The Whi t e Ra j ah
Cock t a i l Pa r t y
The term "White Rajahs" refers to the Brookes, an English
dynasty who founded and ruled the Kingdom of Sarawak
from 1841 to 1946. The White Rajah Cocktail Party will
amaze your guests with the remarkable and sometimes
bizarre history of the White Rajahs, and let them experience
the pomp and splendour of that bygone era.
Standing cocktail reception will be held al-fresco in the
grounds of one of Kuching's historic Brooke-era buildings,
complete with brass band and martial arts performances.
The lush lawns and gardens are perfect for socialising before
taking to the dance floor for the rest of the evening. Wear
something white, bring your dance card to be filled in, and
step back in time to an era of grace and elegance, when the
three Rajahs' party guests included such luminaries as
naturalist Sir Alfred Russel Wallace, novelist W. Somerset
Maugham, and matinee idol Errol Flynn.

Mai n Bazaa rThis is the oldest street in Kuching, dating back to 1864. It represents
the very heart and soul of Kuching’s history. Charming examples of
old Chinese shop house architecture remain, most of which have
been owned by the same families for generations. Historically, tin-
smiths and carpenters started their trade here. Today, Main Bazaar is
best known for having Kuching’s highest number of antique and
handicraft shops. Across the road is the Kuching Waterfront, the first
port of call even for ancient traders. The White Rajahs built their
Astana (palace) on the opposite banks, where it still stands. Today, the
Kuching Waterfront remains the best introduction to Kuching city.
Sar awak R i ve r Cr u i s eThe Sarawak River Cruise is a double-decker cruiser on the Sarawak River

executive board or committee meetings in the middle of the Sarawak River
on board the Equatorial, followed by dinner and cocktails. Here, business

Fa i r y and Wi nd Cave If you have a love of cave exploration, then do not miss the
Fairy cave and Wind cave - two of our strangest – and possibly
haunted limestone caves! Fairy Cave was named for its huge
stalagmite structure which is said to resemble Kuan Yin, the
Chinese Goddess of Mercy. The chambers of Wind Cave have
a mysterious, constant cool breeze blowing all day and all
night. The caves are in the heart of Bau, a famous “gold
mining” town, which also gained infamy as the bloody scene
of the Chinese Rebellion of 1857.

Abandoned fishing nets piled high on the boat ramp may
not be anyone’s idea of the catch of the day but for the
volunteer divers taking part in this CSR activity, it was a
beautiful sight because it meant these nets would no
longer pose a danger to ocean life. One of the aims of the
Hiyoshi Maru wreck clean-up was to highlight the
significant threat posed by marine debris on ocean
environments and eco-systems.
The historical value of three Japanese WWII shipwrecks which carries much significance not only for Malaysia, but Borneo as a whole. The Hiyoshi Maru, Katori Maru and destroyer Sagiri were actively used during the Japanese invasion of Borneo, and subsequently sunk by Dutch submarines as they were heading to Kuching.

Semenggoh Wi l d l i f e
Rehab i l i t a t i on Cen t r e
The Semenggoh Wildlife Centre was established in 1975 to care
for wild animals which have either been found injured in the
forest, orphaned, or were previously kept as illegal pets. The
centre is situated within the boundaries of the Semenggoh
Nature Reserve, approximately 24 km from Kuching.
The Centre has been a resounding success, caring for almost
1,000 endangered mammals, birds and reptiles from dozens of
different species. However it is the “Heart to Heart with Orang
utan” rehabilitation programme that has made the Centre
famous. In one respect, Semenggoh has been too successful –
so many orang utan have been successfully reintroduced into
the surrounding forest reserve that the forest’s carrying
capacity has been reached, and rehabilitation activities have
been transferred to the Matang Wildlife Centre, part of Kubah
National Park.
