OUR MISSION STATEMENT Good Shepherd is a Christian, caring community, nourished by a joyful spirit-filled liturgy that inspires our daily lives. We strive
to welcome, accept and love all people as they are, and through our ministries reach out with active concern to those in need.
Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time —August 9, 2009
Welcome To
GOOD SHEPHERD Catholic Church
Menomonee Falls, WI
[What do your Saturdays look like?]
While I was living in Japan, I had the good opportunity of teaching
English to a pretty smart neurosurgeon. As skilled as he was, there was
something he wrote on the whiteboard in his office [a reminder for him and
his staff] that caught my attention: ―Medicine requires lifelong learning.‖
It‘s the same with our faith, don‘t you think? Whatever we learned in
school, at home or in church, there‘s always more to explore, more to ap-
preciate and more to challenge us to grow closer to God.
Here at Good Shepherd, we have a delightful and longstanding tradition of participating in
programs that nurture and encourage adult faith formation. …and there are many opportunities to
do that - here in the parish and beyond. Today, I‘d like to highlight the ―and beyond.‖ See if one or
the other might be calling out to you!
What‘s ‗out there‘?
We‘ve had a number among us who have studied in the past in the Certificate Program at
St. Francis Seminary - an experience that has brought them and us many blessings! With changes
in the archdiocese and the seminary no longer offering this program, Cardinal Stritch University has
stepped up to the plate and created a couple of very fine programs in adult faith formation:
1) The Pentecost Mission, a basic adult religious education program - 8 sessions offered on
Saturday mornings in fall. It covers 8 basic areas of our faith.
2) The Certificate in Lay Ministries – a more intense two-year program offered on Saturdays.
This program is quite similar in scope and content to the seminary‘s certificate program – a kind of
immersion into our faith tradition.
We are fortunate to have the tuition for both of these programs covered by a grant from the
Eschweiler New Century Fund.
One other program, from which a number of us have graduated, is the Spiritual Mentoring
Program, offered through Casa Romero Renewal Center. It also takes place on Saturday. It offers
formation in spirituality and the art of Christian companionship. It is subsidized in part by the
Eschweiler New Century Fund.
What are the expectations?
When I talk to folks to invite them to consider any of these programs, I
am sometimes asked if the parish expects something in return. Simple put,
―No.‖ We believe that the experience in itself is valuable for those who partici-
pate and for us all.
If you are interested or have questions, give me a call.

GAY and STRAIGHT in CHRIST
Flag your evening of Thursday,

supper and viewing of an informa-
tive and emotional family movie
titled ―Anyone and Everyone‖
What is all this talk about Immi-
gration?
You are welcome to join a group of peo-
ple (Immigration Study Group) who em-
brace justice for all to study and learn
about some of the myths regarding Im-
migrants and Immigration. The next
gathering is August 13th @7pm in the
Christian Formation Room. For more
information, call Barb Messerknecht at
262 – 255 2062.
Opportunities to Grow in Faith Together! Here are two excellent programs being offered by Cardinal Stritch Univer-
sity‘s St. Clare Center for Ministry Formation. Interested parishioners will be
subsidized by our Eschweiler New Century Fund for these programs:
1. Pentecost Mission – a basic adult religious education series –
offered 8 Saturday mornings in Fall (8:30 to 11:45 a.m.) .
2. Certificate in Lay Ministries – a more intense two-year program
offered on Saturdays (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) This program is grounded in the
four formation elements outlined in the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bish-
ops‘ document, ―Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord,‖ – intellectual,
spiritual, human and pastoral formation. Both programs start August 29,
2009. For more information call Jane Clare in the parish office.
Preschool Education at an Affordable Price In today‘s economic state, where can you go for a quality, fully accred-
ited preschool at an affordable price? Very close to
home at the Menomonee Falls Preschool Co-op, lo-
cated in Good Shepherd Church. Menomonee Falls
Preschool Co-op is a fully accredited, non-sectarian
and nondiscriminatory preschool that offers quality
preschool education for as little as $3.20 per hour.
The preschool was established in 1964 and is one of
the oldest, most well-respected preschools in the area. Licensed by
the State of Wisconsin, the preschool focuses on enriching and en-
hancing the growth and development of your child‘s physical, emo-
tional, social and intellectual skills. All of our teachers are certified in
Early Childhood Education and have many years of experience. With
limited class sizes, spacious classrooms, and wonderful teachers we
know your child will love their first school experience.
The Menomonee Falls Preschool Co-op is one of the most competi-
tively priced preschools in the area with 3K classes from as little as
$725 per year and 4K classes from as little as $900 per year. As a co

sign/symbol of God’s presence.

Many hands, light work? Come, help us paint around the building! Some people serve on parish commissions and committees that carry out the func-
tions of a parish on a year in and year out basis. Other people prefer short term in-
volvements—a commitment of time and energy that is over in a definable amount of
time. If you are this second kind of a person here is an opportunity for you----
There are a few areas of the parish building that could use some freshening-up
through a fresh coat of paint. A parishioner is donating the paint; now we need the
hands to put it on the wall. You‘ve painted at home or maybe even as a professional;
we‘re trying to get a group together –as the old German saying goes ―many hands
make light work‖.
One ambitious project is to paint Daniels Hall, so we need your willing hands.
Please call the parish office this week!!! Thanks!
