Learning Lab…

Scaffolding Student Growth Preparation for Mastery

A place for learning and fun.

Testing for Mastery

The computer lab is utilized for testing in programs such as Accelerated Reader, Aimsweb, Mindplay, and Study Island. These programs are used to find strengths and areas of weakness in student learning.

Lab Accountability

• I do take grades in this class.

• I am reinforcing what has already been covered in subject area content.

• I am scaffolding learning by covering content at a lower level or sometimes at a higher level depending on the students in each class and their needs.

Phonics and Reading

We work daily to increase our skills in phonics and reading. This is a student’s sketch of the order of events from a story read in class.

Reading StrategiesOur 3rd, 4th, and 5th

graders work on reading passages weekly . They tear down the passages and utilize strategies to become better readers, which prepares them to succeed in Junior High academics.

Fun FridayOur students enjoy Fun Friday in the Lab. We worked on an art project at the beginning of school. Last Friday we played games. In the future we hope to have fun with Legos.

Higher Order Thinking We hope that Friday will be a day that students will learn how to play with others, access the creative side of their brains, and create mental pathways to solve problems.

Fridays are fun…

We like fun!

2nd-5th ELA

• Spelling Homework• Monday – They receive their words and a practice sheet.• Tuesday – They need to use each word in a meaningful

sentence.• Please help them with this if they have trouble. This is so

important in developing their writing skills.• For example: pitch• I will pitch the ball to the batter. (Great!)• I can pitch. (Not a meaningful sentence)• Wednesday – Write their spelling words 3 times each.• Thursday – Study for their spelling test on Friday.• Friday – Test Day!

2nd-5th ELA

• Daily Language Review

• Each day, we work in a language review workbook. Each week they will take a quiz over what we worked on during the week. They need to pay attention in class and work along with me because they will take the weekly packet home on Thursday to look over and prepare for the quiz. You should see this come home in the ELA section of their take home folder.

STAAR Preparation

What YOU can do to help your child become a better reader.

Dates for STAAR tests for Reading

3rd & 4th Grades: May 9, 2016 (Tuesday)

5th Grade: March 29, 2016 (Wednesday)

Retest (if necessary):

May 9, 2015

June 20 & 21

Be a good role model — read yourself and read often to your child. Turn the TV off, get off the computer, silence your cell phone, and pick up a book.

Provide varied reading material — some for reading enjoyment and some with information about hobbies and interests.

Encourage activities that require reading — for example, cooking (reading a recipe), constructing a kite (reading directions), or identifying an interesting bird's nest

Establish a reading time…and everybody read. Example: Select one evening a week for reading (instead of television, video games, computers and other electronics viewing).

Write notes to your school-age child; encourage written responses. (Reading & writing are complementary skills.)

Ask your child to read to a younger sibling.
