JOYFUL LIVING GRATEFUL GIVING RENEWAL/ALEGRE VIVIR AGRADABLE DANDO

RENOVACIÓNBeginning today and continuing over the next several weeks, we will have a series of presentations on the various types of stewardship. They include Treasure, Vocations, Faith, Prayer, and Earth. We have received many gifts from God and stewardship is an expression of thanks to God for those gifts. As stewards, we are called to use these gifts to further God’s purpose. In Saint Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians, he says, “Let me say this much: He who sows sparingly will reap sparingly and he who sows bountifully will reap bountifully. Everyone must give according to what he has inwardly decided; not sadly, not grudgingly, for God loves a cheerful giver. God can multiply His favors among you so that you may always have enough of everything and even a surplus for good works.” As we continue our stewardship journey, may we remember this message and thank God by prayerfully sharing our time, talents, and treasures.

FROM THE PRIEST:Fr. VinceIn this weekend’s gospel, we hear the parable of the landowner and the steward. It sounds like the steward is in big trouble with the landowner, but why is Jesus praising him?The steward misused the landowner’s money and he was responsible for taking care of his property. The steward probably overcharged the tenants for their use of land and kept more than his share of profit. When the landowner found out about this, he fired the steward, leaving him for broke. Before people found out that the steward was fired, the steward made a deal with the tenants. The steward “discounted” their debts so it made the landowner looked very generous, while the steward was probably using his own money to pay the “discounted” amount that the tenants didn’t have to pay anymore! When the landowner found out, he couldn’t do much, because the discount made the landowner look like a hero! What’s the point of the parable? Jesus did not praise the steward for the bad behavior, but for “discounting” debts of others who would treat him with mercy and kindness during a tough time. After this parable, Jesus begs his followers to make good use of the world’s material goods to help those who are indebted to us when troubles arise.Generous giving is something we need to practice and will be rewarded with something that will last forever- treasure in Heaven, since we are all beggars of God!Our life here on earth is short, but what we do with our lives here matters where we go when our lives are done here on earth! We must avoid the temptations of greed and be generous in our lives as God is! May we recognize that Jesus is the “master” of our lives and open our hearts to freely love and be generous to others!

• Pray for Pope Francis and all those who lead the Church, especially Bishop Brennan

• Pray for those affected by natural disasters and acts of violence (Indonesia, Middle East, Israel, Bahamas, Liberia)

• A HUGE THANK YOU to those who assisted with the Joint Parish Picnic! A fun time was had by all!

• This weekend starts the Stewardship Committee’s presentations on how stewardship is a way of life. This weekend’s presentation will be about treasure.

• On September 30th-October 3, I will be gone for the Priests' Convocation. Because of this, there will be no daily Masses those days.

THE TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 22, 2019

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE/ADMINISTRACIÓN DE LA TESORERIA

Spiritual growth and renewal are a continuing part of the life of any Christian. These are essential ingredients for enriching a parish community. An important part of this spiritual growth is embodied in the principle of stewardship. Through stewardship, we thank God for all His blessings by returning to Him a portion of the time, talent, and treasure He has given to us. We now ask you to reflect on the treasure aspect of stewardship and to spend time in prayerful thought on how giving of your treasure will enhance the lives of others and grow your relationship with the Lord.

KARL RAHNERKarl Rahner was a German theologian, born in March of 1904 in Freiburg. He is considered one of the most influential Roman Catholic theologians of the 20th century. He was the fourth child of seven and the son of a college professor and a devout Christian mother. He entered the Jesuit community in 1922, following his brother, Hugo. Rahner studied philosophy at the University of Freiburg. He wrote his dissertation, which taught that the human search for meaning was rooted in the unlimited horizon of God’s own being experienced within the world. His Catholic advisor found the thesis unacceptable and refused to approve it. It was later published as Spirit in the World. Rahner then entered the Jesuit University in Innsbruck where he completed a dissertation in theology in 1937. Rahner taught at Innsbruck between 1937 and 1939, when the university was taken over by the Nazis. Rahner’s students found him a simple and holy priest whose concern for them was expressed in many kind actions on their behalf. He was a close personal advisor and spiritual director. The students also speak of Rahner’s continuing concern for those in need. They would spend hours with him finding money, food, clothing, and shelter for the needy.

His outreach included missionaries working with the poor in foreign lands. Rahner went to Vienna, Austria where he spent the war years teaching and as a pastor. After the war, Rahner returned to Innsbruck and later taught in Munich and Munster and retired in 1971. In 1962, he was appointed expert advisor by Pope John XXIII for the Second Vatican Council. The Council was very much influenced by his theology and his understanding of the Catholic faith. To the end of his life, Rahner was ever more convinced that the meaning of life was bound up in the experiences, history, and sacramental life that are God’s world of grace. Más tarde se publicó como Spirit in the World.
