Starting point

Rotterdam is a main port for Europe. With the interest of a main port comes a recognizable figure like the new Central Station from the city of Rotterdam. The Central Station was rebuilt in 2014 into a modern charac-teristic junction according to the urban development in Rotterdam. The new station is focussed on innovative and sustainable services. The roof contains a surface of 10.000 m2 solar panels, which are able to excite enough power for the whole station. The yield of the solar panels is simi-lar to the energy consumption of 100 households per year. Besides the use of solar energy there are other sustainable innovations applied in Rotterdam Central like heat cold storage and mirrors in the roof for extra daylight.

The tour goes south towards Eendrachtsplein. In front of Rotterdam Cen-tral there are green tramlines. The purpose of the sustainable green tramlines is to reduce heat stress and extra water storage during rainfall. Because of the green surface the rain will infiltrate into the ground water where it is disconnected from the sewer. This will lower the load on the sewer during rainfall.

Alongside the Westersingel from Central Station to Eendrachtsplein there is a sustainable waterway with adjacent inundated area that nowadays functions for public space. This manner of the multifunctional use of spa-tial planning according to recreation and emergency water storage is a perfect example for a sustainable city.

Schouwburgplein is part of the project “7 Square Endeavour”, one of the spearheads of this project is to manage energy in a smart and innovative way. Schouwburgplein will be 100% climate neutral in 2030, and in 4 years (2020) already 40%. This will be done through energizing, energy storage and using energy in a more efficient way. As well as getting energy out of sewer water, using grey water, green roofs, biodiversity etc. The initiator of this project is the Rotterdamse Schouwburg and it is established in cooperation with i.a. municipality of Rotterdam, Arcadis, Dura Vermeer and Eneco.

The Lijnbaan was one of the first modern (1953) shopping streets in Europe. Now a days the Lijnbaan is still a care-free area what makes shopping really comfortable. As well as the partially covering on the street, even on rainy days you will be dry!

On the 7th floor of Schiekade 189 you can find Op Het Dak. A green oasis in the center of Rotterdam. This breakfast- lunchroom bar will be a sur-prising stop during your city tour. Their rooftop garden is one of Europe’s biggest eatable roof gardens. They use as much vegetables and fruits from their own garden as possible. All other food and drinks are from local suppliers. Beside the short supply chain, we can call Op Het Dak sustain-able because they reuse an empty area. The Schieblock has been empty for years, now there are new innovative companies coming in.

In today’s tight economic times architects are discovering new ways to get project off the ground. This bridge connect two parts of the city that were previously cut off by roads with heavy traffic. But it’s not a city proj-ect. To start the construction decades earlier there is looked for an alter-native way of financing the bridge, citizens could invest to finance from their own pocket. Each piece of wood bears the name of the person who helped paying for it. The footbridge has two unusual attributes. It is all wood with 17.000 individual planks and it is funded by individual dona-tions. By making the area walkable again, the hope is to attract shops, restaurants and small businesses to this area. It also links up a series of individual public projects, including Op Het Dak and a new park.

Hofboogjes is one of the sustainable structures in Rotterdam. Before the Hofboogjes were used as railway bridge. After years of being unused, the Hofboogjes are renovated into a new shopping and restaurant area. Many people can take a break under the Hofboogjes. It is recommended to visit café ‘Lokaal’, where you can drink a coffee of local roots. The bridge and store make a harmony, and it gives us antique and peaceful mood. This form of sustainable renovation also boosts local economies and makes these kind of structure worth conserving by locals.

Architects and urban designers are responding to the threat of rising sea levels by welcoming water into cities. It’s a new relationship with water.By creating a water park for the community, it will fed entirely by storm water and making the water the main feature, the world’s first ‘water square’. Storm water is channeled through stainless steel gutters into the park and transforming it into small ‘’lakes’’. While when it is not raining and its dry, the deep basin is a sport pit as well as a sort of urban theater where people can hang out.

There is a local product shop ‘Uit je eigen stad’ next to Centraal Station. Uit je eigen stad sells local products like wine, bread, syrup and statio-nery. You can also enjoy coffee and tea there. All the products are from Rotterdam or nearby the city. These kind of products are fresh, safety and reliable. The store has two aims, activate local economies and reducing costs of transport. Therefor it would be helpful to prevent envi-ronmental damage from car and ship. There is an outdoor market every weekend from 10:00 to 16:30. You can get fresh vegetable, flower and organic Juice at the market.
