WELLINGTON AFC Club History

Formed in 1892 we are proud to be an FA Charter Standard Community Club. Initially the Club played in leagues based around Taunton and Tiverton. In the early 1960s it gained promotion to the Somerset Senior League and succeeded in achieving Western League status in 1978 which has been retained ever since, making the Club one of the League’s longest continuously serving members. The First Team entered the Western League in the First Division in 1978/79 season and has played at Premier Division level from 1981/82 to 1984/85 and 2008/09 to 2010/11. The team were promoted as First Division Champions at the end of the 2016/17 season. In their first season back in the in Premier Division the team finished a creditable 15th, they also reached the semi-final of the Somerset Premier Cup losing 4-1 away to Southern League Paulton Rovers. Last season the team finished in 16th place but are hoping to improve on this in the forthcoming season. All other seasons were played at Division One level. The Club’s Reserve side play in the Devon and Exeter League Division One. Having finished eighth for two seasons, unfortunately, the team struggled during the 2017/18 season and last season improved to once again finish in eighth place and will play at the same level this year. Having played in the Devon and Exeter League for a number of seasons the A Team transferred to Division Three of the Taunton Saturday League last season where they finished a very creditable third and could be promoted to Division Two for the forthcoming season. The Club’s Ladies side finished ninth in the Somerset County Women’s League First Division last season but, with the introduction of new players are hoping to improve this season. The team play a full role in both the playing and non-playing aspects of the club. This season the Club will be running 21 teams in its Youth and Mini Sections. These teams see both boys and girls playing from the age of eight right through to eighteen. The Club also has three Disability teams. Six of the Youth Teams won the Sportsmanship Awards for their Age Groups last season and the Disability Teams won the Somerset FA Award for Disability Club of the Year. During the last year the Club launched its new website – www.wellingtonafc.co.uk and is making full use of its Facebook and Twitter accounts which have all proved very successful.

We continue to work with the local Council’s and Wellington Sports Federation on the Taunton Deane Pitch Strategy which will hopefully result in the Club moving to a larger ground and bring the majority of football pitches in the town to one site. Outside of its core footballing activities the Club is home to several darts and skittles teams and it runs a full programme of social events for members and non-members alike. The Function Room and Lounge are available for hire. (Please contact the Clubhouse Manager – Jenny Oxby on 01823 665410 for details)

MATCH REPORTS

TOOLSTATION WESTERN LEAGUE – PREMIER DIVISION WELLINGTON 1 3 WESTBURY UNITED

Wellington remain in the relegation zone after an agonising home defeat by mid-table Westbury United on 4th January. The visitors from Wiltshire had won 5-0 in the first meeting between the sides and, although Wellington showed more application in the return, they still completed the double. Westbury started brightly and held the upper hand early on but Wellington gradually got into the game and it looked like half-time would be reached goalless until late drama before the break. Visiting striker Sam Jordan was running away from goal when he was brought down in the box by Josh Pearson and Callum Demkiv blasted home the resulting penalty. Both sides created openings in the second half but it was Westbury who got the all-important second goal after 66 minutes … and again it was from the penalty spot. This time, Jake Horsey was the offender as he brought down Demkiv who picked himself up to send keeper Tom Welch the wrong way to double his tally. That left Wellington with a mountain to climb but they reduced the arrears four minutes later when Charlie Dodd wriggled into space just outside the box and fired home a low drive past Edward Baldy. That gave the home side a glimmer of hope and they came so close to an equaliser with ten minutes remaining. The talented Joe Wylie fired across goal and, when the ball came out to Ian Bellinger, his effort was bundled off the line by a visiting defender. Football can be a cruel game and, just as it looked like Wellington might snatch a valuable point, Westbury broke up field from a corner to seal their victory with a neat finish by Joe Stradling.

BRIDPORT v WELLINGTON

Unfortunately the First team had a wasted journey to Bridport on Tuesday, 7th January, when the referee, Martin Peters decided that the pitch was unsafe to be played on and cancelled the match at very short notice. The fixture, which was originally scheduled for Boxing Day will now be played on Tuesday 28th January with a 7.45pm kick-off.

CHIPPING SODBURY 3 1 WELLINGTON

Wellington failed to capitalise on an impressive first half display as they lost out in their basement battle at Chipping Sodbury. Tim Legg’s side played their best football since he took over in the opening 45 minutes only to fade after the break with the home side coming from behind to clinch the points. Having lost central defender Tom Stone to university commitments, Legg drafted in Mike Mullen for his full debut and also introduced striker Kyle Bassett, who has started his second spell at the club having been prolific in the Devon League this season. Both players fitted in immediately and played their part in a dominant Wellington performance up to half-time. They took a deserved lead after 23 minutes as a flowing move ended with George Sinnott pulling the ball back for Harry Hamblin to finish clinically. Despite going close on several occasions, that goal was all they had to show for their efforts and their inability to put the game beyond Chipping Sodbury’s reach proved crucial. Although the visitors started the second half brightly with both Bassett and Sinnott going close, they then lost their way and found themselves pegged back in the final third of the pitch for the rest of the game. Defender Luke Burman equalised with a low drive from 25 yards after 69 minutes and then always looked the most likely winners. After Chipping Sodbury sub Dan Brown had hit the underside of the bar with a cracking shot, they took a 75th minute lead when a high cross came out to Jack Moore who smacked it back into the net. They then sealed the points with four minutes remaining, Brown slipping the ball through for Jack Parker to slot past keeper Tom Welch. The only consolation for Wellington was that other results went in their favour but they know their winless run must end soon if they are to claw themselves out of trouble.

TODAY’S VISTORS BITTON

Bitton AFC were founded in 1892. They play at the Recreation Ground, which is on the outskirts of the village of Bitton, on the A420 between Bath and Bristol. This has been their home since the club was formed. There is very little history of the club before the Second World War. From 1945 up until the late 1980's they ran teams in the Bristol and District Football League with limited success. In the 1989/90 season the club 1st team played in the Senior Division of the Bristol and District Football League. After winning promotion two years in succession the 1st team started the 1991/92 season playing in the Premier Division of the Bristol Premier Combination. Season 1994/95 was to prove one of the club's most memorable, winning the GFA Senior Amateur Cup and finishing Runners-Up in the Bristol Premier Combination, achieving promotion to the Gloucestershire County League. Season 1996/97 saw the club reach the GFA Challenge Trophy Final, losing narrowly to Mangotsfield United. The club also finished Runners Up in the Gloucestershire County League and were promoted to the Western League First Division. After 7 seasons in the First Division, the Club achieved its highest position during the 2003/04 season, when finishing Runners Up and gaining promotion to the Western League Premier Division. Upon becoming an established Western League Premier Division Club, Bitton AFC were crowned Champions in 2008/09, whilst Winning the GFA Challenge Trophy in the same season. Despite winning the league then, and earning Runners Up in 2010/11, Bitton were unable to gain promotion, as the ground facilities did not satisfy Southern League standards. Over the last decade the club has matched its playing performance with many off the pitch developments. A stand seating 50 was built. Covered accommodation for 150 was erected. In February 2001 floodlighting was installed which is up to Conference standard. 2004 saw the building of a new dressing room block, including a kitchen and boardroom and also a floodlight multiple use games area. During the summer of 2011 Chairman John Langdon invested significantly into the clubs facilities to ensure they met Southern League standards should Bitton qualify for promotion in the future. The wooden clubhouse was demolished and a new building erected, whilst arrangements were made to accommodate turnstiles required for

Page 15: WELCOME TO THE PLAYING FIELD · WELLINGTON AFC Club History Formed in 1892 we are proud to be an FA Charter Standard Community Club. Initially the Club played in leagues based around

the next level. This investment continues to demonstrate the clubs drive and ambition to push for promotion to the Southern League. The Reserve Team play in the Premier Division of the Bristol Premier Combination whilst the 'A' team (3rd's) play in Division 1 of the Bristol and District League. Bitton Ladies were formed at the start of the 2007/2008 season and play in the Gloucestershire County Womens Football League. Bitton AFC also run an impressive Youth structure for boys & girls, with teams ranging from Under 6's right through to Under 18's. Last season the club celebrated 125 in the community. Dan Langdon was appointed manager with Steve Jones as his assistant. Sadly at the end of the season it was decided to withdraw the reserve side from the Bristol Premier Combination League leaving the club with one senior side but increased the 18s age group to two sides.

EXTRACT FROM TOOLSTATION BULLETIN

12th January 2020

Shepton Mallet have now won six of their last seven in the league, and are up to fourth spot after coming from behind to beat Bridgwater Town 2-1. It was Town who took the lead at Fairfax Park, with David O’Hare scoring after 20 minutes to set his team up for a third consecutive home win. However, Shepton are full of confidence right now, and they managed to bring the game level midway through the second half when Nathan Legge scored his first for the club after being slipped in by Craig Loxton. With their tails up, the away side kept up the pressure, and following a driven cross from Asa White, the ball eventually fell to Daryl Charman who scrambled the ball home from close range to complete the turnaround. At the opposite end of the table, Chipping Sodbury rebounded from last week’s heavy defeat by claiming a 3-1 win at home to Wellington. Both teams started the day in the bottom three, and it was Wellington who looked set to climb the table after Harry Hamblin had given them a 23rd minute lead. With less than a quarter of the game remaining, the Sods were still trailing, but managed to produce an excellent 20 minutes to turn the game on its head. Luke Burnham was the first to break through, with a 25-yard drive levelling affairs, before Jack Moore gave them the lead a couple of moments later. With time running out, Chipping Sodbury added a late third through Jack Parker to give them three home wins on the bounce in all competitions. In Bath, Westbury United made it back-to-back away wins to start the new year, after a quick-fire double from Callum Demkiv saw them beat basement-boys Odd Down 2-0. Street’s encouraging start to 2020 continued away at Cribbs, where they gained revenge on a defeat to the same opponents earlier this season by winning 4-2 at the Lawns. The visitors won both halves by two goals to one, with Callum Thompson following up his midweek winner with a goal-scoring brace. Kameron Andrews and Oli Hebbard also scored for the Somerset side, with Cory Simpson pulling a goal back for Cribbs who have now incredibly lost 4-2 in all three of their fixtures since Boxing Day. Third-place Exmouth Town defeated Roman Glass St George 2-1 thanks to first half goals from James Richards and Jordan Harris, while a 30th minute effort from Jordan Annear led Tavistock to a 1-0 win away at Bridport.

MACRON DEVON & EXETER LEAGUE DIVISION 1

WELLINGTON RESERVES 1 1 EXWICK VILLA 2NDS After their previous poor home showing against Exwick, the Reserves knew changes would be afoot. With changes to personnel and formation, the players had to be concentrated and focused. With the slope and wind behind them, they knew their visitors would struggle to get out of their half. Tough tackling veteran, Matthew Holmes set the tempo early on with some trademark crunching tackles. The Reserves high work-rate was pressuring Alphington into hurried clearances. The team were up for the fight, quick into challenges and visibly enjoying winning the physical battle. Chances were coming, Liam Thorne released Ollie Nott early on and as he bore down on goal and pulled the trigger an untimely bobble meant his usually reliable shooting misfired and the shot went wide. Tireless Liam Thorne was a constant thorn in the Alphington defence and should have been awarded a penalty on 25 minutes, when he was unceremoniously bulldozed by the away keeper as he tried to convert a cross from the left. Wellington eventually took a deserved lead on 33 minutes. The impressive Tom Davies scored with a remarkable header. A free kick high on the right was met by Davies who flicked a back header high over the keeper, leaving him no chance. A well-deserved goal, for Davies and the team. More opportunities came Wellington's way, but the deserved second goal just would not arrive. The half ended with the Reserves 1-0 up. The wind was still blowing strongly for second half and Alphington took their turn to use it to their advantage. In a reversal of the first half, Wellington were now defending a lot more. Rob Hall was being called into action more, but kept his goal well. Alphington were having more possession and creating more but Wellington's hardworking back three were tremendous. Davies, Fleet and Danny Nicholls embraced the battle. Counter attacking was the way forward for Welly and a second goal would have sealed it. But the few clear chances that came their way were wasted or rushed. Alphington finely got a clear chance to equalise on 71 minutes. A penalty, clear and definite was awarded and dispatched past the hand of Hall. There weren't any further clear cut chances and a draw was a fair result as the final whistle blew.

All in all a very good and improved performance from their previous outing. Special mentions for young Robbie Broomhead and Nichols who both contributed well and continue to impress, Liam Thorne for his selfless front line running and MOM Davies.

INVEST SOUTHWEST TAUNTON SATURDAY LEAGUE

DIVISION 2 WELLINGTON A 2 0 STAPLEGROVE CRUSADERS

In what could be one of the most significant results of the season, Wellington defeated title challengers Staplegrove to maintain their position at the top of the division at the halfway point. The significance of this result should not be underestimated. Wellington had no fewer than nine players unavailable and fielded a 12 man squad against a full strength Staplegrove who, aware of the situation, may well regret approaching the game with a little too much complacency. Wellington made the perfect start when Tom Scarlett made himself free at the back post to turn in a flicked on header from Jordan Sellick. From that moment, the Tangerine Army had something to protect and every player put their body on the line to shut out an increasingly frustrated Staplegrove. Man of the match Sully Harlow was superb and saved everything that came his way including a number of one-on-one situations. In front of him, the back four won every header and cleared every second ball including league debutant Harry Nixon. The midfield were tireless throughout and well supportive of each other. And finally, the attack refused to give up creating opportunities. Cameron Perry Jones left his marker for dead on numerous occasions, Scarlett led the line with a fearless attitude and threw himself into and over everything, and Jordan Sellick was continuously a threat on the left, so much so that it would be Sellick who was well placed to slot home the second goal of the game in the middle of the second half. At 2-0, Wellington refused to become complacent themselves and did everything to ensure the keeping of a clean sheet. To this extent, the closest either side came to scoring the third goal was Sellick’s header hitting the post towards the very end. The final whistle was met with relief and a huge sense of pride. This was a Wellington side who fought for the shirt and well deserve their lead at the top of the division.
