Greeting from your new State Promotional Director. If you are

not yet aware, Brother Carl Lilly retired and moved to Florida, and at the West Virginia State Association in June, I was elected to fill this office. As such, I would ask that you pray that God will

give me the abilities to do the job, the guidance to make right decisions, the direction in which He would have our state to go, the compassion to love our people, and the humility to serve the Free Will Baptist across our great state. As your State Promotional Director, I want to try and bring more unity to our churches across our state. I want to try and get those that feel left out - to feel needed and get involved in our State Association. I want the ideals, and goals of the State Association, to represent all our churches. I want to expand upon what Brother Carl Lilly did with the calling system by using it even on the local level, to promote revivals, conferences, and other activities that are specific to certain areas. I also want to promote education, and training opportunities to Ministers, Deacons, and Lay People across our state, by working with Brother Jim Cox and the seminars he puts together. I also want to put educational materials (information, lessons, classes, resources, etc.) on the State Website, so they are easy to access. I think we, as a State Association, should try to offer whatever help, resources, and assistance we can to struggling churches (even if it is only our prayers and our moral support). I want to try and motivate our Pastors, Deacons, Church Leaders, and Lay Members, to be more involved in their local church, conference, and the State Association, that

the end result may bring about greater fellowship, adoration, praise, and worship of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As your State Promotional Director I have been very busy since the State Association: I have visited the Brotherhood, Greenbrier Nicholas, Beckley, Eastern Panhandle, and Kanawha Conferences; visited Dry Branch, Chesapeake, Loudendale, and Crown Hill churches; attended the National Association in Louisville, Ky.; attended a Women Active for Christ meeting for the African women from the Ivory Coast, and a dinner for them with various State Leaders; attended meetings with the Mission Board, the Christian Education Board, the Executive Committee, and the Publication Board; attended the wakes of Dale Hadley and Andy Maynard (both long time F.W.B. ministers and pastors); have talked with numerous State and National leaders, gathering information and materials which I believe can, and will be helpful to the people of our State Association of Free Will Baptist. I have been working on a Power Point presentation, which I can take to our churches, to show them all the different programs and opportunities that are available to our people. It has been a busy time - but a blessed time. I have very much enjoyed the fellowship and encouragement I have received. Please continue to pray for me as I travel across our state, that God will encourage and richly bless our people.

Greetings, As I prayed about what to write, I felt impressed to encourage us to follow Paul’s instructions; (and the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. II Tim. 2:2). When I think of so many that are lost, when I think of so many that are deceived through the fables that are being taught, it breaks my heart. Oh what a great need there is for us to preach the WORD. What a great need for us to commit the SAME to FAITHFUL men. My dear brothers, if there ever was a time that we need to know the WORD and preach the WORD, it is the day in which we live. A lie can be changed a hundred different ways and still be a lie, but the truth cannot be changed and still remain the truth. Small changes in calculations have resulted in planes colliding, ships sinking, and many other disasters, but being wrong about the word of God can have eternal consequences.

I thought of an experience I had as a young boy that I have never forgotten. I was helping my older brother build a building. We were to the roof section and he cut me a rafter for a pattern. He intended for me to use the one pattern board to mark all the rafters. I didn’t follow instructions. I would mark one then use it to mark the next one, then use that one to mark the next one, and so on. I kept getting off a little more with each rafter that I marked. Needless to say, by the time I got to the last one, I was way off. I had to go back and use the same one to mark each rafter and then they were all right. The Word of God is no different, Paul said “the SAME commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” When he used the word SAME, he was refering to the Word of God and sound doctorine, if we don’t commit the SAME each time, we’ll get farther and farther off. May God help us to be faithful to His Word......

THE MESSENGER • Fall 20173 THE MESSENGER • Fall 20173

Before you read this devotion please take the time to read St. John 15:1-17. In verse one Jesus said, I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. One thing to notice, Jesus said that He is the true vine, whom God has given so that the whole world can be saved is the truth. As Jesus continued speaking he also said that the Father took away branches that bare no fruit, but purged those that did so that they may bring forth more fruit. In verse three Jesus said, Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken to you. The only way we are going to have fellowship with God the Father and his Son Jesus Christ is when we have been washed by the word. Then, we can abide with Him and He with us. Webster defines the word abide “to stay or live somewhere: to remain or continue”. As a branch we will never be able to work the work of God unless we are abiding in the vine. The vine is our only source of life. Listen how sad it will be for those branches that do not stay connected, they wither and die and men gather them and

cast them into the fire and they are burned.

Our lives produce a fruit and the condition of our heart determines what type of fruit we show. When our heart is surrendered to God, our life will produce a fruit that will glorify God then can we be His disciples. When our heart isn’t surrendered to God and we aren’t abiding in the true vine, then we will produce the works of the flesh that Paul spoke of in Galatians 5. I want to leave you with a thought. In Genesis chapter 49 Jacob calls his sons together to bless them. As he begins to speak to Joseph he called him a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well, whose branches run over the wall. We all need that source of water that comes from the well, it is our source of life. Jacob spoke many things but listen to verse twenty four; the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob. Bearing fruit and staying connected to the true vine may not be pleasing to the flesh, but God is working in us that our Joy might remain and that our Joy may be full. He will strengthen the arms of our hands just as he did for Joseph.

John.15[1] I am the true vine, and my Father is the hus-bandman.[2] Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.[3] Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.[4] Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch can-not bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.[5] I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do noth-ing.[6] If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.[7] If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.[8] Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.[9] As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.[10] If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Fa-ther’s commandments, and abide in his love.[11] These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.[12] This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.[13] Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.[14] Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.[15] Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.[16] Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should re-main: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.[17] These things I command you, that ye love one another.

International Missions:

Jonathan and Amy Postlewaite -- write . . . “With the fall quickly approaching, we are praying about and planning our strategies to make disciples and plant a church (or churches) in our city and the surrounding region... Our city is divided into sev-eral ‘neighborhoods.’ Each of these neighborhood contains several thousand people. We would like to see Bible studies and home groups started in these areas as a way to reach more people in the entire city. Amy has seen great success with several different English clubs and classes over the last year and will start them up again soon in just a few weeks. Please pray that she will be able to bring in more people who we can get to know and eventually share the Gospel.”

Tim and Lydia Awtrey -- write . . .“I have a small garden in Bulgaria where every year we plant some corn, tomatoes, peppers, etc. There is nothing better than picking a fresh strawberry or tomato out of your own garden. However, those fresh fruits and vegetables have a price. Digging up the soil, planting, watering, hours of weeding and pruning are necessary for a healthy garden. Church planting in Bulgaria is much like planting a home garden. A lot of work must go in to the soil, weeding and pruning before one can enjoy the fruits of their labor... It is not easy and involves hard work. Yet, it is my hope that one day there will be several generations of believers and many healthy Free Will Baptist churches in Bulgaria. They will not think of our struggles and challenges, but will be able to enjoy the fruits of a healthy Christian community that gives glory to Jesus. “

Home Missions:Josue Rivera --Brother Josue has been busy in the Eastern Panhandle Working with the Roca Church (the existing Hispanic church), and trying to establish the 2nd Hispanic church there. He has been visiting with, and having Bible Studies in the home of several Hispanics. He hopes to begin regular services in the near future, and get the 2nd church going. Pray for him and the unreached Hispanics in that area, that God may richly bless.

Morgantown Area --I would ask that you continue to pray for the Morgantown area of W.V. The Mission Board has been praying and seeking for someone to go to that area and start a Mission Church. We now have a young man and his family that are very interested in going there and planting a Free Will Baptist Church. Please pray that everything will work out, and that this will be the beginning of greater things yet to come.

THE CRUCIBLEWithout warning, a life experience rocks your world and jolts your soul! Sleepless nights ensure: tears become your constant companion; peace of mind vanishes; and the God who has always been your Refuge is suddenly silent. Faith says there’s a reason – just hold on. Dangling near the edge of a deep precipice in your life, you manage to tie a knot in faith’s rope and cling tightly for your life. Seizing every moment of your peril, satan constantly buffets and wearies you to the point of collapse. Where is God?Months pass as your faith is sorely tired. Your body begins to show the strain of sleep loss and poor ap-petite. Then, God breaks His silence! He shows you a huge rock rolling down a slope, stopping in your pathway ahead. God speaks: “Rest here. This is your Ebenezer Rock. I have brought you this far. You Rest while I work..” Gratefully you climb up onto the rock to rest – not fret!

Behold! From the rock you witness impossibilities transpire and miraculous changes taking place. You at last begin to get a glimpse into God’s great purposes – a glimpse that offers a ray of hope and a soothing balm to your troubled mind. Eventually, you sense it’s time to climb down from your resting rock. You can resume your journey of life, but with cautious steps on wobbly legs. However, you now carry in your heart new precepts learned from your great trial:1. When God is silent, He is still there, just as the sun is still behind dark clouds.2. Though guiltless, we must be humbly willing to suffer for the Master and for His kingdom purposes, even though we don’t understand.3. God owes us no explanation for what He does, though He graciously gives insight from time to time.4. We must relinquish the reigns of control from our bloodied hands into His capable hands. Imagine how the devil laughs when he sees the reigns of life in mortal hands!

Godly men and women, though innocent, are not shielded from heartaches and suffering. Jesus was inno-cent – He suffered. But it is HOW we emerge from our fiery crucible of trial that tests our character and either strengthens or crushes us. Tie a knot! Hold on!Note: The words “satan” and “devil” were purposely not capitalized I choose to give him no honor.

“The king shall joy in thy strength, O Lord; and in thy salvation how greatly shall he rejoice!” [Psalm 21: 1] Jesus is a true treasure. You can’t put a price on a relationship with Jesus! I would rather have Him than vast amounts of silver or gold. How awesome He is to me! I truly treasure Him in my life! He will be a real treasure to the believer who truly lives for Him. “In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness.” {Psalm 31:1] Jesus will be a true friend who can be relied on. You don’t have to let fear or doubt control your life. Trusting Jesus means more than having earthly treasures that are uncertain. A relationship with Jesus is an investment in eternity! Why settle for less than the best! If you do not know Jesus as your personal Saviour, make Him your treasure. He has real value that will not decrease with time. Jesus is a real treasure! w i t h S i s t e r J o d y S u l l i va nWAC NewsWAC NewsReflections on the church in Ivory Coast:The ladies in the church I attend recently did a Bible study on the life of David. The most fascinating part to me was when David had already fought his battles, conquered his enemies and was well advanced in years. He is almost ready to die. Even though David is an old man, he still has a heart for God. One day as he is meditating, he realizes that he is living an extravagant life in a beautiful palace…but God is still residing in a tent. So he decides that he will build a Temple for God to dwell in. As you read the story in I Chronicles 29, God tells him he can’t build the Temple because he is a “bloody” man. A man of peace, Solomon, has been chosen to erect the building.Even though David’s plans have been vetoed by God, David decides he will do what he can to help so he personally gives great wealth to start the building. The children of Israel are called together and God says to the people, “Give Solomon a hand in building the Temple. He’s going to need it.”The people are asked to give freely and the people responded. They gave freely and wholeheartedly just like David did. The people also contributed to the work with manual labor. Everybody did their part! Some provided the materials and the finances, some oversaw the work while others did the physical labor…but they all did their part.“Where is she going with this?” you might ask. I believe we can apply this same story to the work in Ivory Coast! Even though there were no FWB missionaries in the Ivory Coast until the late 1950’s, God had a plan. Someone paved the way with the government. God placed the call to “go” in the hearts of a young couple, Lonnie & Anita Sparks. The Sparks gave a lot to the people in Ivory Coast:

they gave of their time, their talent and their love of God. One of the most precious things Bro. Lonnie did was to translate the New Testament into Kolongo so these sweet people could have a New Testament in their own language! It wasn’t long until others moved others into the area to help building His Kingdom there. God called the Mayhews to help the Sparks. Later, Dr. and Mrs. Miley were called to care for the people’s physical needs. Small acts of continued kindnesses tendered hearts and gave credibility to these missionaries and their God. Eventually souls were saved. Spiritual babies began to grow and God gave wisdom to these new believers as they grew in grace, knowledge and faith.Men were trained and began pastoring and leading churches. Others worked alongside the leadership by leading the singing and teaching. They began to become independent in the work of the Lord. This is a success story - we must remember the missionary’s job is to work himself out of his job. In 1970, it was reported that there were 6000+ believers in Ivory Coast that attend 19 churches and 70 other locations each week to joyfully worship God.While many of us have given finances and some have gone and labored with the people (such as Sis. Alice Smith), we can both enjoy praising God for what He has done in Ivory Coast. One of these days, we’ll gather - every tribe, tongue and nation and give the Lord the praise He is due. Amen!

Pray for us as we pray for you.Jody Sullivan

THE MESSENGER • Fall 20179

One of the members of a church where I was pas-tor was asked by a visitor one day, “Why Free Will Baptist? What does your church believe that makes you different from other Baptists?”Unfortunately, the member answered, “Our pas-tor is out of town at the moment, but when he gets back, he can answer your question.” If you had been that member, could you have an-swered? Do you know our heritage? Do you know what we believe, and where we came from? Free Will Baptists have a long and rich his-tory dating from 1935. Looking back even farther, we can see this rich history on display in 1780 in New Durham, New Hampshire, as well as in 1727 in Chowan, North Carolina. Even more, in an article in CONTACT MAGA-ZINE of August 1979, William F. Davidson states: “The latter work (An Early History of the Free Will Baptists) proved a historical link between the Free Will Baptists and the General Baptist work begun by Paul Palmer in Chowan, NC in 1727. The two groups used the General Baptist Statement of Faith (the first Free Will Baptist Confession, 1812, is vir-tually a verbatim copy of the 1660 English General Baptist Confession.)” As one compares the doctrinal content of our Free Will Baptist Statement of Faith, and our Free Will Baptist Church Covenant, with the “first Free Will Baptist Confession, 1812”, it becomes evi-dent that they have their origins in the teachings of Jacob (James) Arminius in “The Remonstrance” of 1610, as well as in the writings of Thomas Helwys and John Smyth, pastors along with Arminius who continued the work after Arminius passed away on October 19, 1609.(See:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Articles_of_Remonstrance)

CHURCH COVENANTHaving given ourselves to God, by faith in Christ, and adopted the Word of God as our rule of faith and practice, we now give ourselves to one another by the will of God in this solemn covenant. We promise, by His grace, to love and obey Him in all things, to avoid all appearance of evil, to abstain from all sinful amusements and unholy confor-mity to the world, from all sanction of the use and sale of intoxicating beverages, and to “provide things honest in the sight of all men.” We agree faithfully to discharge our obligations in reference to the study of the Scriptures, secret prayer, family devotions, and social worship; and by selfdenial, faith, and good works endeavor to “grow in grace and the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” We will not forsake the assembling of ourselves together for church conferences, public worship, and the observance of the ordinances of the Gospel; nor fail to pay according to our ability for the support of the church, of its poor, and all its benevolent work. We agree to accept Christian admonition and reproof with meekness, and to watch over one another in love, endeavoring to “keep the unity of the Spirit” in the bonds of peace, to be careful of one another’s happiness and reputation, and seek to strengthen the weak, encourage the afflicted, admonish the erring, and as far as we are able, promote the suc-cess of the church and of the Gospel. We will everywhere hold Christian principle sacred and Christian obligations and enterprises supreme; counting it our chief business in life to extend the influence of Christ in society, constantly praying and toiling that the kingdom of God may come, and His will be done on earth as it is in heaven. To this end we agree to labor for the promotion of educational and denominational enterprises, the support of missions, the success of Sunday schools, and evangelistic efforts for the salvation of the world. And may the God of peace sanctify us wholly, and preserve us blameless unto the coming of

our Lord Jesus Christ.
