Facebook Group!• I've started a Facebook Group named Texas Tech Physics 1408,

Summer II, 2011.– I'll try to post announcements & topics of class interest on the Group Wall.

– Please join so you can post course-related questions & comments on the Wall. The idea is that others can see your posts & comment themselves.

– This may start discussions about the course between some of you & between you & me.

• This is a "private" Group restricted to students in

TTU Physics 1408, Summer II, 2011 ONLY!– This means that you have to ask me (Group Administrator) to join before you will be

able to post. I'll check that you are registered in the course before I let you join.

• I'm fairly new to Facebook, so I may not do everything in the most efficient way.

Physics 1408• Email Distribution List!

– It is VERY important that you have an email address & that I have it!!!

– I will use the email distribution list to make important class announcements!!!

– It is VERY important that you check your email DAILY!!! (PLEASE tell me if you change your email address!)

Math Co- & Pre-Requisites • Math is the Language of Physics!! But, this is NOT a math

course!! I simply will not have time to teach math to you! I must assume that you know it! Primary difficulties with the course are often math-related!!

• Co-Requisite: Math 1351: Calculus I– Or an equivalent course somewhere else!

• Assumed Pre-Requisites:– Math 1320 & 1321: Algebra & Trigonometry– Or: Math 1550: Pre-Calculus, Or equivalent courses elsewhere.

• Take advantage of the:

Math Review in Appendices A& B!

Physics 1408 Laboratory

• This no-credit lab is a required co-requisite!• IF you drop the lecture you MUST drop the lab also!

(Exceptions: Ask in Physics Office, Room 101)

ATTENTION! LAB SCHEDULE

LABS MEET THIS WEEK!!

LABS BEGIN WEDNESDAY JULY 6!

NOTE: COME to lab prepared to start, including already having your lab manual!!!

Page 11: Welcome to Physics 1408!!. A & E's Top 10 People of the Past Millennium Physicists are listed in red!! 1. Johann Gutenberg 2. Isaac Newton 3. Martin Luther

Where to Go for Help?? • See the syllabus, which covers this!

– See Me!!! Room 18. • During office hours or not (I’m usually not rigid

about these). Or call me on the phone. Or email me! I respond to email!!!

– See your Lab TA!!! • There will be office hours for this person.

– Get a tutor!!! • The Physics Department Office (Room 101) has an

approved list.

Where to Go for Help?? – Your Fellow Students!!!

• A very effective strategy is to work on homework and to study for quizzes & exams together in a group.

• This is how professionals work in the “real world”.

– Help Sessions!! • I may arrange weekly Help Sessions.

– The Internet!!! • There are HUGE numbers of Physics Help Web sites! Using Google.com

& typing in “Physics Help” gives about 34,000 hits!!!! I encourage you to try out some. Page 3 of the syllabus lists some Physics Help Web pages.

– Class Web Page!

Bottom Line on Help

• IF YOU NEED HELP, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE MANY HELP RESOURCES AVAILABLE!!

• If you need help & don’t use these resources, only YOU are to blame!

To Succeed in this Course • See document: “How to succeed in Physics by Really Trying”

• READ the book, which cost you many $$$!– It’s most effective to read the material BEFORE

I lecture over it.

• WORK the assigned homework problems!!– Before looking at the solutions. Copying the solutions

will NOT teach you physics.

• WORK extra problems!

Page 15: Welcome to Physics 1408!!. A & E's Top 10 People of the Past Millennium Physicists are listed in red!! 1. Johann Gutenberg 2. Isaac Newton 3. Martin Luther

To Succeed in this Course • COME TO CLASS!!

• There is a correlation between attendance & grade! Also, skipping means that you are WASTING the tuition & fees that you (or someone) paid! With tuition & fees for a full-time student, each class meeting costs about $26.12. Each time you skip, you are throwing away about $26.12!! After a while this adds up! My lectures may not

be entertaining or brilliant, but I do expose you to the material.

• ATTENDANCE!!!− THE WEEKEND DOESN’T BEGIN ON THURSDAY

(or end on Monday)!!!! FRIDAY IS A REGULAR CLASS DAY (as is Monday)!!!

On-Line Homework• Commercial Website Mastering Physics

– On-line homework will be assigned & graded at the Mastering Physics site.

– Doing homework is the most effective means of learning physics, which is impossible without working problems!

– Once you are registered at Mastering Physics, you’ll be able to get assignments & submit homework. I’ll ATTEMPT to post assignments at the beginning of each chapter. They will be due at 11:30pm about a week later. You’ll be able to get answers after the due date.

Mastering Physics– To access Mastering Physics, login at

https://www.masteringphysics.com/. Instructions are in your Student Access Kit & I’ve passed them out. I’ll also briefly discuss them starting on the next slide.

– If you don’t have the Student Access Kit which comes with a new book, you can purchase one on the Mastering Physics site.

Please do this ASAP!

– NOTE: This site is not at TTU & you should give yourself plenty of time before

the deadline for submitting answers–sometimes the network can be slow or down.

INSTRUCTIONSStudent Registration & Enrollment in our Course on Mastering Physics

A. Go to Mastering Physics: http://www.masteringphysics.com.

B. On the right side of the first page is the word “Register”. Below that is a link, “Students”. Click on that link & follow the instructions there. The website should guide you through this process.

C. To go further, you need a student access code. This should have been provided if you bought a new textbook at one of the bookstores. If you bought a used book or if you bought a  new book on-line, you'll probably have to buy one. You can do this on-line by clicking “Buy Now”.

D. As you go through the registration, you will create a personal student account.

E. To enroll in my course, you must enter the Course ID, NOT the course title.

Our Course ID is MPMYLES43904 This is case sensitive! After entering this, you should be allowed to register on the site for access to the course

assignments.

F. Our text is Physics For Scientists & Engineers, (4th Ed) by D.C. Giancoli.

When you register, choose that book if you are asked about the book!

That's the book that on-line assignments will be from. NOTE: There is another book by Giancoli there that is an option. It is NOT calculus based! DON'T REGISTER FOR IT! Once registered, you can access the area for our book.

THE THEME OF THE COURSE IS

NEWTON’S LAWS OF MOTION!!

Essentially all topics we will discuss this session are related directly or indirectly to

Newton’s Laws!!
