Welcome to St Margaret’s Church Ifield

Sunday 11th March 2018 Mothering Sunday

All are welcome to St Margaret’s and we encourage all to take part fully in this service. If you have mobility issues that make it difficult for you to

come and receive communion or laying-on-of-hands for healing, should you want to, then do please notify our sides-people, and we will come to you.

Please do stay for coffee served at the back of church after the service. There is a toilet at the back of church should you need to use it during the

service.

THE GATHERING

We stand at the entrance of the choir and clergy and sing:

Hymn 195: Folliot Pierpoint. Copyright © Oxford University Press

FOR THE BEAUTY OF THE EARTH,for the beauty of the skies, for the love which from our birthover and around us lies:Lord of all, to thee we raisethis our sacrifice of praise.

For the beauty of each hour‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’

(Romans 15:7)

of the day and of the night, hill and vale, and tree and flow’r,sun and moon, and stars of light:Lord of all, to thee we raisethis our sacrifice of praise.

For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth, and friends above, pleasures pure and undefiled Lord of all, to thee we raisethis our sacrifice of praise.

For each perfect gift of thine,to our race so freely giv’n,graces, human and divine, flow’rs of earth, and buds of heav’n:Lord of all, to thee we raisethis our sacrifice of praise.

For thy Church which evermore lifteth holy hands above, off’ring up on ev’ry shore her pure sacrifice of love:Lord of all, to thee we raisethis our sacrifice of praise.

THE GREETING

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

Celebrant The Lord be with youAll and also with you

THE PRAYER OF PREPARATIONAll Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all

desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYERS OF PENITENCE Celebrant Our Lord Jesus Christ said: The first commandment is

this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is the only Lord. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength’. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’. There is no other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

All Amen. Lord have mercy.

Celebrant The sacrifice of God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart God will not despise. Let us come to the Lord, who is full of compassion, and acknowledge our transgressions in penitence and faith.

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

All Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen.

Celebrant Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

THE COLLECTCelebrant God of compassion, whose Son Jesus Christ, the child

of Mary, shared the life of a home in Nazareth, and on the cross drew the whole human family to himself:strengthen us in our daily living that in joy and in sorrow we may know the power of your presence to bind together and to heal; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

Hymn : William Rees.

HERE IS LOVE VAST AS THE OCEAN,loving kindness as the flood, when the Prince of life, our ransomshed for us His precious blood.Who His love will not remember?Who can cease to sing His praise? He can never be forgottenthroughout heaven's eternal days. On the Mount of Crucifixionfountains opened deep and wide;through the floodgates of God's mercyflowed a vast and gracious tide.Grace and love, like mighty rivers, poured incessant from above, and heaven's peace and perfect justicekissed a guilty world in love.

Remain standing and turn to face the Gospel:

The Gospel ReadingLuke 2:33-35

The Lord be with you.All And also with you.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

All Glory to you, O Lord.At the end:

This is the Gospel of the Lord.‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’

(Romans 15:7)

All Praise to you, O Christ.Remain standing until the Priest has introduced the Sermon:

THE SERMON

We stand for:THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSIONPrayers for the Church, the world, and for all human need. After each petition the following responses may be used:

Lord, in your mercyAll Hear our prayer

and at the end of the prayers: Merciful father,All accept these prayers for the sake of your Son,

our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE SACRAMENTWe stand to share the peace:

The PeaceCelebrant Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God

through our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us access to his grace.

The peace of the Lord be always with you

All And also with you.

Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

As the Body of Christ receives its life from God, and offers its life to God, so we, as members of that Body, greet each other in love.

NOW THANK WE ALL OUR GOD,with heart and hands and voices, who wondrous things hath done,in whom his world rejoices;who from our mother’s armshath blessed us on our waywith countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.

O may this bounteous Godthrough all our life be near us,with ever joyful heartsand blessed peace to cheer us;and keep us in his grace, and guide us when perplexed, and free us from all illsin this world and the next.

All praise and thanks to Godthe Father now be given, the Son, and him who reignswith them in highest heaven, the one eternal God,whom earth and heaven adore, for thus it was, is now,and shall be evermore.

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

Celebrant Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendour, and the majesty; for everything in heaven and on earth is yours.

All All things come from you, and of your own do we give you.

We sit or stand for:The Eucharistic Prayer

The Lord is hereAll His Spirit is with us.

Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.All It is right to give thanks and praise.

Celebrant It is indeed right and good to give you thanks and praise, almighty God and everlasting Father, through Jesus Christ your Son. For in these forty days you lead us into the desert of repentance that through a pilgrimage of prayer and discipline we may grow in grace and learn to be your people once again.Through fasting, prayer and acts of service you bring us back to your generous heart. Through study of your holy word you open our eyes to your presence in the world and free our hands to welcome others into the radiant splendour of your love.As we prepare to celebrate the Easter feast with joyful hearts and minds we bless you for your mercy and join with saints and angels for ever praising you and singing:

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

A Gregory Murray, OSB 1905-1992©1975, 1987 McCrimmon Publishing LtdAll Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

Heaven and earth are full of your glory.Hosanna in the highest.Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.Hosanna in the highest. We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son.On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.

When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory.

Praise to you Lord Jesus:All Dying you destroyed our death,

Rising you restored our life:Lord Jesus, come in glory.

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

Lord of all life, help us to work together for that daywhen your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with St Margaret and all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done,on earth as in heaven.Give us today our daily bread.Forgive us our sins,as we forgive those who sin against us.Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

The Breaking of the BreadThe Priest breaks the consecrated bread

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All Though we are many, we are one body,

because we all share in one bread.

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

The Giving of Communion

Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

All We do not presume to come to this your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us. Amen.

We sing the Agnus Dei.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: grant us peace.

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

All are welcome to either come and receive Communion or a blessing. If you would like a blessing rather than to receive Communion (the bread and wine) then please keep hold of your service sheet as you approach the

servers at front of the church.

Laying on of hands for healing is offered in the south aisle chapel during the distribution of communion. This ministry is offered for your own

needs or for someone who maybe on your heart and mind at this time.

Those who are going into hospital in the coming week, or for some other reason, and who would like to be anointed with oil of healing and prayed for by a priest please do have a word with a priest after the service – they

will gladly offer you this ministry.

MAKE ME A CHANNEL OF YOUR PEACE. Where there is hatred let me bring your love. Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord; and where there’s doubt, true faith in you.

O Master, grant that I may never seek so much to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love with all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace. Where there’s despair in life let me bring hope. Where there is darkness, only light, and where there’s sadness, ever joy.

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

O Master, grant that I may never seek so much to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love with all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, in giving of ourselves that we receive, and in dying that we’re born to eternal life.

The Prayers after CommunionCelebrant Loving God, as a mother feeds her children at the

breast you feed us in this sacrament with the food and drink of eternal life: help us who have tasted your goodness to grow in grace within the household of faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

All Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

Jamie has taken some time off for personal reasons. Please respect his privacy and keep him and Naomi in your prayers at this time. Jamie hopes to be able to return as soon as possible and thanks you all for your concern.

The services of Compline in Holy Week have been advertised as being at 8 pm – they will now be moved to 7:30 pm to allow us to continue with the Diocesan Lent Course – sessions of which had to be postponed due to bad weather. Each session is a ‘stand alone’ one so newcomers will be quite welcome. We shall be looking at pieces of art and exploring what they teach us about prayer.

Old ink cartridges mobile phones. Bring your old ink cartridges and phones to church to help raise money. Please place them in the box by the table.

Prayer shawl chicks. Knitted chicks with cream eggs in their bodies are available for £2. The money raised goes to buy wool for the knitting of prayer shawls.

A novel way to raise £130 for our church. Our churches and other buildings are all insured with Ecclesiastical Insurance which has insured the nation’s churches for 130 years. In recognition of this they will generously give our church £130 for any new Household Insurance taken out with them during 2018. So when it comes round to renewing your household insurance why not ask Ecclesiastical for a

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

quote? Their standard cover is very good as it includes legal expenses, plumbing and drainage etc. that others may not. As with other insurance companies, you may need to ‘negotiate’. Do not disclose what renewal with your current company will cost until they have given you a figure. Then you have room to ‘negotiate’! We switched to Ecclesiastical, saved money and the church benefitted by £130.This offer from Ecclesiastical applies to any policy taken out in 2018. So when the time comes round, before 31st December, to renew your Household Insurance I would encourage you to see if you, too, can get a better or comparable offer. All you need to do is call: 0800 783 0130 and quote ‘Trust130’ or visit www.ecclesiastical.com/Trust130This is a generous offer that can really help our church, so please take advantage of it. Following on from last year’s The Year of the Bible the diocese of Chichester is now launching The Year of Prayer to help encourage all of us in our prayer life – something that lies close to the heart of having a deep, sustaining and meaningful relationship with God. Throughout this year St Margaret’s will be running various events and activities (see the Year of Prayer Programme flyer) that will help us all grow in our pray life – do put the dates in your diaries now so that you don’t miss out!

Please contact Hannah on [email protected] for more information.

Parish Electoral Roll (New Members Only) – Have you been coming regularly to St Margaret’s Church for six months or more? Have you been Baptised? Are you aged 16 years+? If so then you can complete an Electoral Roll form. Being on the Roll does not entail you signing up to any additional commitments, however it does help the church show its strength. Representation on the governing bodies of the church depends on the number on the electoral roll. Joining the Roll is compulsory if you wish to stand for election to the PCC or other synodical council (such as the Deanery, Diocesan or General Synod). Joining the Roll gives you the right to attend and vote at the APCM (annual parochial church meeting). It enables you to help in the democratic choosing of who stands on the decision making body of your church! Forms are available in Church, and the deadline for having received forms back is 31st March 2018, so please return them to Clare Wilson (PCC Secretary and Parish Electoral Roll Officer) either in Church or via the Parish Office. NOTE: If you have already joined the Roll at St Margaret’s in the last few years, then you don’t need to do anything this year. If you are not sure if you are on the electoral roll, Clare is happy to advise.
