Welcome to Durack School
2018 Welcome to the new 2018 school year! We’ve had a great start to the year with everyone settling into their new classes and routines very quickly. This year we have welcomed 7 new teachers to our school and we have increased our classes by an extra 3, compared to last year. Please check out our new teachers in this newsletter and learn a little bit more about them. Our first assembly of the year will be tomorrow, Friday 9
th February, with our fantastic Ms
Edie’s Year 5/6 class providing the entertainment. We will also hear from our nominated School Captains and Vice-Captains who will be giving their campaign speeches to the whole school community. After the assembly all classes will vote for these key student leader positions in our school. Assemblies start at 8.30am and we would love to see as many parents there as possible. Next week we are holding a Meet the Teacher Evening where classrooms will be open for parents to visit. This is a great opportunity for your child to show you their classroom and for you to meet their teacher in an informal setting. I encourage all parents to attend and begin building the partnership with their child’s teacher, which is so vital in achieving excellent outcomes for our students. Please note, individual conversations about students cannot happen on this evening. We have allocated 2 nights and different times in the hope that parents with more than one child at school, can attend all classes. Last year’s feedback was that it was tricky to visit 3 or 4 rooms in the hour we had allocated.

Dignity and Determination
Although the rain has been beautiful, it’s also a timely reminder to discuss water safety around drains and roads with our children. I encourage everyone to view the water safety message in this week’s newsletter, about playing in Pipes and Drains, and discuss it with your child/ren. We have also included information on being Croc Wise, due to the reported sightings of crocodiles in the lakes around Durack. In the event of heavy rain and thunder storms whilst at school, students will stay in their classrooms during recess and lunch play. They do have a break, however, we ensure that they are playing safely inside during these break times. Likewise if lightning is present at home time, students will be kept in their classrooms until this passes or parents collect them. With heavy rain after school, students will be encouraged to wait until the rain subsides or parents come to collect them. Students will be able to go home in the rain, if there is no lightning or high winds present. A hint to parents is to either ensure students have a rain coat or umbrella that fits over their school bag or have a large garbage bag in their children’s school bag to use as either a poncho or to cover the school bag. Please note that students need to wear covered shoes home due to the risk of Melioidosis (see information in this newsletter). At this time of year it’s a good idea to have 2 sets of shoes, as these will often get wet. The playground is supervised from 7:50am to 2.50pm daily. Gates to the school will be unlocked at 7.30am and will remain closed throughout the school day. Students are not to be left at school before 7:50am as this is unsafe. The school does not have duty of care for students until 7:50am. If you need to drop off your child/ren before this time, you must enrol them into the Before School Care Program with YMCA. Likewise in the afternoon, supervision is only available until 2.50pm. All students need to have been picked up or left the school grounds before this time. If you require care after this time, you must enrol them in the After School Care with YMCA. The YMCA provides a before school care and after school care program. The hours of operation are: Before school care: 6:00am – 8:00am After school care: 2:30pm to 6:00pm For more information please phone 0439 991 095 or visit https://ymcatopend.org.au/locations/durak-primary-school Have a great fortnight. I hope to see you at assembly. Jo Jefferson Principal

JULIE GEISEL
The Northern Territory’s Top End has an average monthly rainfall of 240mm in the Wet Season, causing our rivers and waterways to become fast-flowing torrents.
In urban areas, pipes and drains transport the overflow of water through our streets, causing an inviting but potentially deadly watercourse.
The NT Government’s Stay out of Pipes and Drains advertising campaign is a stark reminder of just how life-threatening those urban torrents can be. The campaign will run for the duration of the Wet Season in partnership with the Royal Life Saving Society of the NT.
So this Wet Season #staysafeintheWET and stay out of pipes and drains.
Crocwise key messages are:
1. Crocs are common
2. Crocs move around
3. Crocs are deadly
4. Read and obey all signs
