Parish Information

We welcome you to the Good Shepherd Parish Community!

Please register at the Parish Office as soon as you are able to do so, and the staff will be happy to inform you about our parish and the opportunities we offer. Parish registration is required for reli-gious education, celebration of all Sacraments and certification as a sponsor for Baptism and Confirmation. Regular Sunday worship with us indicates a practicing Catholic, not just parish registration. Attendance is necessary at weekend worship for the all sacra-ments and certification of sponsorship. Please notify the parish office of any changes in phone numbers, addresses, e-mail ad-dresses or when leaving the parish.

We have hospitality Sunday, the first Sunday of the month. Please come and meet our Priest and fellow parishioners.

Baptism: All Baptisms are celebrated on the first Sunday of the month at 12noon. The preparation process should begin at least three months before the planned date of the Baptism. A Baptism Preparation Class is required for parents (godparents may attend if they wish). This class is offered on the fourth Sunday of each month at 9:45 AM. Please call the parish office to register. The date of the baptism is scheduled after attending the class. Parish membership and active worship is required for two months prior to preparation.

Religious Education: Provides faith filled instructions for Levels 1st through 8th. We have classes on two Saturdays a month from 8:45am to 11am. Special instructions are given for sacramental preparations.

Initiation of Adults and Older Children: This is an extended formation process for unbaptized or uncatechized adults or bap-tized Christians of other faith traditions who wish to become members of the Catholic Church, as well as for unbaptized or uncatechized school-aged children. Please contact the parish of-fice for more information. Initiation is celebrated at the Easter Vigil after a formation period of one or two years.

Adult Confirmation: This is a program for persons over the age of 18 who have received the Sacraments of Baptism and First Eucharist, but who never completed their initiation with the Sacra-ment of Confirmation. The program is a 10-12 week program, with Confirmation being celebrated on the Solemnity of Pente-cost. Please call the parish office for more details.

Matrimony: Couples wishing to marry in Good Shepherd Parish must be registered members of our parish. They are required to make initial arrangements at least one year in advance. Four ses-sions with the priest or deacon, as well as Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter take place during this year. Active worship for at least two months are required before a date may be scheduled.

Anointing of the Sick: Anyone who is seriously ill or unable to come to church for a length of time should contact the parish of-fice to arrange for the Anointing of the Sick. Eucharistic Ministers bring Holy Communion to homebound parishioners every Sun-day, and our priest will visit on the First Friday of each month. Please call the parish office to make arrangements. The Diocese of Metuchen provides Catholic priests to serve at all local hospi-tals.

Holy Orders: If you are interested in learning more about the priesthood or religious life, contact the Vocations Office of the Diocese of Metuchen at 732-562-1990, ext. 1700 or by email at [email protected] or visit www.diometuchen.org/vocations.

Fr. Krystian

My dear friends,

It is now the middle of May, and we are exactly two months from where this all start-ed. Some Dioceses are preparing a strategic plan to open to the “new normal”. I am sure you’ll be hearing that phrase a lot. We will follow our own Diocesan re-strictions as they are presented to us, prayerfully, very soon.

Since the beginning of the Good Shepherd, we have celebrated First Holy Com-munion on the weekend of May. Due to recent events, however, this has been post-poned until a later date. As we anticipate all churches reopening this spring, this gives us hope, and something to look forward too. Please keep our First Commun-ion Candidates in your prayers. Let us also pray for our new beginning, and especial-ly our Parish family affected by this virus in any way.

May the risen Lord bless each of you!

Please stay safe, healthy and be at peace.

With prayers,

Fr. Krystian For the month of May pray for those affected by Covid-19, and all hospital and nursing home personnel who are work-

ing so bravely and tirelessly , their families, our sick and homebound of our Parish family, especially:

fÑÜxtw|Çz à{x jÉÜw "For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that be God’s will, than for doing evil.” (1 Peter 3:17)

The old line says “if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.” Many of us are diligent in our planning and mak-ing sure things are progressing smoothly. Then disaster strikes, we don’t get the result that was intended or an unforeseen problem arises. Many times we may respond negatively and ask, “Why me? I did everything right!” Here’s the thing – adversity humbles us and reminds us of our dependence on God and not on our own self-reliance. Rest assured, God has a better plan in store for you.

The Power of the Spirit

Do you recognize the sacrament that is celebrated in Today’s first reading from the Acts of the Apostles? When Peter and John imposed hands on those who had been baptized, they received the Holy Spirit in the sacrament of confirmation. The reading from the First Letter of Peter and the passage from John’s Gospel both consider the results of our baptism and confirmation. Peter remind us it is likely that we will have to suffer for what we believe.

In today’s Gospel Jesus speaks clearly about the Holy Spirit, referring to a “Paraclete,” one who will stand with us to de-fend us. Poignantly, Jesus promises his disciples, and all of us, “I will not leave you orphans.” He has never left his fol-lowers orphaned. We have always had the Holy Spirit to guide us.

Pope Francis’ Secrets for Happiness:

Respect Other’s Beliefs

We all have family members, friends, and acquaintances who do not share our Catholic beliefs. Yet, nagging and pressuring will not bring happiness for anyone. “We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communi-cating,” Pope Francis explains. When we live as authen-tic witnesses to Christ, other people are attracted by the inner peace and joy for themselves. Whether or not they ever come to share our beliefs, when we treat them with respect, we create a bond of happiness between us.

How do you respect other’s beliefs and at the same time witness to your own?

Reflecting on God’s Word

The head nurse had called Mary Beth in desperation. “The patient in 207 can’t talk because of her throat can-cer surgery. She is so agitated by her daughters that I’m concerned about her recovery. They fight over every-thing from what treatment she should receive to where she should go when we release her from the hospital. Help!” Mary Beth had done pastoral care in the hospital long enough to have gotten a reputation with the nursing staff for her healing presences. She was only in the room ten minutes before the patient was calm and smil-ing, and the sisters had agreed to sit down with a social worker to discuss their options.

In today’s first reading we see the Holy Spirit at work in Philp, Peter and John. They are living proof that Jesus’ healing presences lives in them. With words, prayer, and touch they communicate the Spirit that unites the crowds, heals the sick, and brings the Samaritans to life in the Spirit. Looking back at previous Easter readings from the Acts of the Apostles, we can see that now all the believers in the ancient world are united in the Spir-it—Jews in Jerusalem, Hellenist Greek-speaking Jews, Gentiles, and now Samaritans. They are cured of their divisions and united in harmony through the healing presence of the Holy Spirit. Alleluia!

-Virginia Stillwell

Living God's Word You truly wanted to live in the Spirit what would you do differently? Would you pray more?

Witness more? Love More? What will it cost you to “sanctify Christ as Lord in your heart”?
