Fine Tune Your Interview Skills
Now that you have built the perfect resume, it is time to increase your marketability by fine tuning your
interview skills!
What do Recruiters Want?
Recruiters coming to Carlson tell us that the most successful candidates do three things during their interviews:
They demonstrate focus and passion. They know what they want to do.
They have knowledge about the company and the industry.
They have outstanding communication skills.
• Am I communicating to recruiters that I am focused and passionate about my area of expertise?
• Know your Story! Recruiters will be asking why you chose HRIR as your graduate degree and field of interest. Prepare your story and deliver it clearly and confidently.
Ask Yourself...
Industry & Company Information
• Recruiters are also looking for candidates who express interest in their specific industry and are knowledgeable about their company. The worst thing you can do is walk into an interview without having done research.
• How do you gain company and industry information?

Tell me about yourself. How did you decide on your career path? What leadership roles have you held? Why did you pick your area of concentration? What courses did you like best/least and why? What are you looking for in a job? How would you compare us with our competitors? How would you describe your area of concentration? How does your education relate specifically to this
position? Why did you decide to seek a job with us?

The Ultimate Recruiting Playbook

Here are some tips for the Ultimate Recruiting Playbook:
Companies that recruit on campus adhere to rigid schedules-but that’s no reason you should. “A month before they hit campus, write a letter or make a call to each company’s rep to introduce yourself,” says Antoinette Chambers, director of MBA career services at the University of Tennessee. “They’ll be impressed with your interest and initiative, and when the recruiters show up, I guarantee they’ll remember your name”.

If you don’t immediately know the answer to a question during a case interview, look down while you think of something to say. The natural tendency is to look up, but politicians and other seasoned public speakers are coached to stare at the floor. It gives the appearance of being deep in thought.
