The Topkapi Palace was the Ottoman sultans’ official residence in the city between 1465 and 1853. The palace, which was once a setting for state occasions and royal entertainment, now is a major tourist attraction. After the end of the Otto-man Empire in 1921, the Top-kapi Palace was transformed by government de-cree into a mu-seum of the im-perial era. It is filled with examples of Ottoman architecture and con-tains large collections of porcelain, robes, weapons, shields, armour, Ottoman miniatures, Islamic calli-graphic manuscripts and murals, as well as a display of Ottoman treasure and jewellery.
The Grand Bazaar is one of the largest covered markets in the world, comprising more than 58 streets and 4,000 shops, and welcoming between 250,000 and 400,000
visi-tors daily. Well known for its jewel-lery, pottery, spice and car-pet shops, the bazaar contains two “bedestens” (domed mason-
ry structures built for storage and safekeeping), the first of which was constructed between 1455 and 1461 by the order of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. The bazaar was vastly enlarged in the 16th century, during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, and in 1894 underwent a major restoration following an earthquake.

The Eyüp neighbourhood, an Ottoman district, is located on the Golden Horn outside the old city walls. A his-toric area, Eyüp boasts many traditional Islamic sights including the famous Eyüp Sultan Mosque. Many tourists also venture up the hill adjacent to the mosque to enjoy the splen-did scenery and natural beauty of Pierre Loti, which can also be reached by taking a gondola ride (cable car). Named after the French naval officer and famous novelist who came to Istanbul in 1876, and also known as “Lovers Hill” by locals, Pierre Loti offers a panoramic view of the Golden Horn. The famous café perched on the top of the hill is a wonderful spot to enjoy a Turkish coffee or tea.
The Rahmi M. Koç Museum, located on the northern shore of Golden Horn, extends across three separate areas spanning around 27,000 square metres, including the his-
toric Lengerhane building and the Hasköy dockyard. The museum com-prises an open air display area, where visitors can see large-scale and durable objects
such as a submarine, a ferry boat, planes and a floating sheerlegs. The privately owned museum also hosts the Atatürk Collection, which includes personal belongings, from costumes to official equipment, of the founder and first president of the Republic of Turkey.

Built around the 17th century, Kemeralti’s original market streets were covered with arches. Today, modern business centres, stores, movie theatres and cafeterias are found there, along with traditional Turkish handicrafts, ceramic ware, wooden objects, clothing, leather and kilim rugs, not to mention food and fish for the locals’ daily shopping. Konak Pier, designed by the famous Gustave Eiffel in the 1870s, has served as French and Turkish customs office, fish market and parking lot. The original steel construc-tion was renovated with the latest technology and made its debut as a shopping mall in 1998. It features a cinema, fashion stores with famous brands, waterside cafés and restaurants.
Built in 135 AD to store 12,000 scrolls and to serve as a mausoleum for Roman Senator Tiberius Julius Celsus
Polemaeanus, the library lay in ruins for centuries until its façade was re-erected in the 1970s. Exemplifying the Greek influence on Roman architecture, it was depicted on the reverse of the 20 million Turkish lira banknote.
