Pastor’s CornerOur first reading this Sunday reminds us that God did not give us misfortune in our life. Since the beginning he provides us all his abundant graces. But we people don’t know how to remember God by keeping our action pleasing in His sight so that we may still be living in His graces. He wants us to be the recipient of His unending love and grace.

David was reminded by God through the prophet Nathan, that his action was no longer pleasing in God’s sight. He acted evil in the Lords sight by taking Uriah’s wife and putting Uriah to be killed by the sword of the Ammonites. He never cares about his evil plan and action just to achieve his worldly and fleshly desire. He takes of what is not supposed to be his.

A similar attitude of the greedy person in this world is that he/she does not care about his/her evil action toward his/her neighbor, just to get his/her worldly and fleshly desire, by hurting his/her neigh-bor’s feeling and taking of what does not belong to him/her.

This saying is true: “what you sow is what you reap”. If you sow evil, you will definite-ly reap evil. If you sow good, you will reap good. Amen.

We Welcome All Visitors to Our CelebrationWhile Holy Communion may only be received by prepared Catholics, for our non-Catholic guests you are welcome to join the line to walk towards the priest or deacon to receive a special blessing: Simply cross your arms over your chest to receive a blessing.

Feast of St. AnthonyToday, Sunday, June 12th, our Parish celebrates the Feast of St. Anthony of Padua. The humble and popular Saint, who knew how to share his deep knowledge of God with his listeners and through God’s grace, touched many hearts bringing them to conversion. During the 12:00 pm Mass, we will bless the Saint Anthony’s Bread which will be made avail-able to take as a reminder to share with the poor our own poverty and need of God’s love and care.

Our diocese will take up the Peter’s Pence Col-lection on the weekend of June 25-26, which pro-vides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including victims of war, op-pression, and disasters. Join our Holy Father as a witness of charity to those who are suffering.

Igniting the SpiritA man got two wishes from God. He asked for the BEST DRINK and the BEST WOMAN.

Next moment...he had HOLY WATER and MOTHER TERESA next to him! Moral lesson: Be specific!

ACA Goal Reached!!!Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal with your prayers and pledges. Presently, over $41,000 has been pledged, and $33,068 collected. Our parish had a Diocesan goal of $33,000. All of the monies collected over that goal stay here in the parish. As you know, from your own budget, the monthly expenses keep increasing, so these additional funds are welcomed.

Thank you again for your support.

Feast of the Sacred Heart of JesusSunday, June 19th, our Sacred Heart Society is sponsoring a Special Celebration at the 10:30 AM Mass, followed by a reception in the church hall. The human heart has always been considered as the true symbol of Love, because love is necessary to us, as is our physical heart. When we celebrate Jesus’ Heart we celebrate His infinite personal love for us. Jesus’ love made Him accept death on a cross rather than abandoning us to the evil one. To Jesus’ love: honor, praise, and thanksgiving!

BACKGROUND OF THE LITURGYEleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Christian tradition calls upon us to hate sin, but to love the sinner. Church history is filled with the most horren-dous of sins. And it is filled with the mercy of God who forgives even the worst sinners. Forgiveness is available to anyone who is humble enough to admit guilt, who has faith in the redemption of Christ, and who seeks to change his life.

The first reading today tells of one who sinned grievously, but who later humbled himself to seek forgiveness. The gospel tells of one who sinned seriously but who failed to recognize his sin, and who accused everyone else of sinning. The second reading (the continuous reading) may fit in with this theme: We are saved from our sins not by any obedience to Law, but by the redemption brought by the death and resurrection of Jesus.

The first reading follows the famous story of the adultery of David and Bathsheba. David had lusted after her, while her husband (Uriah) was away at war. David committed adultery with her. To cover it up, he called Uriah home, thinking that Uriah would sleep with his wife and David’s sin of adultery would be covered up.

Uriah, a pagan, is more pious than David. Uriah says that he cannot enjoy himself while the king’s troops are in battle. He sleeps outside. David tries again. Again Uriah refuses to go home. David then compounds his sin with murder. He sends a message to the front to put Uriah in the thick of fighting, and then withdraw from him. Uriah is killed. David marries Bathsheba, thinking that he has covered his tracks well.

The prophet Nathan comes to David and tells him a parable of a rich man who had a guest. Nearby lived a

very poor man whose only possession was a little ewe lamb. The rich man, instead of taking an ani-mal from his many flocks, stole the poor man’s only possession for his feast.

David became angry and told Nathan, “Bring that man to me; he deserves death.” Nathan pointed the finger at David and said, “You are the man!” David had everything, yet he stole his neighbor’s wife and then killed him. This is where today’s reading takes up.

Nathan recounts that David had everything. God had taken the kingdom from Saul and given it to David. In return, David showed contempt for God. David becomes penitent. He confesses his sin. Be-cause of his penitence, he is forgiven.

At first, it seems as if the sin Simon the Pharisee in the gospel is little or no sin at all. He didn’t kill anyone. He didn’t commit adultery. He was re-spectable and he kept the precepts of the Torah. Strangely, however, the liturgy today would seem to make him a great sinner.

Why? Because he was so arrogant, so smug, so self-satisfied, and so condemnatory of others. He failed to show Jesus the ordinary marks of hospi-tality. This would always be a snub. But to do it to one whom everyone held in esteem was a deliber-ate affront.

In addition, he had a haughty attitude in saying that Jesus couldn’t very well be a prophet, since he didn’t seem to know what kind of little tramp this was who anointed Jesus’ feet. And his attitude toward the woman is one of contempt. He is like the Pharisee in that other parable — the one who praised God that he was not like the rest of people, including the sinful Publican.

Sadly, some of us can do right things for the wrong reasons. We can even be moral and respectable, but we are so because we want honor for our-selves. We can do good in order to be noticed, in order to be honored, in order to be appreciated and thanked.

If so, we are guilty of hubris, an arrogant and snob-bish pride. If so, our prayer and our virtue are no higher than the ceiling. Simon did not recognize his sinfulness. In context, his sin was greater than

that of the streetwalker. He would not — and could not — be forgiven because he failed to humble himself.

We need to reflect on our sinfulness and our need for forgiveness. If we do everything right, we might still be a sinner. We might be doing right for snob-bish reasons. That is not virtue. Sometimes it hap-pens that a person will come to Confession and tell how good he/she has been. He might say, “It’s been a year since my last Confession, and I have nothing to confess.”

That person has no insight, into his life. He has no humility. He cannot be forgiven because he can-not confess his basic unworthiness and sinfulness. On the other hand, today’s Mass should give real sinners hope: The Lord simply asks that we ac-knowledge our need for his forgiveness because we recognize our sinfulness. We can always have confidence in his mercy and his forgiveness pro-vided we acknowledge our need and our sinful-ness.

The second reading obliquely fits this theme. We are not justified by keeping the Law or Torah. We are not justified by our own self-righteousness. We are justified because of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. If we die to self (in baptism and in living our life), we can live in Christ Jesus. Then and only then can we proclaim, “I live now, not I, but Christ lives in me.”

Let us pray that we shall always recognize our need for the healing balm of God’s mercy and for-giveness.

Please, Come to Church Dressed Appropriately! To be modestly and tastefully dressed is a sign of respect for God, for our selves, and for others. It’s a false assumption that God does not care how we dress. Jesus told us, “Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do it to me.” If our attire is indecently provocative (short shorts, strapless, backless, spaghetti strap dresses/tops, or displaying cleavage), displaying unwholesome graphics (skulls, advertisements, scantly clad people) or tattered, it becomes offensive to our brothers and sisters who are worshipping the Lord and therefore offensive to God’s Majesty. Ask this question: “Would you dress this way before God?” You are! He sees everything and you are in His house.
