On the way to school or market we seemany people at work.

Vocation



When the gong sounds ten in the morning and

I walk to school by our Lane,

Everyday I meet the hawker crying, “Bangles, crystalbangles!”

There is nothing to hurry him on, there is no

oad he must take, no lace he must go to, no

Time when he must come home"

I wish I were a hawker , sending my day in

The road, crying, “Bangles, crystal Bangles!”



When at #our in the a#ternoon I come back #rom theschool,

I can see through the gate o# that house the gardener

digging the ground"$e does what he likes with his sade, he soils

$is clothes with dust, nobody takes him to

Task, i# he gets baked in the sun or get wet"

I wish I were a gardener digging away at the garden with nobody to sto me #rom digging"



%ust as it gets dark in the evening and my

&other sends me to bed,

I can see through my oen window theWatchman walking u and down"

The lane is dark and lonely, and the street'

Lam stands like a giant with one red eye in

Its head"



The watchman swings his lantern and walks

with his shadow at his side, and never once

(oes to bed in his li#e"

I wish I were a watchman walking the street

)ll night, chasing the shadows with my

Lantern"

The child wishes that he were a watchman walkingthe streets all night chasing the shadows.
