A little about PRES….Pelham Road’s mission, in partnership with the home and community,

is to Prepare; Respect; Enrich; Succeed.

PRES!From the moment you come in the door and walk down the halls, you know that you are in a SPECIAL place called Pelham Road Elementary School. It is a unique blend of innovative use of technology and very strong community support.   Enrichment activities in language arts, math, social studies, science, music, art and physical education provide unlimited opportunities for all the children and communities it represents. Our faculty/staff are outstanding and are on hand to help your child to do his/her best in every possible way. We pride ourselves that our main emphasis, in addition to raising the bar academically, is to nurture your children in a safe and caring environment.

Pelham Road is one of Palmetto’s Finest, a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence and an Exemplary Writing Award School. Our school has also been awarded the prestigious National PTA School of Excellence Parent Involvement Award and The Red Carpet Award.

A little about PRES….

We recently celebrated our 40th birthday!

We are called the All Stars because our building was

originally laid out in a star formation with each wing

being called a community of learners!

We have many former students as teachers!

Our class sizes range from 19‐27 based on the grade.

Car Line, Bus and Walker Procedures

Page 6: Welcome to Pelham Road Elementary School!A little about PRES…. We recently celebrated our 40th birthday! We are called the All Stars because our building was originally laid out

Car Line Procedures‐The first rule of Car Line is  Patience… Patience!

Morning Car Line Process You are not allowed to drop off earlier than 7:15am as the school is not staffed at that time. This is very important to

the safety of the children. The far right and the middle lanes are for car line use.

Because there are two lanes safety patrols will alternate the lanes to allow drop off.  Please pay attention to the safety patrols… remember they are kids too! You should pull down as far as you can. Patrols will open doors on the right side of the cars so if possible place your kids on that side of the car to exit. Waiving good bye is great, but try not to hold up car line....

The left lane is used to access the parking lot. Traffic should never stop in this lane. The gate is open in the morning from 7:15am‐7:45am. If the gate is locked you will need to either get back in the car

line or park on the left in the grass area and walk carefully through the parking lot. Afternoon Car Line Process

Each child is assigned a car line number. You will need to pick this up at Meet the Teacher (08/18 2‐5pm). If you are unable to come to Meet the Teacher please visit the main office for assistance with your car line number. You will not be able to pick up your child without this number. You will put this number in your car windshield. Anyone picking up your child will need this number!

Children will watch the monitors in their classrooms for their car number (don’t worry the teachers will help them). When their number is called they will meet the safety patrols in the grand hall and the patrols will walk them to the front of the school for dismissal. The children are called in groups which are determined by your placement in the car line. Cars begin to line up around 2:15pm for dismissal. All children must be picked up by 2:50pm.

The gate is closed started at 2:00pm. If the gate is locked you will need to either get back in the car line or park on the left in the grass area and walk carefully through the parking lot.

If your child does not come out in their group DO NOT panic. Simply pull back into the school parking lot and come into the front office. Sometimes little eyes do not always see their numbers!

Each car should follow these rules:‐ Have your car line number in your windshield‐ Do not switch lanes‐ Parking in the church parking lot is not permitted ‐ Our police officer is there to help with traffic flow not to allow families to cross the street‐Please obey the safety patrols‐Cell phone use is prohibited in the car line

Page 7: Welcome to Pelham Road Elementary School!A little about PRES…. We recently celebrated our 40th birthday! We are called the All Stars because our building was originally laid out

Bus Procedures At the end of the day, bus riders are dismissed from their classrooms to the school

cafeteria. Each bus rider is assigned to a bus route number and is given a bus route tag. K‐5 and 1st graders must have this tag in order to get on the bus. In addition, you must have your copy of this tag in order to pick them up at the bus stop.  It is critical that the school have a valid phone number for you in the event that your bus is delayed and the school system needs to contact you.

You should have already received a call from the transportation department to inform you of the stop and time. If not, you need to call them ASAP!

Please visit the transportation table at Meet the Teacher for more information!

Each bus rider is expected to:  respect the bus driver  listen and follow the bus driver’s directions  keep hands, arms, legs, and objects to himself and inside the bus  refrain from cursing, name calling, gestures, or loud talking or bullying  refrain from pushing, shoving, or annoying other students  refrain from eating, drinking, chewing gum, or littering  obey all points of the Discipline Code

Pick up for After School is in the bus line by the side of the school cafeteria. You should not pick up your child before 3pm as it will interfere with the bus line.

Page 13: Welcome to Pelham Road Elementary School!A little about PRES…. We recently celebrated our 40th birthday! We are called the All Stars because our building was originally laid out

Classroom Procedures You should come to Meet the Teacher and Open House in September to learn about classroom procedures.

The best way to communicate is directly with your teacher via notes, phone, email.

Please refrain from discussion of “teachers”. EVERY student is different and EVERY situation is different.

Page 14: Welcome to Pelham Road Elementary School!A little about PRES…. We recently celebrated our 40th birthday! We are called the All Stars because our building was originally laid out

Kindergarten Classroom Tips Each classroom is a little different so check with your teacher, but most classes have: Rest time Snack time

Kindergarten has a separate playground. The children will visit there once a day (weather permitting) and will also walk the track.

Page 15: Welcome to Pelham Road Elementary School!A little about PRES…. We recently celebrated our 40th birthday! We are called the All Stars because our building was originally laid out

Attendance Policy South Carolina law states that students must be in school 170 days in order to be considered

for promotion to the next grade.  Any child who misses MORE than ten days of school without lawful excuses may be retained.  The written excuse for the absence must be sent to the teacher no later than two days after the student returns to school.

1. Personal illness shall be verified by an excuse from the parent or a physician within two (2) days of the return of the student to school.  No more than ten (10) days of parent excuses will be accepted.  Only a physician’s statement will excuse absence in excess of ten (10) days.

2. Request for absences for religious holidays must be made in writing in advance to the principal.  Absences for religious observances do not count against perfect attendance recognition.

TARDY POLICY  Students who arrive late to school, after 8:00 a.m., are tardy.  School begins promptly at 8:00

a.m. Students who are late must stop by the office to be recorded present and to receive a pass to class. The first fifteen minutes of each day are very important, because this is the time that teachers explain the morning work. If your child misses this time, the teacher must stop instruction for all the other students to explain the assignment to your child or let your child try to get this information from another student. Either way there is a loss of instructional time for all. Traffic backs up in front of the school by 7:45 a.m. It would be a good idea if you try to get into the traffic line before that time.
