The end of the year is upon us! Who would have thought or could believe that this would be the case. It really does seem like yesterday that we were in the middle of the club refurbishments but that was nearly a year ago that we actually finished.

Development and change and growth however continue on. Sadly, in this fast paced and competitive world especially post GFC, standing still means you are falling behind. Over the past few months the Club sector of hospitality has been hit with a number of unwelcome increased expenses.

We have seen the effect of the ‘carbon tax’ since July with over $100,000 of extra cost being added annually to our electricity bill. The new State government announced an increase in gaming levies that will see the club pay in excess of an additional $150,000 per annum. Combined with increased federal wage awards, insurances, rents and the general cost of living increases especially in food, we face over $500,000 in increased operating expenses for this financial year. Not something that is easily dealt with in this current environment as we are loathe to pass these costs on but in avoiding this we face the challenge of ensuring the long term viability of this organisation, which outside of council and government services is the largest local employer in the old Pine Rivers Shire.

Those are just some of the challenges facing our industry and specifically facing your club.

In the pipeline for the club over the coming months and years are developments such as developing Surreal so that we can offer a wider range of meals especially hot ones, improving our kitchen facilities to ensure faster service to the hugely successful Char, developing additional car parking around the club to cope with the demand for access to the club at peak periods, as well as looking at developing other areas of the club which lie under utilised day in day out into areas that we can use to improve member facilities, including a bigger and better sports bar, lounge and additional casual dining. While much of this may be some time in the future, it is indicative of the fact that we never stop to look at the possibilities for the future, never stop planning and asking ‘what if’ in order to ensure that this club continues to grow to meet the needs of our local community.

As part of our ongoing commitment to you our members, November sees the introduction of Galaxy Rewards. This programme delivers to you the value of being a member of this club, identifying and delivering to you member only discounts across the club in food and in beverages and with special invitation only offers throughout the

year and ongoing. We have been developing towards the introduction of this over the past few months through introducing the need for the use of your members card – there is immense value in that card so don’t leave home without it (to steal someone else’s line!)

And there’s so much on in the club over the next couple of months so plan now!

Melbourne Cup is only a few days away so whether you are attending our Melbourne Cup ticket only function or just enjoying the entertainment throughout the club on the day it will be a fun day and good luck with those picks!

Also don’t miss out on the Monday night Calcutta – get a few friends together and buy some raffle tickets to get a horse in the draw and have a bit of fun to get you in the mood before the Cup itself.

Many of our members know Suzi and Matt. They will know them both because over 10 years ago this love story began at Norths Leagues and Services Club. During 2001 Suzi was working as a promotions and administration attendant. Twelve months later Matt joined the Norths team from 2002 and was working at Reception while he studied at university. In January 2003 Matt and Suzi decided that the interest they took in each other should be made official and they started dating.

Love Story at NorthsFrom there, Matt went on to work in other industries after finishing university, whilst Suzi (our current HR Manager) continued on at Norths. Whilst their professional lives grew and blossomed, so did their relationship.In August 2010 Matt took Suzi on an amazing holiday where he proposed and of course the answer was yes!The following two years consisted of careful planning for their special day and on the 1st of September 2012 the couple finally became husband and wife.

White Balloon Day is a Bravehearts signature event held annually during Child Protection Week to raise awareness about child sexual assault and help empower survivors to break their silence. This year White Balloon Day was on Friday 7 September and $200,000 was raised from over 700 White Balloon Day events held throughout Australia. This money will support education, prevention and counselling programs for children who have been sexually assaulted.Norths Leagues & Services Club filled the club and outside areas with white balloons to raise awareness for Bravehearts.

Salvo’s Christmas Appeal at NorthsChristmas is a happy time for most but spare a thought for those families who won’t have the happiness and joy of opening presents this year.

The Norths Salvation Army Christmas appeal has been running for several years in which time hundreds of toys have been donated for children who are disadvantaged.This year we hope our generous members will continue their tradition of giving to this worthwhile cause.Members and guests are invited to place toys under the Christmas tree in the foyer of the club.The tree will be up until the 14th of December before the toys are collected by the Pine Rivers Salvation Army and distributed to disadvantaged children in the community.Your support this year will be most appreciated.

From 1964 until 1966, the United States of America and the rest of the world couldn’t get enough of British pop groups. What began with The Beatles takeover of America set off by their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, soon opened the door for fellow Liverpool band also managed by the mercurial Brian Epstein, Gerry and The Pacemakers led by Gerry Marsden to follow, and in the sixties what was big in British and American pop culture soon spread down under to Australia.

Fifty years ago in 1959 Gerry Marsden formed the group with his brother, Fred, Les Chadwick and Arthur McMahon. They rivalled the Beatles early in their career, playing in the same areas of Hamburg, Germany and at the famed Cavern Club in Liverpool, England.The band was the second to sign with Brian Epstein, who later signed them with Columbia Records (a sister label to The Beatles label Parlophone under EMI). They began recording in early 1963 with “How Do You Do It?”, a song written by Mitch Murray that Adam Faith had turned down and one that The Beatles chose not to release (they did record the song but chose to release their own song “Please Please Me”). The song was produced by George Martin and became a number one hit in the UK, until being replaced at the top by “From Me to You”, The Beatles’ third single.

Gerry and The Pacemakers’ next two singles, Murray’s “I Like It” and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, both also reached number one in the UK Singles Chart. Never before had the first three singles by a performer all reached the top spot (the feat would not be bettered until The Spice Girls did it in the 90’s). In the halcyon days of 1963 Gerry and The Pacemakers enjoyed the status of being one of Britain’s most popular bands and were on tour with The Beatles as well as topping bills in their own right. “You’ll Never Walk Alone” had been a favourite of Gerry Marsden’s since seeing Carousel growing up. It soon became the signature tune of Liverpool Football Club. To this day, the song remains a football anthem, there and elsewhere, a phenomenon due to Gerry Marsden, rather than its Broadway composers.

Gerry and the PacemakersGerry still tours regularly in the UK where he headlines 60’s tours at such prestigious venues as The Royal Albert Hall and London Palladium, the US where he is still a popular draw-card in the Casinos and State Fairs, Asia and Australia where he tours now more than ever.

Gerry and The Pacemakers will present their farewell tour “You’ll Never Walk Alone” at Norths on Saturday 2 March 2013. It promises to be a trip down memory lane and the end of an era for one of the British Invasion’s most enduring artists. Tickets are on sale now from the club’s reception and cost $60 per person.
