Church Tour – All Are Welcome For a tour of our Church, contact Shannon Langer at 481-5115.

OUR PARISH

The wise seek Him to Worship Him

Today the Church recalls the magi or wise men who came to worship the Lord Jesus. When

they found Him they humbled themselves and worshiped the Lord. After they prostrated

themselves and worshiped Him, they offered Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

But they offered Him first themselves and worshiped Him first. When we offer ourselves to

God first in worship (love) then we offer Him our gifts.

A Catholic Journey through Recovery

The Pastoral Council is very pleased to announce that we will inaugurate a new ministry, Catholic in Recovery, in early January. The twice-monthly meet-ings will focus on the healing of addiction and un-healthy attachments. Together we will aim to supple-ment each other’s' personal recovery with a sacra-mental understanding of God's mercy using the tradi-tions of the Catholic Church. During these meetings we'll tie together liturgical themes, scripture from Sunday's Mass readings and twelve step recovery principles. Loved ones of those struggling with ad-diction or unhealthy attachments are welcome to par-ticipate. Our first meeting will be held on Monday, January 7, from 6:00 - 7:00 pm in St. Paul’s room. Confidentiality will be fully supported. Please join these joyful meetings full of honesty, openness, and gratefulness. If you have any questions related to our Catholic in Recovery ministry, please contact Jenny Teeters at [email protected] or 916-265-3935.

Feast of the Epiphany

W hat happened on Epiphany? More to the point, what is an epiphany? An epiphany is an appearance or a manifestation espe-

cially of a deity. On Epiphany we celebrate the manifes-tation of Christ to the Magi who were gentiles, or non-Jews. This feast originated from the Eastern Church. The symbols for Epiphany are three crowns, three gifts, Wise Men, and a five-pointed star.

There are many things we could do to help our fami-lies understand that Christmas is not merely one day. The Wise Men can travel around the room until Epipha-ny. During those twelve days of Christmas they were en route. An Epiphany Door Blessing is also a tradition in many places. This door blessing was done to bless the home for the year. The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us that every blessing praises God and prays for his gifts. This type of blessing is part of our baptismal priesthood and helps to build the ecclesial life of the Church. Below you will find the blessing.

Leader: Peace be to this house.

All: And to all who live here.

Leader: Bless, O Lord, this household and family, and allow all of us who live in this home to find in it a shelter of peace and health. Inspire each of us to devel-op our individual talents and to contribute wisdom and good works for the benefit of the whole family. Make our house a haven for us all, and a place of warmth and caring for all our friends who come to visit us. Enlight-en us with the brilliance of your Epiphany star, so that, as we go into the world, we might clearly see our way to You and discover You in our work and play. This we ask to your glory and in the power of your kingship.

All: For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory now and forever. Amen.

Write the following inscription over the door in the order of the following blessing (20 + C + M + B + 19):

The three Wise men, (C) Caspar, (M) Melchior, and (B) Balthasar followed the star of God’s Son who became human (20) two thousand and (19) nineteen years ago. (++) May Christ bless our home (++) and remain with us throughout the new year. Amen

“May the Virgin Mary who received the Magi at Beth-lehem, help us to raise our gaze from ourselves, to let ourselves be guided by the star of the Gospel to meet Jesus, and to be able to abase ourselves to adore him. LIVE, LEARN &ENJOY YOUR FAITH

Join representatives from Catholic Funeral & Cemetery Services, a Ministry of the Diocese of Sacramento, they will be giving a brief presentation after each of the Masses the weekend of February 2 and 3, 2019. The presentations will be held in St. John’s Hall, where you can get all of your questions answered like; can we be cremated? What is the difference between Funeral and Cemetery? I think I have it all taken care of, I have a burial rite already at the Cemetery. Who picks up the deceased if they pass away at home? What are the Church’s teachings around being buried? Why is a Catholic Cemetery important? We are here as your resource through one of life’s most difficult times. For more information, please contact Nicole Zamora, Director of Community Outreach, at (916) 840-2138 or by e-mail at [email protected].

STEWARDSHIP

“…the Gentiles are co-heirs, members of the same body, and co-partners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the Gospel.” (Ephesians 3:6)

Today we celebrate that Christ came to all of us, not just the Hebrews. He has given each of us unique gifts. We all have different yet equally valuable roles to play in the Body of Christ. Pray daily and ask God how He wants you to use your gifts so that we may all “be one”.

Estate Planning

A legacy gift to Our Lady of the Assump-tion is one of the most rewarding and far-reaching investments you can make. Our Lady of the Assumption takes the trust you place in us seriously. We are grateful to those who have included us in their plan for the distribution of their assets af-

ter death. We pray that you will keep Our Lady of the Assumption Parish and/or School in mind. We invite you to contact the Parish Office if you wish to learn more about how you can include us in your estate plan-ning.

New Year’s Resolutions and Stewardship

T he beginning of the year is a popular time for personal reassessment. The earth has finished

one more revolution around the sun, and swings low over the cold January horizon, just like last year. The days are shorter, and an evening of introspection seems more inviting. Somehow, when we take down the old calendar and tack up the new, we sense an opportunity to make a fresh start.

To make the best of this opportunity — which, truthfully, exists in June just as it does in January — it is useful to make firm commitments. It’s even more useful to write them down. These resolutions, kept in a desk drawer or on the refrigerator door, are a “hard copy” of our best inten-tions for self-improvement. They’re signposts that redirect our lives to-wards good, and towards God.

New Year’s resolutions are often focused on personal health — losing weight, relaxing more, or smoking less. It is certainly important, of course, to take good care of our bodies. But Christianity offers us a fuller concept of self improvement. St. Paul reminds us that both the body and the soul need an ex-ercise program. In fact, every aspect of our persons — physical, mental, spiritual, emotional — can benefit from an annual self-audit.

Some people have taken to heart this multi-faceted concept of the self, and each year make one resolution for each area. For instance, one could resolve to join a Rosary prayer group to work on spirituality, or take a continuing education course to build mental skills. Still, others use the three theological virtues — faith, hope and love — to guide their resolution-making process.

By now you may have discerned a similarity be-tween New Year’s resolutions and stewardship com-mitments. First, we use a similar method to think about stewardship, by breaking it down into more specific concepts — time, talent and treasure. Second, to be-come better stewards, we write down our commitments. We record our good intentions to clarify exactly what they are — and to remind us of our commitment on the evenings when the Rosary group interferes with a bowl game.

Any serious commitment shares the same compo-nents — it is specific, and it is written. From marriages to mortgages, treaties to trades — serious resolutions are spelled out, both literally and figuratively.

But even more important than the methodology of a commitment is the heart of the person who makes it. Even the most well-written job descriptions are useless unless there is someone to do the job well! Let us pray that this new year is a time of grace and wisdom for those of us who seek to recommit our lives to our fami-ly, our parish, and our God.
