Make the most of your stay

Our work in Eskdale

If you’re up for more camping or glamping, we also have sites at Wasdale, Great Langdale, Hoathwaite on the shore of Coniston and Low Wray on the shore of Windermere and lots more around the whole of the UK.

Or, you might like our holiday cottages in this area all of which are ideal for climbing and walking breaks. Bird How just up the valley from the campsite, sleeps 4, is a step up from camping in an idyllic spot on the fellside. More details on our website.

Welcome to Eskdale Campsite

When you’re out and about, you might see our Rangers hard at work in the valley or up on the fells.

Look out for them in their red fleeces – they may be repairing hedges, dry stone walls or eroded paths, managing trees and supporting local farmers and conserving the health and habitats of wildlife and the natural environment.

This year, they’re busy with the Whillan Beck Hydro-power project not far from the campsite. Across the Lakes, we’re aiming to generate more clean energy and use less fossil fuels and this scheme, ready in 2020, is expected to provide power to around 150 homes and reduce our carbon emissions by over 200 tonnes.

Working holidays

If you fancy spending a few days working alongside our Rangers, learning new skills and making new friends as well as looking after the spectacular landscape in this area, we run an annual programme of working holidays. Find out more at:

There’s so much more to discover in the Lakes and beyond. By becoming a member, you’ll be helping us to look after these special places forever, for every one for as little as £6 per month for an individual or £10.50 per month for a family.

Ask the team at reception for further information or to sign you up – there are lots of benefits including free entry to local properties such as Allan Bank and Wray Castle as well as free parking in all our pay and display car parks.

We hope you have a great holiday staying at this National Trust campsite.Get active…Eskdale valley is the perfect base for walkers – you can tick off some of Lakeland’s highest summits from here, including Scafell but there are many shorter, easier walks too starting from the campsite. You could follow the river along past St Catherine’s Church where you can cross some stepping stones, or carry on up to Stanley Ghyll Force, a 60 foot high waterfall in a deep gorge. If you’ve brought your bike, there are some lovely rides towards the coast or you can go to the opposite extreme and tackle England’s steepest passes, Hard Knot and Wrynose – definitely not for the faint-hearted. You can hire bikes or book guided adventure activities at West Lakes Adventure nearby.

Take a steam train rideThe Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway (La’al Ratty, as it’s known locally), is a popular tourist attraction boasting the oldest working 15” gauge locomotive in the world and the station is just a few minutes walk away. You can combine walks and bike rides with a steam ride and there are lots of special events throughout the year.

Visit an ancient millNearby, Eskdale Mill is well worth a visit with its newly restored waterwheels, machinery and brand new interactive exhibition – it’s suitable for all ages and abilities, including well-behaved dogs.

Relax and refuelThere are three lovely Lakeland pubs all within easy walking distance of the campsite. Pop over to the Woolpack Inn for a herdwick mutton burger, Boot Inn for hearty pub grub or Brook house Inn for comforting Lakeland fayre. The valley pubs also host an annual beer festival in June.

Next time you stay…

www.nationaltrust.org.uk/holidays

We’re Europe’s largest conservation charity and believe in the importance of nature, beauty and history in people’s lives. We care for over 20 per cent of the Lake District National Park, including England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike; its deepest lake, Wastwater; its precious wildlife; 90 tenanted farms, and the cultural heritage within a dozen historic buildings.

We support 300 jobs in Cumbria and the Lake District, and each year we work with local volunteers, who help us look after one of England’s most inspirational landscapes. The Trust is dependent on the support of its members and the visitors we welcome to our special places each year: every penny we raise in Cumbria is invested in caring for this special place, for ever, for everyone.
