpin the manufacturer’s comprehensive design warranty and professional indemnity schemes.

Simplifying the installation process further to improve speed and safety on site, Metsec has recently introduced a colour coding system to its SFS site fixed framing system.

Simple in concept, yet extremely effective in application, the system uses colours to identify the different gauges of SFS section. The system is introduced at the design stage, where sections are colour coded on the project’s drawings. The same colour codes are then applied to the corresponding sections during manufacture.

When the SFS sections are delivered to site, installation operatives can quickly and easily identify the sections against the drawings by matching colours, making the whole process more efficient and less liable to error.

Initiatives such as this demonstrate the importance of considering not just the steel framing product, but the entire package offered by the manufacturer. Taking a ‘complete system’ approach can pay dividends.

COMPLETE SYSTEM DELIvERS bENEFITSThe modern construction industry is faced with many challenges, not least of which is the need to improve productivity whilst maintaining site safety. It is this key objective that manufacturers of lightweight steel framing systems need to bear in mind when developing their products; quite simply, how can they offer the combination of product, accessories and service that helps both main contractors and sub-contractors to operate profitably and safely.

THE FINISHING LINE 11

What’s your background in the industry? Since starting out as a Sales Executive for SIG plc over 23 years ago, bar a brief misguided foray into working for another distributor for two years, I’ve been here ever since! During that time I’ve certainly seen a lot of change in the industry, but what has always been clear to me is that SIG is in a class of its own. There is no other distributor out there who can compete with SIG in terms of the size and range of stock available, fleet capacity and customer service – all of which make SIG a market leading distributor. I’m now Divisional Dry Lining Manager, covering the whole of the south east.

What’s your favourite part of the job? Nothing gives me a greater sense of achievement than building up productive working relationships with customers to not only help them win business, but also provide them with support throughout the lifetime of a project; from initial tender through to delivery. Part of the SIG ethos is that our hard work doesn’t stop when the client wins the job – rather we aim to add value at every point in the project, whether it’s by offering K10 specifications and warranties on products during specification, or by providing waste management solutions during construction works.

From a personal perspective, I love working in a job that allows me to get out and about. I spend a good four days of the week visiting customers and sites – it’s great for me, as it gives me the opportunity to really get to know their day-to-day operations and recognise the areas where we can support and add value.

What are the upcoming challenges for the south east? With the Olympics nearly upon us, we are focused on helping customers to prepare and manage their logistics during what will undoubtedly be a testing time for the south east. This includes working with them to identify what contracts are coming up, where those sites will be and how they might be impacted by the Games.

With early engagement and advanced planning, however, companies can put in place effective plans to minimise any potential pinch points – and we are helping them to do so. We have a project team in place whose role is to deliver seminars and workshops across the UK to offer advice on the logistical impact of the Olympics.

What’s more, our branches are implementing specific plans to ensure that the period during the Games runs as smoothly as possible. As part of this, we are checking requirements for pre-stocking at customer sites, formalising procedures for arranging out-of-hours deliveries and providing staff with information on how to agree flexible working hours. These measures will ensure that our customers stay ahead of the game.

So where do you foresee growth in the south east – where are the opportunities? There’s no denying that it’s still tough out there, but there are signs that the market is starting to pick up, and there are some exciting opportunities appearing on the horizon.

Obviously, all the talk of the moment is around the Olympics. While most of the work on the Olympic Village itself has already been completed, we should still see an influx of new work once the Games draw to a close as these developments are modified to meet future requirements.

Aside from the Olympics, the Mayor of London has announced a £103 million fund for 2,700 new homes across the capital as part of the Get Britain Building programme. Couple this with other construction projects coming up, such as a number of student accommodation refurbishment projects in the south east, we are definitely seeing more new work coming in. There are undoubtedly opportunities out there for those prepared to work hard and fight for them.

‘IN THE HOT SEAT’The Finishing Line talks to Divisional Dry Lining Manager, Andy Hopgood, to find out more about his role and how the sector is shaping up in the south east...
