Vietnam is situated in South - East Asia with its main land lying between approximatelynorth parallels 80-230 and east meridians 1020-1090 . It has a territory of 331,000 km2 and apopulation of 83 mil. It takes the form of the stretching S with the distance of 1650 kmbetween the two extreme latitudes and a coastal line of 3260 km. The country’s topographyshows that its three-quarters are mountains and hills. The Vietnamese climate is of thetropical and subtropical type. It differs considerably through regions owing to differences oflatitudes & various relieves. There exist two seasons: the dry season (from November toAvril in general, from February to August in the Central region) and the rainy one (in the resttime). The temperature changes in summer & winter are evident in the North, where thedifference reaches 30oC, but 7oC only in the South. Le Vietnam est un pays d'Asie du Sud-Est. Il occupe une superficie de 331.690 km² pourenviron 85 millions d'habitants. Les coordonées terrestres sont approximativement 102o-109o

longitude est & 8o-23o latitude nord. Il a la forme d'un S étiré, dont les extrémités seraientdistantes de 1650 km & la frontière maritime de 3260 km. Les zones de montagne et dehauts plateaux occupent les deux tiers du territoire. Le climat vietnamien est de type tropicalet subtropical. Il diffère considérablement selon les régions en raison des différences delatitude et du relief varié. Hanoi estimated population 3.4 mil. (2007), is the capital of Vietnam. It is located on theright bank of the Red River in the North. In 1010 claiming to have seen a dragonascending the Red River, the King named the old citadel as “Th ng Long ( AscendingDragon) ”. This name still used poetically to this day. As the capital of Vietnam foralmost a thousand years, Hanoi is considered to be the cultural centre of Vietnam,where every dynasty has left behind their imprint. Even though some relics have notsurvived through wars and time, the city still has many interesting cultural and historicmonuments for visitors and residents alike. Hanoi hosts more cultural sites than any cityin Vietnam, including over 600 pagodas and temples. A city between the rivers, builtfrom lowland, Hanoi has many scenic lakes and sometime is called "city of lakes". Hanoihas the highest Human Development Index among the cities in Vietnam. Thoughrepresenting only 3.6 percent of the country's population and 0.3 percent of the nationalterritory. Hanoi contributes 15 percent to the national GDP. The economic structure alsounderwent important shifts, with tourism, finance, and banking now playing anincreasingly important role. Together with economic growth, Hanoi's appearance hasalso changed significantly, especially in recent years. Hanoï a estimé la population 3.4 millions (2007), est le capital du Vietnam. Il est situésur la banque droite du fleuve rouge dans le nord. En 1010 prétendant avoir vu undragon monter le fleuve rouge, le roi a appelé la vieille citadelle en tant que "ThangLong (Dragon Croissant)". Ce nom utilisé toujours poetically à ce jour. Comme capitaldu Vietnam pendant presque mille années, Hanoï est considéré comme le centreculturel du Vietnam, où chaque dynastie a laissé leur impression. Mean annual rainfall is about 2,000mm) but about 75% acumulates in only threemonths (more than 30% usually in only one peak month). The mean annual runoff totals880 billion m3 (ranking 12th in the world), of which 70% is generated from abroad. As forcharacteristics of topography and river basins, Vietnam is considered to be composedof three regions. Almost North Vietnam belongs to the Red River System Basin of87,000 km2 with, in which the Delta is of 16,654 km2 only. Central Vietnam stretchingbetween 11o - 20o parallels composes of a very narrow land strip between mountainsand sea and the South - West highland. Rivers therein are separate with big slope. TheSouth Vietnam includes the Dong_Nai River Basin (44,100 km2) and the downstreamMekong Delta of 39,000 km2 (5% of the whole basin) with a huge water amount about500 billion m3 (more than 60% of total runoff of the country).The mountainous terrain, especially in the North and the Central regions, offerssubstantial potential for water storage. Reservoirs in Vietnam are of two categories, inwhich the first ones especially for energy and the other multipurpose reservoirs forcombination of flood mitigation, water supply, irrigation and power generation. More than2500 lakes (storage volume less than 5 million m3) and 500 big reservoirs have beenbuilt. There are 180 large dams (25 dams 60 m or higher, 5 dams higher than 100m) incompletion & under construction. Hydro power capacity is 4801MW in operation in 2007,5422 MW under construction and will be 15383 MW in near future.
