Our School Day

• Classroom doors open at 8:25 a.m.

• Class work begins promptly at 8:25 a.m.

• Students arriving after 8:35 a.m. will be marked tardy.

Arrival Procedures• Parents will continue to drop off their child using the

driveway drop-off, at the front gate, or the side gate by the cafeteria. In order to ease the drop-off process we highly encourage for you to use the driveway in the morning.

• Use the right lanes to drop off students. The left lane is for cars exiting the drop off lane only.

• Please make sure students are dropped off with ample time if they are having breakfast in the cafeteria.

• Please drive through the drop off lanes slowly.

• Please use the crosswalk when crossing the street.

• Do not drop off students in the middle of the street.

Dismissal

• Our school day ends at 3:05 p.m. Students will be dismissed from their classroom by their teachers. Please pick up your child on time. There is no supervision after 3:35 p.m.

• Parents please be advised that you must have the dismissal paper in order for the teacher to dismiss your child. Distribute the passes to family and friends that will be picking up your child.

• If you forget your dismissal slip, you must go to the front office with your ID and receive a new dismissal slip. Please try to remember as the office gets very busy in the afternoons.

• Walkers need to walk home. Walkers cannot stand around in front of the school or driveway.

• All dismissal changes must be completed in writing prior to dismissal. E-mails, phone calls, etc. will not be accepted.

• No pets will be allowed on school grounds.

Parking

Parents must park on the grass.

Do not park in teacher parking lot. It is strictly for staff members.

Absences

• Every absence must be followed by a written note from home on the day that the student returns to school.

• The note must include the following information:– Student’s name– Date(s) of absence– Reason for absence– Parent’s signature

• After 10 absences, must be followed by DOCTOR’S note only.

School Board Rule 5200 defines “Excused” school absences as:

• Student illness

• Medical appointment

• Death in the family

• Observance of a religious holiday or service when it is mandated for all members of a faith that such a holiday or service be observed.

• School-sponsored event or activity previously approved.

• Attendance at a center under Department of Children and Families supervision.

• Other individual student absences beyond the control of the parent or student, as determined and approved by the principal or principal’s designee.

School Board Rule Absences Absences School Board Policy -5200

• The student shall have a reasonable amount of time, up to three (3) school days, to complete make-up work for excused absences.

• Any student who has been absent from school will be marked as an unexcused absence until he/she submits the required documentation. Failure to provide required documentation within three (3) school days upon the return to school will results in an unexcused absence.

• Unexcused absences do not require that the teacher provide make-up work for the student.

Absences

• As a reminder, after 5 (excused/unexcused) cumulative absences the student will be referred to the counselor and assistant principal per the school attendance plan.

Late Arrival/Early Dismissal

• If your child has more than five late arrivals or early dismissals (total), they will not receive a Perfect Attendance Certificate for the 9 week period.

Early Sign Out

Early Sign Out- School Board Policy -5200

• Students are to be counted in attendance only if they are actually present for at least two (2) hours of the day or engaged in a school-approved educational activity which constitutes a part of the instructional program for the student. Therefore, a student Released Early before 10:20 am, for students in grades K-1 and 10:35 am for students in grades 2-5, will be marked absent for the day.

• The early release of students causes disruption to the academic performance of all students and may create safety and security concerns. No students shall be released within the final 30 minutes of the school day unless authorized by the Principal or Principal’s designee (i.e., emergency, sickness). Students will not be dismissed after 2:35 p.m. (Wednesday’s- 1:20 p.m.).

Homework• Students are to copy the HW from the board in

their planner each day.

• Homework for 4th grade is 60 minutes per school board policy.

• The purpose for homework is to reinforce what is being taught in class, review previously taught lessons, or prerequisite skill.

• Parents should encourage and support their scholar, but should not give excessive assistance.

• Students missing 3 Homework

assignments will be issued a detention.

HW-Reading/Language Arts

• In addition to the regularly assigned HW, students are asked to read for 30 minutes.

• Various Spelling/Vocabulary practice.

• i-Ready sessions per week (30 minutes).

• Various Writing practice.

Math Homework

• Math Workbook page daily (front/back)

• Please use Math Strategies when doing HW such as underline key words, draw models, etc…

• It is very important that students show their work.

• i-Ready lessons (30 minutes ).

• Reflex (3 green light sessions).

Assessments

• At least one grade a week per subject

MyOn Reader

• Students in grades 3-5 will no longer have AR goals. Instead, students will be able to take reading comprehension tests through MyOnReader or Book Adventures.

• Students will be taking a placement test in school to determine their reading level.

• MyOn access is through the student portal and can be done at home.

Technology Incentive Plan • Students will be required to complete i-Ready for

Reading and in Math, 30 minutes EACH.

• The i-Ready goals per marking period:– 1st & 2nd Nine Weeks- 6.5 hours in Reading, 6.5 hours in Math

– 3rd Nine Weeks- 4.5 hours in Reading , 4.5 hours in Math

– 4th Nine Weeks- 4 hours in Reading, 4 hours in Math

• Incentives will occur every nine weeks and will include one of the following : movie, dance, ice-cream party, etc.

Single Sign On

• We will continue with the single sign on policy.

• This means that your child will only be able to access i-Ready, and any other district curriculum through their portal, including textbooks and grades.

• In order to access the student portal students will log into dadeschools.net

• Find student icon.

• Enter username and password.

Mornings– 8:00 a.m.- 8:30 a.m.- everyday

Afternoons- 3:05 p.m.-3:25 p.m- Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday

Tuesday Folders

• Take Home Tuesday Folders will be given to all students school wide.

• Important school notices will be sent home in this folder every Tuesday.

• These folders must be returned every Wednesday.

School Uniforms

• Students must wear a school uniform each day.

• Make sure that the school top (blue or yellow polo) and are worn with khaki colored bottoms.

• Friday shirts can be any NBB school spirited shirt; field day shirt from last year, Friday yellow or blue t-shirt. If jeans are worn on Fridays, they must be solid blue jeans with no holes or cuts; solid blue jean shorts (appropriate in length) may also be worn Fridays.

Field Trip Uniforms

A yellow (this year) or blue Friday T-shirt is required for all field trips or school related events for both parents and students.

PTA• Please join the PTA.

• Membership is $10.00.

• This helps the school fund events.

• PTA will sell shirts on WEDNESDAYS after school ONLY in room 26. – Friday T-shirts

– Hoodies

– Long sleeve shirts for cold days.

Breakfast and Lunch

• Please remember to fill out a free/reduced lunch application online.

• Payments can be made in the cafeteria or online (PayPams).

• If your child owes money to the cafeteria, they will receive an alternate lunch (plain turkey sandwich and milk).

• Breakfast is from 7:30- 8:15. The line closes at 8:15. Food CANNOT be taken out of cafeteria.

Birthday Celebrations

• Cupcakes and donuts are the only items allowed for celebrations.

• Only served during lunch.

• Must be a cleared volunteer to enter cafeteria.

NO: balloons, pizza, goody bags, tablecloths or centerpieces!

Conferences/ Concerns

• If you would like to discuss your child’s academic progress, please schedule a parent conference.

• Conferences will not be held outside during dismissal.

• Teachers and/or administration will get back to you within 48 hours.

Parent Portal

• Check your child’s progress by logging onto the portal and viewing grades.

• You will need your child’s ID number and PIN number. The PIN number can be obtained from the main office.

• Students will also access all documents and necessary computer based programs through their student portal.

Volunteers

• Clearance needs to be renewed each year.

• A volunteer number will be needed if you wish to participate in any school related activities including field trips.

• Field trips are CASH ONLY and not refundable. If your child needs to be excluded from a field trip, the money will not be refunded.

• Reminder-Volunteers are selected using a lottery system.

• Please be understanding if you are not selected. Not everyone can attend every time, but we will make an effort to accommodate as many as possible to the best of our ability throughout the year.

Classroom Management

•In order to maintain a positive learning environment, a classroom management plan is in place.

•A behavior plan is used to determine conduct grades.

•Due to behavior issues, a student may be excluded from participating in field trips and/or any other special events.

•All parents must sign and return the New Code of Conduct Acknowledgement.

•Detentions will be served on Wednesday in room 023 (Art Room) from 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. as a means of consequence.

•Parents are responsible for transportation.

• This year the LAFS Reading test, as well as the Math test will be on the computer. Please have your child practice their typing skills.
