Translation: “Alleluia: After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of
the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the
tomb: Alleluia.” (Antiphon for the Magnificat on Easter)
Pastor’s Pen
Dear St. Martin of Tours Parishioners and
Guests,
As spiritual leader of this wonderful par-
ish, I wish you a very Happy Easter!
This icon, which is mostly seen in
Catholic Churches in Greece or Russia, shows a very important moment both historically and theologically: Christ’s Descent into "Hell.” I put “Hell” in apostrophes, because this is not the Hell of Satan and the lost. This is the place of the dead which the Hebrew People called “Sheol” and which the Romans (best elucidated in Vergil’s Aeneid, Book 6) referred to as the Underworld; and which more importantly, as we state in the Creed which we recite every Sunday, is where Our Lord descended between His death and Resurrection, to preach to all the souls from the beginning of time who died before His coming.
Why is this important? Because (as you heard today in my homily), it was only by Christ’s victory on the Cross that Heaven was at last open to all humani-ty. Finally, after so many millennia, the dead could find their rest: Those who accepted his teaching (as determined by the way they lived their lives and by their confession of faith), Christ took with them to Heaven. Those who did not, they
were sent down to the eternal Hell from which there is no escape.
In this icon, we see Christ rescuing our first parents, Adam and Eve – Such a powerful symbol! Those who had been in Sheol the longest were the most fervent to recognize their Savior.
Notice how the golden bars by his feet, the “Gates to Hell” have been broken and torn apart by His feet. Notice the keys floating in the abyss below, which symbolize that Jesus has entered and conquered both death and Hell. You may, if you look very closely, also notice the skeletal figure who is chained up. which is Death and Satan who has been bound and killed by Christ,
The icon depicts what St. Luke writes in Hebrews 2:14:
“…that through death He might destroy him who has the power of death, that is,
the devil…” and by such a victory grant eternal life to all who believe in His Name.
Praise Be to Jesus Christ, who has freely given to us salvation. May we accept
His gift to us by a holy and selfless life, committed to Him.
May God Be Praised in Each One of You!

DASH’s DEN Dear Humans,
Daddy tells me that today humans celebrate the most important thing that ever,
ever happened ever. (I don’t understand what that means!)
But what Daddy tells me is that without this day – he means, if this day never
happened – then, when Daddy dies one day, he would never be alive again,
and his life and the life of every person ever would vanish into nothing.
That’s hard for me to understand. But the thought of Daddy leaving me for a few
hours makes me upset. If he left me forever, I don’t know what I would do! I cry
thinking about it!
But since Jesus did what He did, Daddy tells me that when he dies, he will still
be alive in God. And Daddy tells me that because of Jesus, that when I die,
because of Jesus, I will live forever, too! And Daddy and I will be able to play
for ever and ever and ever!
I asked Daddy, “What is Jesus like?” He told me, “He is like me, but he is even better, because he can play with
you all day and give you every treat you want!” Wow! I already love Daddy, so I know I will love this Jesus so
much!
Daddy says that just for fun, since it’s a special day, he is going to let me eat a lot of his food. I asked him if I could
have my favorite – bacon! He smiled and said he would share all his bacon with me!
If Daddy is so awesome, then Jesus must be really amazing. If I were a human, I think I would be a priest like
Daddy. And then … come to think of it … I would also get a dog … just like me! And I would name it Noah.
I hope Daddy likes that idea!
Woof!
