(See Acts 2:1-13; see also Joel 2:28-32.) Following worship, we invite those who are new to the church to join us by the fireplace in the Parish Hall, where New Member Committee representatives will greet you and answer any questions you may have. Nursery care is available for infants through three-year-olds during worship. Pagers are available. A cry room with an audio broadcast of worship is available downstairs in the Marks Room. Children in Worship – At 11:00 a.m., families with two- and three-year-olds are welcome to report directly to the Nursery. Four-year-olds through second-graders attend worship and may exit with their teachers before the sermon to participate in children’s chapel worship and Christian education. (If you are a first- time guest, please accompany your child to the Chapel before returning to the Sanctuary.) Parents should meet their children in the Christian education classrooms after worship. On the first Sunday of the month, first- and second-graders stay in worship through the entire service for Communion. A bulletin insert designed for children is available in the Narthex. A video broadcast of worship is available in the Craig Room, accessible through the Narthex at the back of the Sanctuary. ORIsON John HarperAlleluya! Praise God in His holy place, praise Him in His mighty heaven. Praise Him for His powerful deeds, praise His surpassing greatness. O praise Him with sounding of trumpet, lute, and harp. Praise Him with timbrel and dance, with strings and pipe. Praise Him with resounding of cymbals, praise Him with clashing of cymbals. Let everything that breathes give praise to the Lord. Text adapted from Psalm 150

PRAyER OF CONFEssION (spoken in unison) Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on us! For we know that all our failures and shortcomings stand revealed in the clear light of Your goodness. Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on us! We need and ask Your forgiveness. Forgive our hardness of heart; our pride of spirit; our want of thoughtfulness, patience, kindness, and sympathy in dealing with others. Mold us, make us, fill us, and use us! May the mind of Christ be formed in us, so we might choose the path of service He set before us. Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on us this Pentecost!

There are different ways of serving God, But it is the same Lord who is served. God works through each person in different ways, But it is the same God who achieves His purpose through them all. Leader: Within our common ministry, some members are chosen for particular work as ministers of the word, ruling elders, or deacons. In ordination, we recognize these special ministries, remembering that our Lord Jesus said: “Whoever among you wants to be great, must become the servant of all, and whoever wants to be first among you, must be the slave of all.”

s AFFIRMATION OF FAITh The Apostles’ CreedI believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

PAsTORAl PRAyER AND ThE lORD’s PRAyER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

OFFERING ANThEMCome, Holy Ghost Eric ThimanCome, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, and lighten with celestial fire; Thou the anointing Spirit art, who dost Thy sevenfold gifts impart. Thy blessed unction from above is comfort, life, and fire of love; enable with perpetual light the dullness of our blinded sight. Anoint and cheer our soiled face with the abundance of Thy grace. Keep far our foes, give peace at home, where Thou art Guide no ill can come. Teach us to know the Father, Son, and Thee, of Both, to be but One; that through the ages all along this may be our endless song: Praise to Thy eternal merit, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. Presentation, Dinner, and Discussion – On Wednesday, June 12, Amro Elaswalli, Imam of the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh, will join us to share a presentation titled “Together for Peace.” The dinner will be held at 6:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall and will conclude by 7:30 p.m. Please sign up in the Sharp Atrium or contact the church office to RSVP.

summer Evening Bible study – The most profound exploration of the life of faith ever written, the Book of Job addresses some of life’s most difficult questions: “Why should we worship God if there are no guarantees that life will be easy?” and, when things go very wrong, “Why did this happen?” Job has profound things to teach us about faith in the midst of our life experiences — particularly the hardest ones. Join facilitator Peggy Heely for this seven-week summer study, starting Wednesday, June 12, at 7:00 p.m. We will continue to meet on Wednesday evenings through August 7, with the exception of July 3, when we will not meet. Interested church members, friends, guests, and neighbors all are welcome. Please contact Kaysie Strickland in the church office to sign up.

young Adult Bible study – Young adults and friends of Shadyside Presbyterian Church are invited to participate in our study of St. Paul’s Epistle to the Romans. We typically gather from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays in the Stamy Room. Our next meeting is Thursday, June 13. Join us as we continue to build community through study. For more information, please contact Rev. John Magnuson.

Door security Change – Beginning Sunday, June 16, the back parking lot door and the Parish Hall doors will be locked Sunday mornings on a regular basis. Access to the lower level of the church will be available at the nursery school doors only. Thank you for your assistance with providing this extra measure of security on Sunday mornings.

Book Collection for Fathers of hOPE – The Foundation of HOPE empowers incarcerated and released individuals to restore their relationship with their God, rebuild their lives, and reconcile to their community. One aspect of this program is giving parents in the Allegheny County Jail an opportunity to read and record stories for their children. This is not only a service to the parents currently in jail, but also provides an outlet of love and support for their children as well. Please join us in providing new youth and children’s books, which the parents will then pass along to their children after recording. A collection basket is located by the Westminster Place entrance; book donations are welcome and appreciated at any time, but we extend a special invitation to consider participating in this collection as Father’s Day approaches.

Mars hill Mission Experience – July 7-13, 2019 – Consider joining us on our all-church, intergenerational mission trip. This will be our twelfth trip to the Appalachian foothills of North Carolina, where individuals and families work on homes of disadvantaged homeowners. (Absolutely no construction skills are required!) Youth and adults work side by side, while special programs are created for younger children. Informational booklets with registration forms are available in the Narthex and Sharp Atrium. The registration deadline is Sunday, June 16. Please contact Rev. Todd Leach with any questions.

Food Truck Fellowship – Join us on Sunday, June 23, when we will welcome D’s Road Dogz food truck in the circular driveway to enhance our Time of Fellowship following worship. Chef Steven Bright’s wonderful

Mission Partner SpotlightShadyside Presbyterian Church has a long history of partnering with Valley View Presbyterian Church in Garfield. Under the leadership of the Valley View team, Shadyside helped to design and implement the arts and crafts portion of their five-week Freedom Camp summer program. Members from SPC volunteer annually to work with the children during the camp, and our lives have been truly enriched by our neighbors’ young children.

This will be our tenth year providing crafts for Freedom Camp. The Community Kids Mission Action Community (MAC) seeks volunteers to assist the children at Valley View on Tuesday afternoons from 12:45 to 2:30 p.m. The dates are June 25 through July 23. You may volunteer for one Tuesday or for as many as you are able; we are particularly in need of volunteers for July 9. If you are interested in volunteering, please sign up in the Sharp Atrium or contact Susan Thomson through the church office.

The Community Kids MAC partners with schools, after-school programs, and non-profit agencies in Pittsburgh that aid in education efforts and the protection of children at risk. The MAC supports these organizations financially, and through recruiting volunteers to tutor, serve, and mentor. To join the efforts of the Community Kids MAC, contact the church office.

About the Cover

A descending dove on the cover of this morning’s bulletin depicts the Holy Spirit in a detail of an art glass window visible from the west front of Shadyside Presbyterian Church. Observed fifty days after Easter, the Day of Pentecost is the celebration of the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church. The dove imagery is often used to symbolize the Holy Spirit in Christian art based on the account of Jesus’ baptism as recorded in the Gospels. Photograph taken by Ellen L. Allston.
