Photography I is an introductory photography course focused on and built around the basic elements of art and principles of design. This class was designed to help students develop their eye as a photographer, and to help them learn to speak about photography as an art form. Students will be introduced to photographers from the past and present who work with different concepts and styles. These photographers, concepts and styles will be the driving force behind what we will discuss and create this semester.

Stop crying.

It’s not that big of a deal.

Your homework will almost always be to take 20 photographs showcasing a style, technique or subject matter discussed and practiced in class during the previous week.

It only takes about 2 seconds to take a photograph.

That’s 40 seconds of homework every week.

It only takes about 2 minutes to take a good photograph.

That’s 40 minutes of homework every week.

If you do not bring in photos to work with, you will NOT be allowed to sit at a computer.

It doesn’t matter what other work you have to do: edit old photos, complete written classwork, or complete homework for another class.

PRIVILEGE:RIGHT:

Something granted to you that can be taken away.

Something that is due to a person by law.

It is your RIGHT to get an education in the art of Photography. It is a PRIVILEGE that you get to do so with the wonderful equipment we have (computers, cameras, lights, backdrops, etc.).

As your teacher, I reserve the RIGHT to remove any and all PRIVILEGES you have lost due to lack of effort, lack of preparation, or inappropriate behavior.

SOMETIMES you take all 20 pictures, and have them in on a Monday but… they stink.

DON’T WORRY!!!

1. I will certainly be the first to tell you if/when your photos stink.

2. I will also ask you to reshoot the assignment, because I know you can do better.

3. You’ll get full homework credit for trying, and for being prepared on Monday.

Page 9: Welcome to. If you need to contact me, e-mail: gcrisman@whrhs.org gcrisman@whrhs.org Periods 2 & 4 find me in: Room 3 Periods 3 find me in: Room 110 Period

HOWEVER,if you choose not to reshoot the assignment, and

continue to work with your photographs that stink, I will have to grade them accordingly.

Stinky photos get stinky grades.

If I ask you to reshoot, it is in your best interest to reshoot.

Projects usually consist of 4 edited photos that you worked on throughout the week.

I will show you how to edit them, and what results I’m looking for.

Projects are always counted as a test grade.I look at your 4 photos, and average them together.

Yes, you will have a test grade every week.

You will also lose 5 points from your final project or every day your homework is late… don’t be that guy!

Remember, -5 points for every day

you forget your homework!?

In-Class Challenges are awesome!

You, and a group of 3 other students will be asked to shoot an example of the skill/techniques we are learning about that week (i.e.:

lighting, angles, etc.) using our professional equipment.

One of you will be the photographer, another in charge of lighting, the model will both model and edit the photo, and the printer will

print the photo.

Your class’ photos will be voted on by the other photo class from best to worst. And your class will vote on their photos.

The winners will each get 5 points added to their weekly projects.Second place will get 2 points added to their weekly projects.

As you can see, it gets pretty competitive.

1. Absolutely NO food is allowed in this room. Drinks are ok, but only if they’re kept on the floor.

2. Absolutely NO completing homework for other classes in this room. If I see it happening, I will

tear up your work, and report to your teacher what you’ve done. So, don’t be that guy!

3. There will be NO cell phone usage in class. Should I find you secretly texting or worse actually having a phone conversation in class, you will instantly receive a lunch detention and/or ROM and I will take the phone away.*

* I’m supposed to bring your phone to the office to have your parent’s come and pick it up. If I’m feeling nice, I will give you the opportunity to “win” your phone back, but only if you sing a song for the class.

I get to choose the song.

Usually, it’s a Mariah Carey song.

If you don’t believe me, you can ask: George Eder, Danielle Adams, Kenny Valentine, Genna Ricciardi, etc. It’s not a good time. Trust me. Don’t let this be you.

4. Seats are assigned for the first few weeks orthe entire marking period depending on your behavior and work ethic as a class.

Don’t mess this up.

5. You are to treat these computers like new born babies. You will not write on them. You will not bang on them. You will not harm them in any

way. You will love them and have patience with them and take care of them. Without a computer, we work from the book.

6. Ipods and MP3 players are allowed, in fact-preferred. I just ask that you keep the volume at a level where I can’t hear what you’re rocking outto.

In this class, we go by the GRANDMA RULE.

-If you wouldn’t say it to your Grandma, you’re not going to say it here.

-If you wouldn’t behave a certain way in front of your Grandma, you’re not going to behave that way here.

And don’t even try and tell me your Grandma doesn’t care that you say or do awful things, because I know that she’s a sweet,

classy woman.

So, don’t embarrass her!

Poor Behavior, Language and Decision Making will result in:

1.A stern, verbal warning, possibly in front of the class, which is always embarrassing.

2.A Lunch Detention with yours truly, and a letter home.

3.A ROM, a letter home, and a very disappointed Grandma. (You should be ashamed!)

4.A damaged relationship between you and I. Far worse than any ROM or detention.
