From The Pastor’s Desk On Saturday, April 21, Jonathon Schmeckel was ordained a deacon. It is a great occasion for him and for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. We have enjoyed his presence in our parish and look forward to hearing him preach in the weeks and months ahead. Please join me in congratulating Deacon Jonathon, and please continue to pray for him, as he prepares for his priestly ordination.

In more good news, Deacon Jonathon will spend his summer with us and exercise his diaconal ministry here at St. Alphonsus. We look forward to that.

Last weekend, we were pleased to announce that our outstanding parish mortgage fell below the $1,000,000 mark for the first time. Thanks to your generosity, we are rapidly paying down our loans and are scheduled to retire the mortgage by the end of next year. Thank you for supporting Our Parish, Our Future!

It’s crunch time for the Parish Dinner/Auction. The Auction is this coming Friday and is sure to be a wonderful evening. It’s not too late to purchase raffle tickets or to make a sponsorship. We thank you for your support and participation in this important parish event.

This Sunday is the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Please pray for vocations. In a special way, would you add this intention to your prayers?

For an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and Consecrated Life and, in a particular way, for priestly vocations to the Archdiocese of Milwaukee from St. Alphonsus Parish. Let us pray to the Lord.

This week is also Safe Environment Week. The theme this year is “Have Courage, Go Forward.” We continue to pray for healing for all those impacted by abuse and work to remain vigilant that our parish, school, homes and community are safe places for all of God’s children.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

-Fr. Aaron J. Esch

Voices From The Pew Our liturgical ministers came together for fellowship and formation recently. Here are some of their comments:

“I’ve always loved coming to church. My family had always been involved in parish life.” – Margaret “It is a joy to distribute Eucharist. I see God in each one who receives.” -Bernie

If you are interested in joining one of our liturgical ministries, contact Terry at 421-2442.

Help For New Parents Catholic Charities’ Pregnancy and Parenting Supportive Services program was awarded a grant through the Aurora Better Together Fund to offer in-home therapy for moms and dads who are expecting a child or have an infant in their home. The therapist assists clients who have a mental health diagnosis or those who may be struggling with postpar-tum depression. The therapist works along-side the home visiting team that offers in-home education and support.

If you are in need or know someone who might need help, please call 573-5899.

Your Attention Please Very soon you will receive your first quarter statement from the parish. Though the amounts are all correct for 2018, the statement reads “your pledge for 2017.” That is incorrect and should read “your pledge for 2018.”

A Stewardship Moment In today’s Gospel reading, we hear Jesus referring to himself as “the good shepherd.” His sheep know him, trust him, listen to him and follow him; having faith that no harm will come to them as long as they stay close to him. We reaffirmed our faith in Christ when we renewed our baptismal promises at Easter. As stewards of our relationship with Jesus Christ, are we, like the sheep, willing to listen to Jesus, trust him, and follow him no matter the cost to our comfort?

Thank You For Your Continued Generosity To

Seeking Unconfirmed Adult Catholics Sometimes Catholics reach adulthood without completing the Initiation Sacraments. The Sacrament of Confirmation completes and confirms us as baptized Christians. If you or your friends have reached adulthood with-out celebrating this sacrament, this coming fall might be the time to partici-pate in a preparation process. You will be placed with others in a similar situation, respectful of who you are – adults--and already baptized Catholics. Please con-tact Sister Eileen for more information: call 421-2442, or e-mail: [email protected].

School Scoop So much for the beginning of spring! Our students hauled out the boots again, and we are ready for anything. Our sixth, seventh and eighth grade students will be serving at the St. Al's Auction this year. Service is an important component in any school but espe-cially a Catholic school. It takes an entire village to educate our students, and parents are especially important in fullfilling the service needs. As a Catholic parent, volunteer-ing is expected and needed to make a school successful. There are so many moving parts in education that the staff can't do it alone. When parents register their children, there is an expectation that they also volunteer to make the year a success.

The Lion King Jr. production is coming up soon. Tickets are $9.00 for performances on Thursday, May 17, at 7:00 p.m., Friday, May 18, at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, May 19, at 2:00 p.m., and Saturday, May 19, at 7:30 p.m. Flyers for the play are located on the table in the Gathering Space. Unsold tickets may be purchased at the door starting 30 minutes prior to show time. It promises to be an exciting evening.

Keep the faith--spring will come. -Pat Wadzinski, Principal

April Is Child Abuse Prevention

Month It is most appropriate that Child Abuse Prevention Month is held during the Easter season. There is no better time to celebrate the protection of our most valuable gift from God—our children.

Keeping God’s Children Protected And Safe To know that we are children of God is to live in com-plete love, with deep abiding security and the ability to dream, to sing, to create, to laugh and to play without worry. As we grow older, we face a new reality. We cannot approach all God’s creation with the same trust and confidence. We learn through hatred and some-times damaging experiences that some people reject the ability that God gave them to love and respect others—they ignore God’s call to love and respect others. The Archdiocese of Milwaukee’s program to safeguard children helps remind us of these very facts. With the help of this program, the faithful are guided and educated about the responsibilities of how to keep God’s children protected and safe.

Prayer for Vocations What is your vocation? When I started my theology degree, one of my pro-fessors asked, "What is your vocation?" My answer, a theology student. "Wrong!" was his thunderous response. He then began to explain the difference between vocation and avocation. Basically, that which you do for a living is your avocation, and that which you ARE at the most basic level of your being is your vocation. For us as Ro-man Catholics, our being, that which is part of our soul, is our vocation. Sacraments change and add something to our soul. At baptism, our very being is changed so that we now belong to Christ. During the sacrament of matrimony, we are wedding to an-other human being. Our soul is wedded, not just our person. When a man is ordained, his soul is changed. He becomes a part of Christ in his very being. So, if someone asks what your vocation is, a more appropriate answer might be, I'm a baptized Christian, or I'm married, or I'm a deacon or priest.

Let us pray…

Good and gracious God, We became part of you when you claimed us in baptism. When two of us become married, you wed us together with you as the third person. When one of us is ordained, you implant your very being into us, a part of your holy Paschal Mystery. Bless all of us as we live out our vocation to you with our lives and breath. Bless all of us also as we work in the world in our avocation so that we may honestly live our vocation in the Church.

We ask all this in Christ's name. Amen. Liturgical Publications Inc

Catholic Scouting At St. Alphonsus Parish Over the past year, many of our scouts have been working to earn different religious med-als. These medals begin with 2nd grade. The goal is to build a relationship with Jesus. In the 2nd to 4th grade, boys and girls work with their families, as they go through the different steps of earning the medals. As the program builds, they learn to understand where they can help within their own church communities.

On Sunday, April 15, these scouts earned the following badges. Ad Altare Dei (To the altar of God): Evan Smasal, Joe Missurelli and Jack Farley Parvuli Dei (Child of God): Stuart Thomson, Deacon Ward, Matt Volm, Joshua Dahlen, Will Peelen, Kevin Goshaw, Jakob Janocik, Dylan Flink, Beckett Brigham, Alejandro Munoz, and Joshua Morris Light of Christ: Matthew Pochowski, Devin Czaika, Max Chelius and Aaron Rekowski Family of God: Ella Pollak, Tess Fieldbinder, Dulce Tayes, Haley Volm, Maddie Halser, Maddie Peelen, Addison Kaul, Emily Chandek, Kaci Korducki, Adelyn Rugg, Ella Nencka, Giselle Munoz, Isabelle Coffelt, Samantha Stikel, Keira Schatz, Chasya Cash, Julie Lehman, Lilah Latona, Isabella San Miguel and Kadyson Krey.

We congratulate these scouters and their families, as they strive to grow their faith through these programs.

One note, we are looking for boy scouts in grades 6-9, who would be interested in working on the Ad Altare Dei award next year, as well as high school scouts who would be interested in learning about the Pope Pius Award. Please contact the Parish Office, 421-2442. - Kathy Monacelli
